Chapter 14 - Choosing Herself

CHAPTER FOURTEEN: Choosing Herself

The sky was quiet.

Too quiet.

Chidimma walked slowly, her steps steady but heavy, as she left the building behind.

She didn't look back.

Not once.

Each step felt like a decision.

A painful one.

But a necessary one.

Her chest tightened as memories flooded her mind.

Julian's voice.

His eyes.

His words.

"It's not that easy…"

She let out a small, bitter laugh.

"It was easy when you left me," she whispered to herself.

By the time she got home, the silence greeted her again.

Amaka was resting.

The house still felt unsettled.

But this time—

Chidimma felt different.

She walked into her room and closed the door behind her.

Slowly.

Then she leaned against it.

Her body finally giving in.

The tears came.

Quiet at first.

Then stronger.

She slid down to the floor, covering her face as everything she had been holding in finally broke free.

"I can't keep doing this…" she whispered.

"I can't keep getting hurt."

Minutes passed.

Or maybe hours.

She didn't know.

But slowly—

She wiped her tears.

Took a deep breath.

And stood up.

Her reflection stared back at her from the mirror.

Not broken.

Not weak.

But tired.

And stronger than before.

"No more," she said quietly.

"No more waiting. No more hoping."

The next morning—

Chidimma arrived at the office early.

Earlier than usual.

Her expression calm.

Cold.

Decided.

She walked straight to her desk and sat down.

Ignoring the curious looks around her.

"Miss Chidimma?"

She looked up.

Julian.

Standing there.

For a moment—

Everything inside her wanted to react.

To feel.

To remember.

But she didn't.

"Good morning, sir," she said professionally.

The word hit him instantly.

Sir.

Julian frowned slightly.

"Can we talk?" he asked.

"No," she replied calmly.

"I have work to do."

That wasn't the answer he expected.

"Chidimma—"

"Please keep it professional," she interrupted.

Her voice steady.

Controlled.

A silence fell between them.

But this time—

It wasn't emotional.

It was distance.

"I've made my decision," she continued.

"I'm here to work. Nothing more."

Julian stared at her.

Searching.

Hoping.

But all he saw was a version of her he had never seen before.

Untouchable.

"And if I don't agree to that?" he asked.

Chidimma met his eyes.

Unafraid.

"Then I'll resign," she said.

That stopped him.

Completely.

Because for the first time—

He realized something terrifying.

She was no longer waiting for him.

And if he didn't act soon—

He might lose her forever.

As Julian stood there, silent and conflicted—

Chidimma turned back to her work.

Calm.

Focused.

But deep inside—

Her heart was still healing.

And this time—

She was choosing herself first.
