Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: No Half Measures

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Lucas noticed that before anything else.

Not the normal kind of quiet—the kind that came from people sleeping or a place being empty. This was different. This was the kind of quiet that sat heavy in the air, like the house itself knew something was wrong.

He stood at the top of the basement stairs, one hand resting lightly against the wall, listening.

Nothing.

No movement.

No voices.

Just silence.

Behind him, Jesse paced in the kitchen again.

He hadn't really stopped since they brought Krazy-8 here.

"I'm telling you, man," Jesse said, voice low but strained, "this is not how this goes. This is not how this is supposed to go."

Lucas didn't turn around.

"How's it supposed to go?" he asked.

Jesse ran both hands through his hair. "Not like this!"

"That's not an answer."

Jesse snapped, "I don't have an answer!"

Lucas nodded slightly.

"Yeah," he said. "That's the problem."

---

Downstairs—

Krazy-8 sat against the support pole.

Still tied.

Still calm.

Too calm.

That was the part Lucas didn't like.

People in that situation weren't supposed to be calm.

They were supposed to panic.

Beg.

Yell.

Krazy-8 didn't.

He just watched.

And waited.

---

Walter was already down there.

Standing a few feet away.

Hands at his sides.

Looking at Krazy-8 like he was trying to solve something.

Lucas stepped down the stairs slowly.

Each step louder than it should have been.

Walter didn't look at him.

"You've been down here a while," Lucas said.

Walter didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"I'm thinking," he said.

Lucas leaned against the wall.

"Yeah," he said. "I can see that."

Silence.

Krazy-8's eyes moved between them.

Then settled on Walter again.

"You're not gonna do it," Krazy-8 said.

Walter didn't react.

Lucas glanced at him.

Krazy-8 continued, "You don't have it in you."

Jesse's voice came from the top of the stairs. "Yeah—see? That's what I've been saying!"

Walter finally spoke.

"You're making assumptions."

Krazy-8 shrugged slightly against the restraints. "I'm making observations."

Lucas muttered, "Same thing, depending who you ask."

Krazy-8 smirked faintly.

"You don't belong here either," he said to Lucas.

Lucas met his gaze.

"No," he said. "I just ended up here."

Krazy-8 nodded slowly. "Yeah."

---

Walter stepped closer.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

Just—

Closer.

"You attempted to have us killed," Walter said.

Krazy-8 didn't deny it.

"That's how business works," he said.

Jesse let out a sharp laugh from the stairs. "No, man, that's how you work!"

Krazy-8 looked at him. "You showed up with something new. Something valuable. And no protection."

Jesse shook his head. "That doesn't mean you get to just—"

"It means exactly that," Krazy-8 cut in.

Silence.

Lucas exhaled slowly.

Because that—

That was true.

Walter seemed to come to the same conclusion.

"You would have killed us," Walter said.

Krazy-8 held his gaze. "Yes."

Jesse stepped back slightly.

"…Okay," he muttered. "Cool. Cool, cool, cool."

Lucas rubbed his face. "Yeah. Not great."

---

Time dragged.

Minutes felt longer.

Every second stretched.

Walter moved away.

Started pacing.

Not like Jesse.

Slower.

Measured.

Deliberate.

Thinking.

Lucas watched him.

Because that was worse than anything else.

Walter thinking meant something was coming.

And when it came—

It wouldn't be reversible.

---

Upstairs—

Jesse grabbed a beer.

Opened it.

Didn't drink.

Just held it.

"This is messed up," he said again.

Lucas sat across from him.

"Yeah."

Jesse looked at him. "You're way too calm about this."

Lucas shrugged. "I'm not calm."

"You look calm."

"That's because panicking doesn't help."

Jesse let out a breath. "Man…"

He finally took a sip.

Then another.

Then set the bottle down harder than necessary.

"We can't kill him," he said.

Lucas didn't answer.

Jesse leaned forward. "Say it."

Lucas looked at him.

"You want me to say we won't?" he asked.

"Yeah."

Lucas shook his head.

"I'm not saying that."

Jesse stared at him.

"…You're messed up."

Lucas nodded once.

"Probably."

---

Back downstairs—

Walter stood still again.

Looking at Krazy-8.

Then at something else.

Something on the floor.

Lucas noticed it.

Followed his gaze.

A plate.

Broken.

One piece missing.

Lucas frowned slightly.

"…You see that?" he said quietly.

Walter nodded once.

"Yes."

Krazy-8 watched them both now.

More alert.

More aware.

"What?" Jesse called from upstairs. "What is it?"

Lucas didn't answer.

He stepped closer.

Careful.

Eyes scanning.

Then—

There.

A shard.

Sharp.

Hidden.

Close enough to reach.

Lucas exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah," he said.

Walter's voice dropped.

"He's planning something."

Krazy-8 didn't deny it.

Didn't even try.

He just smiled slightly.

That was enough.

---

Jesse came down the stairs.

"What?" he asked. "What's going on?"

Lucas pointed.

Jesse followed.

Saw it.

His face changed immediately.

"…Oh."

Walter stepped back slightly.

Creating distance.

Thinking again.

But faster now.

Sharper.

The decision was coming.

Lucas could feel it.

---

Krazy-8 spoke again.

"You let me go," he said, "this doesn't have to go further."

No one answered.

Because that was a lie.

They all knew it.

Walter said it first.

"That is not true."

Krazy-8 held his gaze.

"…No," he admitted. "It's not."

Silence.

Heavy.

Final.

---

Jesse shook his head. "We can still—there's gotta be—"

"There isn't," Walter said.

Jesse looked at him.

"No," he said again.

Walter stepped forward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Lucas didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Because this wasn't his moment.

This was Walter's.

And Walter—

Walter had already decided.

---

It happened quietly.

No shouting.

No warning.

Walter moved in—

Grabbed—

Pulled—

Krazy-8 struggled—

Brief—

Violent—

Then—

Still.

---

Silence.

Complete.

Jesse froze.

"…No," he whispered.

Lucas exhaled slowly.

Didn't look away.

Because this—

This was the line.

And Walter White had just crossed it.

---

Walter stepped back.

Breathing heavier now.

Hands shaking—

Just slightly.

He looked at Krazy-8.

Then at the floor.

Then away.

Jesse backed up the stairs.

"No," he said again. "No, no, no…"

Lucas stayed where he was.

Watching.

Processing.

Because there was no undoing this.

No fixing it.

No pretending it didn't happen.

He looked at Walter.

"…Yeah," he said quietly.

"That's it."

Walter didn't answer.

---

Later—

The house felt different.

Not just quiet now.

Empty.

Lucas stood outside.

Night air cold.

Still.

Jesse sat on the steps.

Head down.

Walter stood by the car.

Separate.

All of them.

Separate now.

Lucas leaned against the railing.

No one spoke.

For a long time.

Then Jesse said—

"…We're done."

Walter didn't answer.

Lucas looked at him.

"…No," Lucas said.

Jesse looked up.

"What?"

Lucas met his eyes.

"We're not done."

Silence.

Because they all knew.

This wasn't the end.

This was the beginning.

---

That night—

Lucas lay in bed.

Staring at the ceiling.

The wall was quiet.

No music.

No knocking.

Nothing.

He checked the time.

1:59 AM.

A beat.

2:00.

[Daily Pull Available]

Lucas let out a breath.

"…Right."

He pressed it.

The spin began.

Slowed.

Stopped.

[Reward Acquired]

Bent Paperclip

Lucas stared at it.

Then laughed quietly.

"Yeah," he muttered.

"That feels about right."

He set it on the nightstand.

Useless.

Completely useless.

Just like the idea that things could go back to normal.

Lucas closed his eyes.

And for the first time since this all started—

He didn't feel like he was getting pulled into something.

He felt like he was already in it.
