In a split second, as the dark-red fireball hurtled toward her, the Primordial Succubus instinct seized control of Lilith's body. There was no time for dodging or magic.
With a violent flare of her back muscles, she unfurled her massive purple wings and snapped them shut around herself like a cocoon, creating a barrier of Amaranth armor and leathery membrane.
BOOM!
The explosion rocked the ruins. The fireball slammed directly into her left wing. Lilith felt a searing, stinging pain radiate through the entire limb. The heat of the necromantic flame billowed into her face, forcing a stifled groan from her throat.
"Aaagh!"
She struggled to keep her balance as the smoke cleared to reveal scorched, lightly smoldering scales on her wing. She looked at the damage, and the pain, instead of breaking her, awakened something entirely new.
For the first time since arriving in this world, Lilith felt pure, primal irritation, which rapidly sharpened into a cold, clinical rage.
She snapped her head up, her blood-red eyes burning with hatred as they locked onto the source of the attack. A tall figure emerged from the shadows of the ruined mage's tower. This was no mere bag of bones.
The undead wore the tattered remnants of a sorcerer's robes, and in its hands pulsed a gnarled staff topped with a dark crystal. Its eye sockets burned with an intense, sickly green flame.
Lilith immediately triggered Analysis:
[SKELETON MAGE]
Type: Elite Level 1 Monster.
History: Once the proud ruler of this forest village, a mage fascinated by the secrets of magic. He has since been transformed by potent necromantic energy into a skeleton mage. He still retains a portion of the magical abilities he possessed in life...
Threat: High magical power.
The Skeleton Mage, seeing that its target was still standing, raised its staff and wordlessly began to form another dark-red fireball. Lilith was ready this time.
As the projectile launched, the Monarch - ignoring the throb in her wing - executed a lightning-fast dodge, kicking off the ground with explosive force. The fireball whistled past her and detonated behind her back, sending a fountain of rubble into the air.
The power of his magic was decent enough. Lilith realized he posed a significant threat - if he had hit someone with lower endurance stats than her, he could have easily reduced their body to ash.
"You're going to pay for that pain..." Lilith hissed, her voice dropping to an unnaturally low, predatory register.
She kicked off the ground, aided by a powerful beat of her wings, and threw herself forward at the maximum speed her body could muster. She was an amaranth projectile slicing through the air.
The Skeleton Mage, seeing the charging Monarch, hastily unleashed a translucent magical shield that encased him in a sphere of violet light. Lilith, taking a page out of Kala's predatory playbook, slightly shifted her balance mid-flight. With a twisting half-turn, she swung her leg, striking the shield like an iron whip.
CRACK!
The massive kick, saturated with the fury and strength of a Succubus, instantly shattered the barrier into a thousand shards. Lilith didn't stop. She lunged forward, and her sharp talons sliced the skeleton mage in half at the waist, robbing him of his mobility. The upper half of his body slid to the ground with a hollow rattle.
Before the undead could react in any way, Lilith landed hard and brought her foot down with all her might on his skull, crushing his head against the stone floor. The last of the green energy flickered out of his sockets, and the body finally went still.
Enraged, she continued to glare down at the heap of shattered bones. "I don't give a fuck if you're some elite monster... no one gets to hurt me and walk away!"
She felt it wasn't enough. She wanted to destroy him utterly. She flew a few meters up, folded her wings, and with massive momentum, drove her knees into the mage's dismembered body, smashing it into dozens of pieces. She didn't stop there - she stomped again and again, grinding his bones to pulp, until finally, she felt the hatred in her veins begin to recede.
Only then, with nothing but bone dust remaining, did the long-awaited system messages appear:
[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION:]
[YOU HAVE KILLED A SKELETON MAGE. GOLD +50!]
[YOU HAVE CONQUERED THE RUINS OF FALLEN DARKNESS. OBTAINED BLACK IRON CHEST X1!]
Lilith snorted angrily, glancing at her left wing. The beautiful purple membranes were scorched, and the Amaranth scales at the impact point were cracked, exposing the tissue beneath. The pain still pulsed rhythmically, fueling her lingering spite for the pile of bone dust that used to be an Elite Mage.
She walked over to where a single intact femur of the necromancer lay and crushed it under her heel with a vengeful snap.
"Filth..." she hissed, before gently - almost tenderly - stroking the damaged edge of her wing with her hands. "I hope my regeneration is just as super OP as the rest of these stats."
As her anger slowly drained away, Lilith looked at the chest that had appeared near the skeleton mage's remains. It was bound in dark metal that seemed to soak up the leftover light in the ruins.
Along with its appearance, a system window bloomed before the Monarch:
[BLACK IRON TREASURE CHEST - CONQUEST REWARD]
Type: Reward Chest (Unique).
Description: A treasure chest generated by the System as a reward for the first player to conquer the elite area [Ruins of Fallen Darkness]. Contains guaranteed, high-quality random rewards proportional to the area's difficulty.
In this world, there were two basic types of treasure chests. The first were Luck Chests - these appeared randomly anywhere in the world, often in the most remote and inaccessible corners. Their quality and content depended entirely on the pure luck of the player who stumbled upon them.
The second type were Reward Chests, like this one. They were generated by the System as a direct reward for defeating a powerful boss, clearing a dungeon, or, as in this case, conquering an elite area. The quality of such a chest was always proportional to the difficulty of the challenge.
Lilith, ignoring the ache in her wing, approached the trunk and placed her hand on the rusted lock. A loud, metallic snap echoed as the lid flew open.
[YOU HAVE OPENED THE BLACK IRON TREASURE CHEST!]
[OBTAINED: "GOLD" X200!]
[OBTAINED: "BLUEPRINT: BONE HOUSE" X1!]
Lilith stared at the contents of the chest, and her face, previously set in anger, suddenly slumped. Inside lay only a few hundred gold coins and a roll of parchment.
Only 200 gold? she thought, a wave of disappointment washing over her. For someone who just made thousands in trade, this is like spare change. And this blueprint...?
She reached for the scroll and activated Analysis:
[BLUEPRINT: BONE HOUSE]
Type: Territorial Building (Rare).
Construction Cost: Undead Gem x1, Wood x20, Stone x30, Gold x300.
Description: Allows you to build a Bone House in your territory. This building passively generates necromantic energy and increases the endurance of your undead servants (if you possess any).
Lilith rolled the parchment back up with a sigh. The building seemed powerful, but it required resources she didn't have yet and was designed for a race that she, as a Primordial Succubus, had nothing to do with. The profit was massive, but not immediate.
She was so absorbed in her gloom over the small amount of gold that she didn't notice the shadows of the ruins thickening around her. Only the soft, wet rustle of wings made her snap her head up.
With the speed of a cutting wind, three powerful silhouettes descended. They landed hard on the rubble surrounding Lilith, forming a tight perimeter. Three pairs of predatory eyes locked onto the wounded Monarch, their presence emanating an aura darker and more potent than any undead in these ruins.
Lysandra, Kala, and Mina - who had been fighting in other sectors until now - had landed, gazing at Lilith with a mixture of respect and concern.
