Chapter 33 - Chapter 32:Proof

Morning came differently this time.

Haruto knew before opening his eyes.

Not because of warmth.

Because of absence.

The pressure from the ruin was gone.

Not entirely.

Just enough to notice.

He opened his eyes slowly.

Stone.

Still stone.

No changes.

Belial was sitting near the entrance.

Looking outside.

Haruto sat up.

The first thing he checked wasn't the wall.

It wasn't the cloak.

It was himself.

Hands.

Same.

Breathing.

Same.

Thoughts.

Same.

He stayed still for a second.

Then quietly—

"…okay."

Belial glanced over.

"…you expecting something?"

Haruto stood.

"…a little."

Belial looked away again.

"…that's healthy."

Haruto ignored that.

His eyes drifted toward Arthur's corner.

The cloak remained folded.

The carvings remained.

His line remained.

You noticed.

Nothing changed.

No hidden reaction.

No approval.

Haruto stared for a moment.

Then nodded once.

That felt better.

Belial looked at him.

"…disappointed?"

Haruto shook his head.

"…not really."

A pause.

"…I think I prefer this."

Belial didn't respond.

Haruto turned and walked outside.

The cold greeted him immediately.

The wind passed through him.

His clothes felt thin again.

The desert looked larger.

His footprints behind him faded faster.

But they still appeared.

That made him stop.

He looked down.

One step.

Visible.

Two.

Visible.

Three—

Gone.

Haruto stared.

Then walked again.

Same result.

Not immediate.

Delayed.

He looked back.

Nothing remained.

Belial walked out after him.

"…you noticed."

Haruto sighed.

"…you say that a lot."

Belial sat down.

"…because most things don't."

Haruto looked at the empty sand.

"…I'm fading faster again."

Belial nodded.

"…yeah."

Haruto looked toward the horizon.

No shape.

Nothing waiting.

Just empty distance.

"…and?"

Belial blinked.

Haruto looked at it.

"…you look like that means something."

Belial was quiet.

Then:

"…it means something changed."

Haruto frowned.

"…because I left the cloak?"

Belial looked at the ruin.

"…because something stopped looking."

Silence.

Haruto looked toward the horizon again.

Empty.

That should feel safer.

It didn't.

He looked at his footprints.

Gone.

Then quietly—

"…that's annoying."

Belial looked over.

Haruto kept staring ahead.

"…I thought I'd feel better."

Belial didn't answer.

Haruto looked at his hand.

Still there.

Still himself.

Then—

he did something small.

He bent down.

Picked up a stone.

And pressed it into the sand.

Not deep.

Just enough.

A line.

Then another.

Then another.

Belial watched.

Haruto stood.

Looked at the marks.

Three short lines.

Nothing special.

Belial tilted its head.

"…what was that?"

Haruto looked at the marks.

"…proof."

Belial blinked.

Haruto shrugged.

"…if they disappear, they disappear."

A pause.

"…I just wanted to see."

Belial stared.

Haruto turned away.

Started walking.

Ten steps.

Twenty.

Then stopped.

Looked back.

The marks remained.

Belial looked too.

Neither spoke.

The wind passed.

The first line disappeared.

Then the second.

Then—

the third remained.

Haruto stared.

Belial stood.

Haruto walked back.

Stopped in front of the remaining line.

No difference.

No special shape.

Just…

there.

Belial looked at him.

"…you did something different?"

Haruto thought.

Then shook his head.

"…no."

Belial stared at the line.

Then quietly—

"…why three?"

Haruto blinked.

Looked at the sand.

Thought.

Then shrugged.

"…felt right."

Silence.

Belial looked away.

Too quickly.

Haruto noticed.

"…what?"

Belial stayed quiet.

Then:

"…nothing."

That was suspicious.

Haruto looked back at the remaining line.

The desert stayed silent.

The line remained.

His footprints didn't.

The line did.

He crouched.

Touched it.

Nothing happened.

But suddenly—

he understood something.

Arthur counted.

Repeated.

Held.

Preserved.

But—

Haruto hadn't tried to preserve this.

He just made it.

And left.

His eyes stayed on the mark.

Then quietly—

"…that's stupid."

Belial looked over.

Haruto stood.

Looked at the horizon.

Then smiled a little.

Small.

Tired.

Real.

"…I think I get it."

Belial tilted its head.

Haruto turned back toward the ruin.

"…maybe not everything has to stay."

Belial watched him.

Didn't speak.

Haruto walked.

His footprints faded.

But behind him—

one line remained in the sand.

Not because it was held.

Not because it was remembered.

Not because someone was watching.

It remained because—

for whatever reason—

the world didn't mind that one existing.

And somehow—

that felt better.
