Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The World That Chose Him

The air didn't move.

Not naturally.

Kael noticed it as soon as he took his third step.

The wind wasn't flowing.

It… pulsed.

Like the entire world was breathing.

Slow.

Uneven.

Wrong.

His gaze shifted across the ruined city.

The buildings weren't just broken.

They were warped.

Edges bent at impossible angles.

Windows stretched too long.

Shadows didn't align with the light.

"…This place isn't damaged," Kael muttered.

His eyes narrowed.

"It's corrupted."

The ground beneath his feet let out a faint crack.

Not from pressure.

From response.

The shadows around his legs tightened slightly.

Alert.

Listening.

Kael stopped walking.

"…You feel it too."

The shadows twitched.

Agreement.

Then—

Another scream.

Closer this time.

Cut short.

Abruptly.

Silence followed.

Kael didn't rush.

He didn't panic.

He observed.

His head tilted slightly, calculating.

"Seven participants…"

His voice was low.

"…One just died."

No notification confirmed it.

But he knew.

Instinct.

Or something deeper.

Something inside him… counted.

The shadows rippled faintly.

Satisfied.

Kael's expression darkened slightly.

"…So that's how this works."

Not a game.

Not a test.

A selection.

A hunt.

And he—

Was both predator…

And prey.

A faint sound echoed behind him.

Not a scream.

Not human.

A dragging noise.

Slow.

Wet.

Deliberate.

Kael didn't turn immediately.

"…Too obvious."

The shadows beneath him shifted subtly—

Spreading.

Thinning.

Reaching.

Scanning.

Then—

They touched something.

Cold.

Moving.

Alive.

Kael moved.

Instantly.

He pivoted—

His arm snapping outward.

"Shadow Grasp."

The darkness surged—

Faster than before.

Sharper.

More precise.

The shadow hand shot across the ground—

And caught something.

A shape twisted violently in the distance.

Distorted.

Humanoid—

But wrong.

Its limbs bent too many times.

Its head jerked unnaturally.

Its mouth—

Too wide.

Too open.

Too full of nothing.

It didn't scream.

It vibrated.

A sound that didn't belong in the air.

Kael's grip tightened.

The shadow hand crushed inward—

But—

It resisted.

"…Stronger than before."

The creature's body flickered—

Like it wasn't fully there.

Like it existed between moments.

Then—

It lunged.

Not physically.

It shifted.

The distance between them collapsed.

Instantly.

Right in front of him.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…Fast."

The creature's arm twisted—

Reaching for his face—

And—

Stopped.

Mid-air.

The shadows around Kael's body surged upward—

Wrapping around him—

Blocking—

Defending—

Reacting on their own.

Kael didn't flinch.

Didn't step back.

Didn't breathe.

"…Good."

His voice dropped.

Cold.

Controlled.

"You learn fast."

Or maybe—

They did.

The shadows tightened—

Then—

Expanded.

Violently.

The creature's body was yanked backward—

Dragged into the ground—

Half-submerged in darkness that shouldn't exist on solid ground.

It struggled.

Violently.

Its limbs tearing against nothing.

Its form glitching.

Breaking.

Reforming.

Kael stepped forward.

Slow.

Measured.

Curious.

"…What are you?"

The creature's head snapped toward him—

Too fast—

Too sharp—

Its mouth opened wider—

Until it split.

And from inside—

Darkness.

Pure.

Endless.

The same as where he came from.

Kael froze for half a second.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"…You're from there."

The shadows reacted instantly.

Not aggressive.

Not defensive.

Resonant.

Like meeting something familiar.

The creature lunged again—

But this time—

Kael moved first.

He raised his hand—

And clenched.

The shadow hand compressed—

Condensed—

Then—

Imploded.

Silently.

The creature collapsed inward—

Crushed into nothing—

Its form breaking apart into fragments of shadow—

Which didn't scatter.

Didn't disappear.

They hovered.

Trembling.

Then—

Slowly—

They drifted toward Kael.

His eyes narrowed.

"…So that's how it works."

The fragments touched his body—

And were absorbed.

Seamlessly.

Like they belonged there.

A notification appeared.

[Entity Eliminated]

[Essence Absorbed]

[Shadow Affinity Increased]

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…I see."

Not just survival.

Growth.

Through consumption.

Through dominance.

Through devouring.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

Small.

Cold.

Dangerous.

"…Then this world made a mistake."

The shadows around him deepened.

Darker than before.

Heavier.

More alive.

Another notification flickered—

But this one—

Glitched.

[Warning—]

[Irregular Presence Detected]

[—Data Corrupted—]

Kael's smile faded.

"…Irregular?"

The air shifted.

Not the pulsing from before.

Something else.

Something watching—

Closer now.

Not above.

Not far.

Nearby.

Very nearby.

Kael turned slowly.

The ruined buildings ahead—

Moved.

Not physically.

Not visibly.

But their positions felt different.

Like the world rearranged itself when he wasn't looking.

"…So it's not just creatures."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"The world itself…"

A shadow stretched unnaturally across the ground—

Not his.

Not aligned with anything.

It moved.

Independently.

Toward him.

Kael didn't step back.

Instead—

He stepped forward.

Directly into it.

The moment his foot touched the unnatural shadow—

The world flickered.

For a split second—

Everything vanished.

No sky.

No ruins.

No sound.

Just—

Darkness.

The same one.

The one that watched.

The one that chose him.

Then—

It snapped back.

Kael stood still.

Completely still.

"…You're still here."

Not gone.

Not left behind.

It followed him.

Or maybe—

It never let him go.

High above—

Beyond perception—

The unseen presence shifted slightly.

Interest deepened.

"Adaptation speed…"

A pause.

"…abnormal."

Kael lifted his head slightly.

Not enough to see it.

But enough to acknowledge something was there.

Watching.

Measuring.

Waiting.

"…Keep watching."

His voice was quiet.

But carried weight.

"I'm not done yet."

In the distance—

Another scream.

Two this time.

Overlapping.

Desperate.

Alive.

Kael turned toward it.

No hesitation now.

No pause.

No question.

The shadows beneath him surged forward—

Faster—

Sharper—

Eager.

He walked.

Then—

He ran.

And the Nightmare—

Began to move with him.
