Kael's plan was simple.
Annoy the wyrm. Make it chase them. Lead it away from the shelters into the industrial district where the buildings were thicker and the civilian population was zero.
It was simple and kinda stupid.
But it worked for four minutes.
The wyrm chased them through collapsed streets and shattered corridors, blind but relentless, dark fire carving furrows of destruction through everything in its path. Kael used gravity to redirect falling debris into its face. Aria used shadow nets to trip its coils. They stayed ahead — barely — by exploiting every narrow passage and collapsed structure the city offered.
Then the wyrm learned.
It stopped chasing.
Instead, it coiled in the center of an intersection and waited. Its blind head turned slowly, dark fire pooling in its jaws, body tensing like a spring.
Kael skidded to a halt thirty meters away.
"Well, It's not stupid," he breathed.
The wyrm's head snapped toward them.
Dark fire erupted.
A wave of black flame thirty meters wide that consumed everything in its path. No dodging. No narrow passage to hide behind. Just raw destruction rolling toward them like a tidal wave.
Kael grabbed Aria and threw them both to the ground.
Gravity wall. Maximum output.
The barrier formed above them — thin, desperate, burning through his remaining two percent mana like kindling. The dark fire slammed into it and ate it. Mana-based defenses meant nothing against flames that consumed mana itself.
The wall shattered.
The fire washed over them.
Pain.
A slow, grinding agony that started in Kael's skin and worked its way inward. The dark fire didn't burn flesh — it burned power. Every scrap of mana in his body, every wisp of energy in his meridians, every hint of cultivation base he'd spent fourteen years building.
Gone.
His mana dropped from two percent to zero.
His Enhanced Mana Sight winked out.
His Gravity Step failed.
His connection to his own power simply stopped, like someone had pulled a plug.
Beside him, Aria screamed.
Her shadow manipulation collapsed. The tendrils she'd been maintaining dissolved into smoke. Her Novice II power flickered and died, dark fire consuming the energy that sustained it.
The wave passed.
Kael lay on scorched asphalt, staring at a sky choked with ash and smoke.
He couldn't feel his cultivation.
Fourteen years of work. Fourteen years of suffering. Gone in a single breath of black fire.
Mana depletion complete, the System reported. All active abilities offline. Estimated recovery time: three to five days with rest. Without rest: one to two weeks.
"One to two weeks," Kael croaked. "Fantastic."
The wyrm coiled closer.
It couldn't see. But it could smell — the residual energy of two cultivators who'd just been stripped of everything. Prey. Weak. Helpless.
Its jaws opened.
Kael could feel the heat building in its throat. Another blast. Point blank this time. No survival.
He looked at Aria.
She was trying to stand. Her legs wouldn't cooperate. Dark fire had scorched her arms and face, and her eyes were glassy with shock.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
She grabbed his wrist.
"Not yet."
The wyrm's jaws opened wider.
Dark fire gathered.
And then the sky cracked.
The sound came first — a high-pitched whine like reality itself was being torn. Then the cold. A wave of absolute frigid air that rolled through the destroyed intersection and froze the dark fire in the wyrm's throat solid.
The beast choked.
Its jaws snapped shut, crystallized flames shattering like black glass.
Kael looked up.
A figure descended from the sky.
She was small — shorter than Kael expected, maybe five foot four, wrapped in a military uniform that crackled with ice crystals. Her hair was black, pulled back in a severe knot. Her eyes were pale blue, and they burned with a cold that made the freezing air feel warm by comparison.
She landed on the wyrm's head.
The impact created a crater.
The wyrm's skull cracked.
[SPIRIT SOUL CULTIVATOR DETECTED]
[Name: Commander Yuki Tanaka]
[Realm: Spirit Soul (Rank 5)]
[Power: Ice Manipulation + Thermal Vision]
[Threat Assessment: Lethal to current targets]
She's here, Kael thought dazedly. Finally.
Yuki Tanaka didn't look at them.
She looked at the wyrm.
"You've been busy," she said quietly.
The wyrm shrieked and bucked, trying to throw her off. Its coils thrashed, tail sweeping through buildings, dark fire sputtering from its damaged throat.
Yuki didn't move.
Ice formed beneath her feet — spreading from her soles across the wyrm's skull, creeping into the cracks she'd created, expanding. Not just ice. Mana-infused ice. Ice that carried the weight of a Spirit Soul cultivator's will behind it.
The wyrm's head stopped moving.
Not because it chose to. Because it couldn't. The ice had spread through its skull and into its neck, locking muscles and joints in crystalline paralysis.
"I hate dungeon beasts," Yuki said.
She raised her hand.
The temperature dropped another thirty degrees.
Frost formed on every surface within fifty meters. The asphalt cracked. The rubble groaned. The air itself seemed to freeze, ice crystals forming in midair like suspended stars.
Yuki closed her fist.
The ice contracted.
The wyrm's skull imploded.
It was crushed inward by thousands of tons of compressed ice, scales and bone and dungeon energy collapsing into a sphere of frozen wreckage no larger than a basketball.
The body followed.
Ice spread from the crushed skull down the spine, through the ribs, along the tail. Every scale. Every joint. Every organ. Frozen. Compressed. Destroyed.
Thirty meters of Abyssal Wyrm reduced to a frozen corpse in four seconds.
Kael watched with eyes that couldn't close.
That was Spirit Soul.
Ended the fight before it could begin.
Four seconds was all it took.
That was the gap between him and her.
Four seconds and two full realms.
"You're the Vorn boy," Yuki said, stepping off the frozen corpse. Her boots crunched against ice. "Kael."
"Yes, Commander."
"You stole a dungeon core from an active rift, partially collapsed said rift, blinded an Abyssal Wyrm, and led it on a chase through my city." Her pale eyes met his. "Explain."
Kael opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
He was empty. Shocked that she analysed everything in just a few moments of her arrival. His mana was gone, his hand was broken, his body was burned, and he was lying on scorched asphalt staring up at a woman who could kill him by blinking.
"The core," he managed. "I secured the core. The rift is contracting. The shelters are intact."
"Answer my question."
"I survived."
Yuki stared at him.
Something flickered in her expression — not approval, exactly. More like... recognition.
"Survival isn't a strategy," she said.
"It's the only one I had."
Silence.
Then Yuki turned away.
"Medical teams are en route. Don't move." She paused. "The core. Hand it over."
Kael looked at the gravity-wrapped crystal still clutched against his chest. The gravity shell was fading — he had no mana to sustain it.
He released it.
The core floated to Yuki's outstretched hand.
She examined it for a moment, then tucked it into a containment unit on her belt.
"This will be catalogued and credited to the Hunter Association. Your family will receive notification."
"My family doesn't care about credit."
"Then I'm sure they'll care about the political leverage this represents." She glanced back at him. "A fourteen-year-old Mana Gathering cultivator helped contain a Rank B dungeon incursion with a Spirit Soul beast. That's a lot for a Vorn since most Vorns are selfish and only care about their skin."
She walked away.
The medical teams arrived thirty seconds later.
Kael let the darkness take him.
