Chapter 283 - Chapter 283

Rayleigh and Ais had made less visible progress because the source was throwing nearly everything it had at them.

The signal root remained behind the defenders, sending rapid pulses through the surrounding walls, and every time Rayleigh came close enough to deepen Benihime's earlier cut, another group shifted formation and forced him back.

The central mass had understood perfectly well which root mattered most.

Ais was the only reason Rayleigh could keep reaching it at all.

Tempest stayed wrapped tightly around her body, used in short bursts rather than maintained at full output.

Gonryōmaru alternated between sealed steel and brief Shikai discharges, with Ais refusing to answer the same situation the same way twice.

One monster expected her to retreat from a spear thrust.

She stepped inside instead.

Another moved to cover that line, already anticipating the counter.

Ais never drew Gonryōmaru.

She drove her knee into its abdomen and used its body to block the spear-user behind it.

A third attacked during the transition.

A narrow pulse of electricity travelled through the metal weapon in its hand and numbed the arm long enough for Ais to cut the controlling strand from its back.

The source adapted again.

Two absorption-type creatures stopped trying to engage Ais altogether and positioned themselves beside the signal root, using their bodies as shields whenever Rayleigh approached.

He cut one across the shoulder with Benihime.

A mouth opened around the wound, and the crimson spiritual pressure coating the blade dimmed as the creature began feeding.

Rayleigh withdrew immediately.

The monster followed.

Exactly what he wanted.

He slipped around its next attack, caught the back of its neck with one hand, and used Shunpo to carry both of them several meters away from the root before throwing it into another defender.

Ais reached the pair first.

Gonryōmaru shattered one magic stone.

Benihime took the other.

They turned back toward the root.

Another pulse travelled through it, and more monsters entered the fight.

Rayleigh clicked his tongue.

'It spent the whole expedition learning efficiency. Apparently reinforcements were part of the lesson.'

Ais landed beside him. Her breathing had grown heavier, though her sword hand remained steady.

"You need time."

"A little."

"How much?"

Rayleigh looked toward the half-severed section of the root.

"Five seconds without anything trying to eat me would feel luxurious."

Ais nodded as though that were entirely reasonable.

"I'll give you ten."

Then she ran straight toward the largest cluster.

Rayleigh nearly called after her before he understood.

She wanted them to follow.

Tempest expanded around her in the strongest burst she had used since entering the chamber.

Every specialized monster in range immediately reacted.

The source knew her speed, knew Gonryōmaru, and knew what happened whenever Ais reached an undefended target.

The black strands pulsed.

Five creatures left Rayleigh.

Then seven.

Ais changed direction and dragged all of them toward the center of the cavern.

The formation around the signal root opened.

Rayleigh moved.

Shunpo carried him through the gap, and Benihime entered the wound he had already created.

The black tissue tightened around the blade almost at once, trying to close the cut while draining the spiritual pressure coating the edge.

Rayleigh dismissed the crimson energy.

Steel would do.

Both hands closed around the hilt, and he drove Benihime deeper using nothing but physical strength.

The root was thicker than his torso, and its black fibers tore apart layer by layer.

Commands flooded outward through the network.

Behind him, Ais became surrounded.

The seven creatures she had drawn away stopped attacking independently and formed a containment pattern around her.

Heavy bodies sealed off the obvious escape routes, weapon-users controlled the space between them, and the absorption specialists positioned themselves wherever Gonryōmaru's lightning would have been most effective.

Everything about the formation had been built from what the source knew about Ais.

She looked around once and lowered Gonryōmaru.

The hesitation that passed through the group lasted less than a heartbeat.

That was enough.

"Tempest."

Wind burst beneath her feet.

Ais did not charge any of them.

She went up.

The formation had been designed to stop her from crossing the cavern horizontally. Nobody had been placed above her.

She cleared the first rank in one leap, twisted in the air, and came down behind the entire formation.

Gonryōmaru cut three controlling strands in a single pass.

Coordination vanished.

Ais landed among them.

What followed was messy, but Rayleigh did not need elegant. He heard magic stones shattering behind him while he kept cutting.

The signal root was already more than halfway severed.

Across the cavern, an explosion erupted near the energy junction.

Asfi had reached the right place.

'Good.'

Tsubaki was ready.

Ardi and Lyra were ready.

They only needed the final strikes close enough together that the source could not reroute around the damage.

Rayleigh drove Benihime deeper.

The root thrashed, and a black tendril tore free from the wall and wrapped around his forearm.

His skin went numb where it touched.

Spiritual pressure began draining directly from his body.

Rayleigh severed the tendril with his free hand before the connection could strengthen, but even that brief contact tightened his vision for an instant.

The exhaustion from Knossos had never completely disappeared. He had recovered, certainly, but recovery did not mean the strain had never happened.

Alfia's voice surfaced in his memory with irritating clarity.

'Do not ever make me feel that silence again.'

Rayleigh clenched his jaw.

'Yeah, yeah. I remember.'

'No Bankai then.'

...

Asfi secured the final charge around the true energy junction.

The visible root had been stripped away until only the narrower core remained, wedged deep inside the Dungeon wall where it drew power from the surrounding labyrinth.

Several meters in front of her, five dissolving monster corpses lay around Tsubaki's boots.

Another creature charged.

This one carried no weapon.

Its entire torso had become a single enormous absorption cavity surrounded by thick armor, evidently designed to swallow Tobiume's fire at close range.

Tsubaki stared at it, then glanced toward Asfi.

"Tell me when."

"Three more seconds."

Tsubaki planted her feet.

The creature opened itself wider.

She grinned.

"Sure."

Tsubaki fired.

The monster committed fully, spreading its absorption cavity toward the incoming crimson blast.

The fireball passed underneath it.

Tsubaki had aimed at the floor.

The explosion launched the Enhanced Species into the air with its absorption cavity still facing forward.

Tsubaki stepped beneath it.

Tobiume entered from below.

The magic stone shattered before the body came back down.

Behind her, Asfi finished the final connection.

"Ready. The charges will expose the core first. You'll have to destroy the remaining tissue before it reconnects to the Dungeon."

Tsubaki glanced at the black junction.

"How long?"

"Probably less than two seconds."

Tsubaki's smile widened.

"Plenty."

She raised Tobiume and waited.

...

Ardi's arms were beginning to ache.

Keeping Nejibana embedded in the material root while resisting its attempts to close around the weapon had turned into a contest of raw strength.

Lyra's threads were still anchored around the split tissue, but new strands had already begun growing toward both women.

Arachne's poison slowed them.

It did not stop them.

Lyra's breathing sharpened as the root stole another small amount of spiritual pressure through the silk.

"Hurry up, Rayleigh. I'm charging you for every strand this thing eats."

Despite the strain, Ardi smiled.

"He'll argue about the price."

"He owns five Zanpakutō. He can afford it."

The joke ended there.

A black tendril swept in from the side.

Ardi released one hand from Nejibana and caught it against the shaft before it could reach Lyra.

Another came from behind.

Arachne's silk snapped around a broken brood sac and swung the heavy shell into its path, crushing the tendril against the floor.

Neither woman allowed the attacks to pull them away from the junction.

The damaged material channel kept weakening between them.

They waited for Rayleigh.

...

Benihime finally reached the far side.

The signal root was nearly severed.

Ais returned with blood running down one arm and several monsters dissolving behind her.

None of her injuries looked serious, and more importantly, nothing remained between them and the root.

Rayleigh looked across the cavern.

Tsubaki stood ready beside the energy junction. Asfi had one hand above the detonator. Ardi and Lyra were still holding the split material root open.

Everyone was waiting on him.

The central mass realized it too.

Every strand in the chamber contracted toward the source.

The remaining monsters abandoned the adventurers and turned toward the roots, trying to throw themselves into defensive positions.

They were too late.

"Now!"

Asfi triggered the charges.

The wall around the energy junction exploded outward, exposing the narrow black core for less than a second.

Tsubaki was already swinging.

Tobiume struck physically through the damaged section.

The core snapped.

The effect travelled through the cavern immediately.

The red glow running through hundreds of black veins dimmed as the source lost its direct supply from the Dungeon.

At the center, Ardi forced one final burst of water through the material channel.

The internal pressure tore the split wider.

Lyra pulled.

Arachne's threads ripped the two halves apart.

The material root ruptured from top to bottom, spilling black fluid and thousands of magic-stone fragments across the floor. Every brood sac still connected to it stopped developing.

Rayleigh finished the signal root a heartbeat later.

Benihime passed cleanly through.

The enormous black column separated.

For the briefest moment, the chamber remained unchanged.

Then every controlling strand went slack.

Monsters froze where they stood.

Some remained locked in whatever stance the final command had given them, while others staggered as the borrowed techniques simply disappeared from their bodies.

One creature beside Ais looked down at the stolen sword in its hand.

Its grip loosened.

Then instinct returned.

It screamed and lunged at the nearest moving target.

Another Enhanced Species attacked it first.

Within seconds, the organized army collapsed into a chaotic brawl.

Rayleigh stepped away from the severed root.

"Roots are down! Don't waste energy cleaning up every monster. Stay together and watch the source!"

The warning came just in time.

The central mass began to change.

With the energy connection gone, the glow inside its thousands of stored magic stones started to fade.

No more fragments reached the brood sacs, and the remaining Enhanced Species no longer obeyed the signal network.

The source abandoned the entire system.

Smaller veins tore themselves out of the walls and whipped backward toward the central body, dragging anything useful with them—loose magic stones, unfinished brood sacs, dead monster tissue, even pieces of fused weapons.

Asfi saw it first.

"It's reclaiming everything it can still reach!"

Tsubaki destroyed a tendril carrying several magic stones with a fireball.

Ardi swept another cluster aside with a short burst from Nejibana.

Lyra anchored a half-formed monster to a broken pillar before it could be dragged away, while Rayleigh cut three returning strands with Benihime.

There were too many to stop them all.

The central body began shrinking.

Bloated tissue collapsed inward as the parasite discarded everything it could no longer support. Empty brood sacs dried and split apart.

Thick roots withdrew from the Dungeon walls, leaving wounds that immediately began filling with fresh pale stone.

The magic stones stored inside the mass were pulled toward the center and compressed into an increasingly dense cluster.

As the enormous body withdrew from the wall, Ais noticed something taking shape inside it.

"There."

Rayleigh followed her gaze.

A body was forming around the densest concentration of stones: humanoid, slightly larger than an ordinary man, with two arms, two legs, and a narrow torso.

The surrounding tissue folded around it layer by layer while the remaining magic stones vanished beneath hardening grey-black flesh.

Tsubaki stared.

"After all that, the damned thing decides it wants to be small?"

Asfi watched the process with considerably less amusement.

"It can't afford to maintain the larger body without the energy supply. It's discarding everything unnecessary and concentrating whatever it has left."

The final root tore free from the wall.

The Dungeon shuddered.

For the first time since they had entered the lower tunnels, the constant pull on their Zanpakutō weakened sharply and disappeared.

Gonryōmaru settled in Ais's hand. Ardi's shoulders loosened.

Lyra flexed her fingers inside Arachne's gauntlets.

Tobiume gave one final irritated vibration before falling quiet, and Rayleigh felt all five of his own Zanpakutō settle at once.

The network was gone.

The thing at its center was not.

The collapsed mass split open.

A humanoid Enhanced Species stepped onto the cavern floor.

It stood only slightly taller than Rayleigh, smooth grey armor covering most of its body while thin black lines ran beneath the surface where thousands of magic-stone fragments had been compressed into its flesh.

The absorption mouths that had covered earlier forms were gone, as were the cords linking the brood to the walls.

Now it had one mouth and one pair of eyes.

Its right hand closed around the hilt of a sword formed from the weapons swallowed by the nest.

The creature looked across the ruined cavern.

Its gaze moved over Tsubaki, Asfi, Ardi, Lyra, Ais, and finally Rayleigh.

No pulse travelled through the walls.

No external signal told it what to do.

It settled into a sword stance on its own.

Rayleigh recognized pieces of Raul, Anakitty, Ais, Tsubaki, and several unnamed adventurers in the posture, but for the first time none of those influences stood apart.

The creature was no longer selecting isolated techniques as though choosing entries from a catalogue.

It had begun combining them for itself.

Ais stepped beside Rayleigh and lowered Gonryōmaru into guard. Tsubaki joined them from the other side, while Asfi, Ardi, and Lyra closed the distance behind.

The creature adjusted its stance as the six of them gathered.

Rayleigh tightened his grip on Benihime.

They had destroyed its army, severed the roots, stopped the brood, and cut it off from the Dungeon.

All that remained was the creature standing in front of them.

It moved.

By the time the sound of its first step reached them, its sword was already coming down.
