Chapter 45 - Chapter 4: The Child Within the Shadow

Kael didn't breathe.

The silhouette inside his shadow remained motionless.

A child.

Small.

Barefoot.

Head lowered.

Exactly like the one Kael had seen in the white void.

Kael stared at it.

"Get out."

Nothing happened.

His shadow stretched across the broken ground.

The child's silhouette remained.

"GET OUT."

The Mark of Devouring erupted.

Darkness surged through the ruins.

The ground beneath Kael fractured.

But the child didn't move.

Instead—

it raised one hand.

And pointed behind Kael.

Kael spun around.

Nothing.

He turned back.

The child was gone.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Then he heard a whisper.

"Too slow."

Kael froze.

The voice hadn't come from outside.

It had come from inside his mind.

His shadow suddenly separated from his feet.

It rose behind him.

Not like smoke.

Not like darkness.

Like a living thing.

A massive figure emerged.

The Shadow Sovereign.

But this time, it didn't attack.

It knelt.

Kael stared.

The Sovereign lowered its head before him.

Elyra's eyes widened.

For the first time since Kael had met her, she looked genuinely shocked.

"No..."

Kael glanced at her.

"What?"

She took a step backward.

"The Sovereign has never bowed."

Kael looked at the enormous shadow.

"Then why is it doing it now?"

Elyra's voice became quiet.

"Because it recognizes its creator."

Silence.

Kael's eyes widened.

"My creator?"

The Sovereign slowly raised one hand.

A black symbol appeared above its palm.

Kael recognized it immediately.

The same symbol that had appeared beside the Mark of Devouring.

But now he could finally understand it.

It wasn't a second mark.

It was a name.

ORIGIN.

The moment Kael read it, reality trembled.

A distant bell rang.

Once.

Then twice.

Then countless times.

Elyra looked toward the horizon.

"They're coming."

Kael frowned.

"Who?"

The answer came from the sky.

Thousands of white cracks appeared across the clouds.

Something began descending through them.

Not creatures.

Not gods.

Figures.

Human-shaped.

Completely white.

Faceless.

Each one carried a black spear.

Kael stared upward.

"Those aren't gods."

"No."

Elyra stepped beside him.

"They're the ones who killed the gods."

Kael smiled faintly.

"Finally."

Elyra looked at him.

"You shouldn't be happy."

"Why?"

"Because they aren't here to fight you."

Kael's smile disappeared.

One of the white figures slowly raised its spear.

The world stopped.

Every sound vanished.

Then the figure spoke.

Its voice came from everywhere at once.

"ORIGIN DETECTED."

Kael's Mark burned.

Another figure appeared.

"DEVOURER DETECTED."

Another.

"SOVEREIGN DETECTED."

The sky filled with them.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Kael looked at Elyra.

"How many?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

Kael looked back toward the army.

Then something strange happened.

The child appeared again.

This time, standing beside him.

Only Kael could see it.

The child looked up at him.

"Don't fight them."

Kael frowned.

"Why?"

The child pointed toward the sky.

One of the white figures suddenly turned.

It looked directly at Kael.

Then it removed its mask.

There was no face beneath it.

Only a black void.

Kael's instincts screamed.

The child whispered:

"Because they're not the enemy."

Kael stared.

"Then what are they?"

The child looked toward the black scar across the sky.

"The locks."

A pause.

"And something has just opened the door."

The black scar split apart.

Something enormous began pushing through.

The white figures immediately dropped to their knees.

Even the Shadow Sovereign bowed.

Elyra whispered a single word.

"Impossible."

Kael looked at her.

"What?"

She stared at the opening sky.

"That thing was erased."

A vast presence emerged.

Not a body.

Not a creature.

A concept given shape.

The world began losing its color.

Mountains disappeared.

The horizon disappeared.

Even the stars vanished.

Kael felt the Mark of Devouring trembling.

Then the voice came.

Quiet.

Ancient.

Familiar.

"Kael."

He froze.

He knew that voice.

It was his own.

The presence spoke again.

"You took my name."

Kael's eyes widened.

The child beside him smiled.

And whispered:

"Now you remember."

Kael's memories exploded open.

The throne.

The chains.

The gods.

The white void.

The Shadow Sovereign.

And finally—

himself.

Standing before all of them.

Not as their prisoner.

Not as their enemy.

As their creator.

Kael staggered.

A single sentence appeared inside his mind.

I was never born.

I was made.

The darkness above the world opened its eye.

And I was made to devour the one who made me.

Kael slowly raised his head.

For the first time...

he was afraid of his own past.
