THE LIM BIBLE

LAWS OF AN IMPOSSIBLE WORLD

Complete World Bible & Opening

"Magic is not divine. It is not sacred. It is not a gift from God or proof of superior blood.

It is energy. And energy, by the first law of thermodynamics, cannot be created or destroyed.

It can only be transferred.

To me."

— Jonas Aldric von Stein, formerly Dr. Elias Cord, 2247 A.D.

PART ONE — THE WORLD

I. OVERVIEW — THE MIRROR EARTH

This world is Earth. Or rather, it is what Earth would have become if, somewhere in the deep past, a fraction of humanity had been born with the ability to perceive and manipulate a naturally occurring energy field woven into the fabric of all living matter.

The geography is identical. The same continents. The same rivers. The same mountain ranges and coastlines. Even the civilizations developed along familiar lines — the same peoples, in the same regions, building the same cultural identities — but the presence of magic fundamentally altered every power structure, every military doctrine, and every political hierarchy the world ever produced.

There was no Industrial Revolution. There was no need for one. Why engineer a steam engine when a fire-mage can heat a forge indefinitely? Why build supply chains when earth-mages can raise walls overnight and water-mages can irrigate a desert? Progress happened — but only in the directions magic could not cover. Cold weapons reached extraordinary refinements. Architecture became monumental. Mathematics and astronomy flourished. But chemistry, physics, and the mechanical sciences stagnated, fed just enough scraps to remain functional without ever threatening the mage class's monopoly on power.

The world in the current era is roughly equivalent to Earth's 14th-15th century in technology and social structure — but with the military capacity of something significantly more dangerous.

II. MAGIC — THE FLUX

What It Is

The naturally occurring energy field is called the Flux by scholars, Geistkraft (Spirit-Force) by Germanic peoples, Qi in Han territories, Ase in Yoruba and Oyo traditions, Ka in Egypt, and dozens of other names across the world. All of these names describe the same phenomenon. Nobody in this world knows that yet.

Who Has It

Approximately one in every one thousand to two thousand people is born with the ability to perceive and manipulate the Flux. There is no reliable genetic pattern. It appears in noble bloodlines and farming families alike — though noble families, having the resources to identify and train magical children early, maintain a disproportionate concentration of trained mages.

A child's magical potential is typically identified between the ages of five and eight, when Flux sensitivity first manifests as involuntary phenomena — candles flickering without wind, objects moving, unexplained temperature changes. Unidentified or untrained mages are dangerous to themselves and those around them.

Ability Classifications

Common Abilities (appear in roughly 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,500 births)

| Ability | Description | Military Value |

|---|---|---|

| Fire | Generation and manipulation of flame and heat | Extremely high |

| Water | Manipulation of water in all states, including ice | High |

| Lightning | Generation and direction of electrical discharge | Extremely high |

| Earth | Manipulation of stone, soil, and mineral matter | High (offense & fortification) |

| Wind | Manipulation of air pressure and atmospheric movement | High (mobility & ranged) |

Rare Abilities (appear in roughly 1 in 1,500 to 1 in 2,000 births, sometimes fewer)

| Ability | Description | Notes |

|---|---|---|

| Flight | Self-propelled aerial movement via Flux | Tactically decisive; rare enough to be legendary |

| Healing | Acceleration of biological repair processes | Politically invaluable; healers are never soldiers |

| Telepathy | Reading and surface-projection of thought | Heavily regulated; feared universally |

| Telekinesis | Movement of physical objects via Flux | Variable range; considered a noble gift |

| Precognition | Limited perception of probable futures | Unreliable, fragmentary; treated as sacred |

| Nature | Communion and manipulation of living plant matter | Rare; associated with rural and tribal traditions |

Limitations

Magic requires Flux reserves which deplete with use and regenerate with rest. Overextension causes physical collapse and, in extreme cases, death.

Mages cannot learn abilities they were not born with. A fire-mage will never manipulate water.

Magic cannot create matter from nothing. It can only manipulate what already exists.

Crucially — and unknown to anyone in this world — magical energy obeys thermodynamic laws. It can be redirected, absorbed, and re-emitted. It does not vanish when it meets resistance. It transfers.

The Anomaly (Elias's Ability) — Post-Transit Acquisition

Jonas von Stein was assessed at age six as magically inert — no Flux sensitivity, no manifestation. That assessment was entirely accurate. Jonas had no ability. He was, by every measure this world possessed, Unfluxed.

Then the dark matter transit happened.

When Elias Cord's consciousness crossed the dimensional boundary and fused with Jonas's body, the event did not arrive cleanly. Dark matter interaction fields operate at a more fundamental level than biological matter — the transit did not merely deposit one mind into one body. It restructured the body at the energetic level. The collision between a destabilized dark matter field and a living human vessel produced something that had no precedent in either world.

Entropic Absorption — the capacity to draw in ambient and directed energy of any type. Thermal. Kinetic. Electrical. Magnetic. And most critically: Flux.

Jonas's body now functions as a receiver. A sink. Energy directed at him — including magical spells — does not deflect or resist. It simply enters, is stored in what Elias identifies as a restructured cavity in the chest that behaves analogously to a biological capacitor, and can be released in controlled or uncontrolled bursts. The storage capacity grows over time. The precision of release improves with practice.

From the outside, when a mage casts at Jonas, it looks as though the spell simply failed. Misfired. Dissolved into nothing. From Elias's perspective, it looks like charging a battery.

The ability did not exist before the transit. It is not a magical gift, not a divine blessing, not a rare Flux variant. It is the physical scar left on a human body by an event that should have been impossible — a wound that became a weapon.

Elias has three working hypotheses about it. The first two are wrong. The third — that the transit fused dark matter resonance properties directly into Jonas's cellular structure, creating a permanent energy interface between the body and the ambient field — is correct. He will reach this conclusion eventually.

Nobody else in this world has the conceptual framework to even ask the right questions about what he is.

Nobody knows this yet. Nobody should, for a long time.

III. SOCIETY & POLITICS

The Rule of the Mage Class

Magic is power. Not metaphorically — literally. A single fire-mage can kill dozens of soldiers before they close the distance. A lightning-mage can destroy a fortified position. An earth-mage can bring down a castle wall in hours.

The result is a world where magical ability is the primary qualification for political and military authority. Every major nation on earth is governed by mage-nobles, mage-emperors, or mage-councils. Non-mages — called the Unfluxed, the Inert, the Common, or the Unmarked depending on region — hold no political power regardless of birth, wealth, or intelligence.

This is not a law in most places. It does not need to be. It is simply the shape of how power distributes when one class of person can kill the other class without weapons.

The one exception is inherited noble titles, where a mage-noble parent may pass a title to a non-mage child by default — but such rulers are considered weak and are typically dominated by their mage advisors.

Religion

Religion across this world is fragmented, localized, and ancestor-focused. There is no single dominant faith with continental authority.

The most widespread spiritual tradition is Ancestral Veneration — the belief that the spirits of powerful ancestors continue to influence the living world, and that maintaining proper rites, offerings, and remembrance keeps those spirits active and protective. A great-grandfather who was a powerful fire-mage is prayed to for protection. A healer ancestor is invoked in times of illness.

This creates a world where the more powerful your ancestors were, the closer to divine your bloodline becomes. Old mage-noble families cultivate their ancestral shrines with the same intensity they cultivate their political alliances. Claiming descent from a historically powerful mage is both religious and political capital.

Organized religion exists in pockets — the Eternal Flame Church in parts of Europe teaches that magic is a divine gift and its practice is sacred duty — but it competes with local ancestor traditions and has never achieved the continental dominance the Catholic Church held on Earth.

Weapons

There are two categories of weapon in this world: Magical and Cold.

Magical weapons are implements enchanted or constructed to channel Flux — mage-staves, runed blades that amplify the wielder's ability, sealed canisters containing compressed spell-constructs usable by non-mages in limited ways. They are expensive, rare, and the exclusive province of the mage class.

Cold weapons are conventional arms refined to remarkable degrees in the absence of gunpowder technology: steel longswords, composite bows, crossbows of extraordinary precision, siege engines, polearms of dozens of regional varieties. Master bladesmiths and engineers are among the most respected non-mages in existence, because cold weapons are the only military tool available to the Unfluxed.

Gunpowder does not exist in this world. The branch of chemistry that would have produced it was never developed. This is, Elias Cord will eventually note, the single largest military blindspot in the entire world.

PART TWO — THE MAJOR POWERS

EUROPE

The German Empire (Central and Eastern Europa)

The dominant land power of the European continent. The Empire is governed by the Kaiser, who is always a mage — tradition demands it, and the Imperial Succession Council, composed of the eight most powerful mage-noble houses, enforces it ruthlessly. The German Empire is an earth-and-fire power militarily, known for its fortress cities, its heavily armored infantry supplemented by earth-mage fortification teams, and its aggressive expansion eastward.

Bavaria — where Jonas von Stein lives — is a minor territory within the German Empire's western fringe. The von Stein barony is small, politically irrelevant, and precisely the kind of place a dangerous man could grow up unnoticed.

The Britannia Empire (Northwestern Islands and Atlantic Coast Holdings)

An island nation turned maritime empire. Britannia's dominance is built on wind and water mages — its fleet is unrivalled, and its ability to project power across sea lanes has made it the most geographically widespread empire on earth despite a relatively small home territory. Britanian policy is commercial and colonial. They trade. They extract. They station mage-officers at every chokepoint of value and call it civilization.

The French Kingdom (Western Europa)

The most culturally refined of the European powers and the most politically volatile. France operates as a constitutional monarchy in theory; in practice it is a constant three-way negotiation between the Crown, the Noble Mage Houses, and the Church of the Eternal Flame, which is strongest in French territory. French lightning-mages are considered among the finest battlefield casters on the continent.

The Roman Republic (Mediterranean Basin)

Not an empire — Rome, in this world, underwent a different political evolution and currently exists as an oligarchic republic governed by a Senate in which seats are allocated by a combination of wealth, lineage, and magical assessment. Rome controls the Mediterranean trade and has the finest healers and telepaths in the western world. Roman telepaths serving as judges, diplomats, and interrogators are known and feared across Europa.

ASIA

The Han Dynasty (China and surrounding territories)

The oldest continuous civilization on earth and the most populated. The Han Dynasty governs through a Mandate of Heaven doctrine reinterpreted as: the Emperor rules because he holds the most powerful magical bloodline in the realm, and his mandate persists as long as his power remains supreme. Challenges to this are treated as cosmic disorder rather than merely political rebellion.

Han mages favor earth and nature abilities, and Han military doctrine is based on overwhelming scale — the sheer number of mages the Dynasty can field dwarfs any other single nation. Han scholarship on magical theory is the most advanced in the world, though even they have never asked the question Elias is already formulating.

The Sun Empire (Japan)

A military aristocracy of extraordinary internal discipline. The Sun Empire is governed by the Divine Emperor in name and by the Shogun and his mage-council in practice. Sun Empire military doctrine is based on precision and individual excellence rather than scale — the ideal Sun soldier is a warrior-mage trained from childhood in both cold-weapon combat and Flux manipulation. Sun lightning-mages are regarded as the most technically skilled in the world.

The Sun Empire and the Han Dynasty have been in a state of carefully managed tension for three centuries.

Joseon (Korean Peninsula)

A kingdom of extraordinary cultural and scholarly achievement. Joseon is smaller than its neighbors and maintains its independence through diplomatic precision and the quality of its mage-academics — Joseon produces the finest magical theorists in Asia, and their services are sought by every major power. Joseon's continued existence is essentially a testament to making yourself too useful to conquer.

ASIA — SOUTH & WEST (Referenced, not detailed here)

The Mughal territories, the Persian realms, the Ottoman domains — all major powers in their own right, each with distinct magical traditions and political structures. Available for development in later arcs.

THE AMERICAS

The Aztec Empire (Central America)

The dominant power of the central continent, built on fire and earth magic and the sacrificial tradition which has, in this world, a distinctly magical dimension — certain ritual sacrifices genuinely generate Flux surges that can be weaponized or directed into imperial projects. The Aztec magical-military complex is among the most formidable in the world. Their fire-mages are the most numerous of any nation per capita.

The Inca Empire (Western South America)

A highly organized, state-controlled civilization with advanced earth and nature magic traditions. Inca earth-mages built road and terrace systems that still function flawlessly centuries after construction. The Inca approach to magic is fundamentally infrastructural — less about warfare, more about engineering the environment to support a vast population.

The Mohican Confederation & The Nations of the Plains (Northern Americas)

Collectively called Injuns by outsiders (a term they do not use themselves). The northern continental peoples operate as a collection of confederated nations rather than centralized empires. Their magical tradition is deeply tied to nature and wind abilities, and their mages operate not as a separate ruling class but as sacred stewards embedded within their communities. This makes their societies uniquely egalitarian by world standards — a distinction Elias will eventually find fascinating.

AFRICA

Egypt (Northeastern Africa)

Ancient beyond all others. Egypt has been governed by mage-pharaohs for longer than any other nation's recorded history, and its ancestral magical tradition is the oldest formal system of Flux study in the world. Egyptian magical scholarship predates Han by centuries. Their healing and precognition traditions are unmatched. Egypt is a civilization that has seen empires rise and fall around it and considers the current era merely another cycle.

The Oyo Empire (Western Africa)

The military and commercial colossus of sub-Saharan Africa. Oyo is a cavalry empire — its famous mounted warriors supplemented by wind and lightning mages make it the dominant land power in its region. Oyo's political structure is sophisticated: the Alaafin (king) governs in concert with a council of mage-nobles called the Oyo Mesi, which holds genuine check-and-balance authority. Of all the world's governments, Oyo comes closest to functional constitutional monarchy.

The Zulu Empire (Southern Africa)

A military kingdom of extraordinary discipline and aggressive expansion, currently in an early period of rapid growth under a line of powerful earth-mages. Zulu military doctrine emphasizes speed, coordination, and shock — their infantry formations supplemented by earth-mages who can reshape terrain mid-battle have proven devastatingly effective against neighbors.

The Bornu Empire (Central-Northern Africa, Lake Chad region)

A trading empire controlling the trans-Saharan routes. Bornu's power derives from commercial wealth and water-mage expertise — in a desert region, the ability to locate, move, and preserve water is the most strategic magical ability imaginable. Bornu water-mages are among the most politically important people on the continent.

The Igbo Confederacy (Southeastern Nigeria region)

Unlike the surrounding empires, the Igbo Confederacy is a decentralized republic — a collection of city-states governed by councils in which magical and non-magical citizens hold seats alongside each other, with voting rights proportional to community contribution rather than magical ability. It is, in the current world, the closest thing to a democracy that exists. It is also, consequently, looked at with deep suspicion by every mage-ruling empire surrounding it.

The Igbo Confederacy's magical tradition emphasizes healing and nature magic, and their healers travel freely across the continent under a tradition of protected neutrality.

PART THREE — THE PROTAGONIST

DR. ELIAS CORD / JONAS VON STEIN

Original identity: Dr. Elias Cord, 54 years old.

Senior Research Fellow, Theoretical Physics & Applied Dark Matter Studies, Zurich Advanced Sciences Institute, 2247 A.D. Three doctorates. Author of 41 published papers, of which 38 were considered controversial at time of publication. Twice-divorced. No children. Next of kin: one sister who sends annual calendar gifts and does not understand his work.

Current vessel: Jonas Aldric von Stein, 14 years old. Third son of Baron Aldric von Stein, Bavarian Reaches, German Empire. Assessed magically inert at age six. Considered the family's quiet disappointment. No formal education beyond basic literacy and arithmetic. Has not touched the practice sword in two years.

What Elias inherits from Jonas: The body, the memories (accessible but not dominant), the language, and the social context. Jonas was magically inert in every conventional sense. He brought nothing extraordinary to this arrangement.

What the transit itself produced: The dark matter dimensional event did not arrive cleanly. The collision between Elias's consciousness crossing dimensional boundaries and Jonas's living body restructured something at the energetic level — producing Entropic Absorption, an ability that belongs to neither man by birth but emerged from the violent collision of a 23rd century physics experiment with a medieval child's body. It is, in the most literal sense, a scar. One that absorbs fire, lightning, Flux, and everything else directed at it.

What Elias brings to Jonas: Thirty-one years of scientific training. The complete theoretical knowledge base of a 23rd century ph
