Cherreads

Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: THE SCORPIO GIFT

The wastes stretched endlessly before them, a cracked and barren hellscape that seemed to have no beginning and no end. Kafu and Makena had been walking for three days now, surviving on the meager supplies Makena had stashed in the tunnel, sleeping in whatever shallow caves they could find, drinking from the occasional seep of brackish water that somehow sustained life in this desolate place.

Kafu's body ached constantly. The power from Obasi's transfer had faded, leaving him at Chakra Bloom Level 3 just as the system had predicted. But even that felt like a miracle—he could feel his body humming with energy he had never possessed before, could sense the life force of the small creatures that scuttled away from their approach, could almost see the patterns of power that wove through the world around him.

The system had been mostly silent since that first overwhelming download of information, occasionally chiming in with observations or warnings, but otherwise letting Kafu process everything at his own pace.

[HOST, THERE IS A SETTLEMENT AHEAD. APPROXIMATELY THREE KILOMETERS.]

Kafu stopped, squinting into the distance. "Makena, do you see anything? Buildings? Smoke?"

She shaded her eyes, following his gaze. "Maybe... I think I see structures. Small ones. Could be a village."

"Or a trap."

"Or a trap," she agreed. "But we need supplies. Food, water, information. We can't survive out here forever."

Kafu nodded. They had been surviving on hope and scraps, and hope was not enough to fill an empty stomach.

"Let's approach carefully. Stay hidden until we know what we're dealing with."

They moved forward, keeping to the shadows of rock formations, their footsteps silent on the cracked earth. As they drew closer, the structures resolved into a small cluster of buildings—crude shelters made of stone and salvaged metal, surrounded by a low wall that looked more symbolic than defensive.

And then Kafu heard the screams.

---

They were coming from the center of the village—high-pitched, terrified, the sound of children in mortal danger. Without thinking, Kafu broke into a run, Makena right behind him.

They burst through the village gates to find a scene from nightmare.

A family—a father, a mother, and three children, the youngest no more than five—were cornered against a wall by a pack of creatures that Kafu did not recognize. They were large, wolf-like, but with scales instead of fur and eyes that glowed with hungry intelligence. Six of them, circling, snarling, waiting for the moment to strike.

The father stood in front of his family, a crude farming tool held in trembling hands. The mother had pulled the children behind her, her body shielding them as best she could. They were all bleeding from minor wounds, exhausted, terrified.

They had seconds left.

Kafu moved.

The Beast Taming technique surged through him, responding to his desperation, his need, his determination. He did not know what he was doing—his body acted on instinct, on the power that Obasi had given him, on something deeper and older that he did not yet understand.

He leaped at the nearest creature, his hands extended, and something happened.

A bond snapped into place—not full taming, but a connection, a channel. He could feel the creature's hunger, its fear, its confusion. He could also feel its power, and in that moment of connection, he took.

The creature screamed and collapsed, its life force flooding into Kafu. He felt his cultivation surge—Chakra Bloom Level 4, Level 5, Level 6—before the energy faded, leaving him gasping and the creature dead at his feet.

[GOLDEN DEMON DIVINE ACT ACTIVATED]

[HOST HAS ABSORBED THE ESSENCE AND SOUL POWER OF A SCALED WOLF]

[TEMPORARY CULTIVATION BOOST: CHAKRA BLOOM LEVEL 6]

[WARNING: THIS ABILITY CAN ONLY BE USED AT DANTIAN GENESIS LEVEL 1 EQUIVALENT. CURRENT USAGE IS 40% OF MAXIMUM CAPACITY.]

The other five creatures turned on Kafu, their glowing eyes fixed on this new threat.

Makena grabbed the family, pulling them toward the nearest shelter. "Get inside! Now!"

The father hesitated, looking at Kafu, at the stranger who had appeared from nowhere to save them.

"GO!" Makena screamed.

He went.

Kafu faced five creatures alone.

---

The first one came at him low, aiming for his legs. Kafu leaped, his enhanced reflexes just barely carrying him over the attack, and came down with both feet on the creature's spine. It crumpled, but did not die—he could feel its life force flickering, could sense that another use of the Golden Demon Divine Act would finish it.

He did not have time.

The other four attacked together, a coordinated assault that spoke of intelligence beyond simple beasts. Kafu dodged, weaved, struck back with fists and feet that should have been useless against scaled hides but somehow found purchase. The Beast Taming technique hummed in his veins, letting him sense their movements before they happened, letting him find the weak points in their attacks.

But there were too many. A claw raked across his arm, drawing blood. Teeth snapped inches from his face. He was losing.

And then—

A scream split the air. Not human. Not beast. Something else.

A massive shape descended from the sky, golden wings spread wide, a body that seemed to be made of living light. It landed between Kafu and the creatures, and Kafu got his first clear look at it.

A scorpion. A divine scorpion, twenty feet long, with eight golden wings that beat the air with the sound of thunder. But only two of those wings were fully formed—the others were smaller, underdeveloped, still growing.

[PRIMORDIAL GOLDEN DIVINE SCORPION DETECTED]

[THIS IS A TRANSCENDENT BEAST OF THE HIGHEST ORDER, A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF THE FIRST SCORPION HIMSELF]

[IT HAS CHOSEN YOU, HOST. IT OFFERS ITS ALLEGIANCE.]

The scorpion moved with impossible speed, its tail striking three of the creatures before they could react. They died instantly, their bodies dissolving into golden light that the scorpion absorbed. The remaining two fled, their hunger forgotten in the face of this new predator.

The scorpion turned to face Kafu, its eyes—dozens of them, set in two clusters—studying him with an intelligence that was almost human.

Then it spoke.

Not in words, but in images, feelings, concepts that flowed directly into Kafu's mind. He saw a cavern deep beneath the wastes, filled with golden light. He saw an egg, ancient beyond measure, waiting for an age. He saw himself, standing before that egg, and the egg cracking open to reveal... this.

You woke me, the scorpion communicated. Your power, your desperation, your promise—it reached me across the void. I am yours, as my ancestor was yours in a life before this one.

"My ancestor?" Kafu whispered.

The First Scorpion. The 8th Zodiac. Your blood carries his essence, diluted but not destroyed. I have waited 100 million years for you.

[BOND ESTABLISHED: PRIMORDIAL GOLDEN DIVINE SCORPION (8 WINGS, 2 ACTIVE)]

[THIS BEAST WILL GROW WITH YOU. AS YOUR CULTIVATION INCREASES, ITS WINGS WILL MANIFEST, ONE PER MAJOR REALM BREAKTHROUGH.]

[CURRENT CAPABILITIES: FLIGHT, POISON STING (CAN KILL UP TO LAW SEED), GOLDEN LIGHT BARRIER (PROTECTION EQUIVALENT TO DANTIAN GENESIS)]

Kafu reached out and touched the scorpion's carapace. It was warm, humming with power, alive in a way that made his soul sing.

"Thank you," he said. "Thank you for coming."

The scorpion dipped its head, then turned to look at the surviving scaled wolves, still fleeing into the wastes.

They are not worthy of taming, it communicated. But there are others. Two, nearby, that will serve you well. They grow by consuming—as you consume. They are like you.

---

Makena emerged from the shelter, the family following cautiously behind her. Her eyes went wide at the sight of the golden scorpion, but she did not run, did not scream. She simply walked up to Kafu and stood beside him, her hand finding his.

"You have the most remarkable friends," she said.

The scorpion regarded her with what might have been approval.

She carries light within her, it communicated to Kafu alone. Protect her. She is worth more than all the power you will ever gain.

Kafu squeezed her hand. "I know."

The father of the family stepped forward, his farming tool still clutched in his hands, his eyes wide with awe and fear.

"You saved us," he said. "The creatures—they've been hunting us for days. We were trying to reach the free territories, but we got lost, and then they found us, and—" He stopped, took a breath. "I'm Etan. This is my wife, Sera, and our children—Mika, Tana, and little Dorn."

The children peeked out from behind their mother, their eyes fixed on the enormous scorpion with a mixture of terror and wonder.

"We don't have much," Etan continued, "but we have something that might help you. We found it in the wastes, buried in the ruins of an ancient structure. We don't know what it is, but it glows with power we can't understand."

He reached into his pack and pulled out a small vial filled with liquid gold. It pulsed with light, and even from where he stood, Kafu could feel its power.

[PRIMORDIAL ELIXIR OF ASCENSION DETECTED]

[THIS ELIXIR CAN ELEVATE A CULTIVATOR FROM CHAKRA BLOOM TO DANTIAN GENESIS LEVEL 1 IN A SINGLE USE]

[WARNING: THE PROCESS IS EXTREMELY PAINFUL AND REQUIRES 24 HOURS OF MEDITATION]

[SUGGESTION: FIND A SAFE LOCATION BEFORE CONSUMPTION]

Kafu looked at the family, at their grateful faces, at the children who would be dead without his intervention.

"You keep that," he said. "You need it more than I do."

Etan shook his head. "We can't use it. None of us are cultivators. We don't have the talent, the potential. But you—" He looked at Kafu, at the golden scorpion, at the power that still crackled in the air around them. "You're meant for more than just surviving. Take it. Please."

[THE FAMILY'S GRATITUDE IS GENUINE. ACCEPTING THE ELIXIR WOULD NOT BE THEFT—IT WOULD BE A GIFT, FREELY GIVEN.]

Kafu hesitated, then nodded. "Thank you. I won't forget this."

Etan smiled. "We won't forget you."

---

They found shelter in a cave system beneath the ruins where the elixir had been discovered. The golden scorpion—whom Kafu had named "Aurelius" after a dream of ancient emperors—stood guard at the entrance, its presence deterring any creature that might approach.

Makena sat beside Kafu as he prepared to consume the elixir.

"Are you sure about this?" she asked. "The system said it would be painful."

"I've been in pain my whole life," Kafu said. "This is just a different kind."

She smiled, but her eyes were worried. "I'll be right here. If anything goes wrong—"

"It won't." He took her hand. "You're here. That makes everything better."

She leaned in and kissed his cheek—a brief, gentle touch that sent warmth flooding through him.

"Drink your magic potion, cultivator boy. I'll be watching."

Kafu drank.

The elixir burned.

It was like swallowing liquid fire, like having his veins replaced with molten gold, like every cell in his body being torn apart and rebuilt simultaneously. He screamed—he could not help it—and Makena grabbed his hand, holding on, refusing to let go.

The pain went on for hours. The golden scorpion's light wrapped around them both, shielding them, protecting them. And through it all, Makena held his hand and whispered words he could not hear but somehow understood.

You're not alone. You're never alone. I'm here. I'll always be here.

When it was over, Kafu opened his eyes to a world that looked completely different.

He could see energy now—the life force of the scorpion, the spiritual potential of Makena, the faint traces of power that lingered in the ancient stones around them. He could feel his own body humming with strength he had never possessed, could sense the dantian forming in his core—a reservoir of power that had not existed before.

Kafu stared at the golden text, his mind struggling to process everything.

"I have a pocket dimension," he said wonderingly. "I can store things... in another dimension."

Makena looked at him like he had grown a second head. "You have a WHAT?"

He concentrated, and a small portal opened in the air before him—a shimmering circle that led to a space that was somehow both there and not there. He reached through, felt the empty space within, and pulled out a rock he had been carrying in his pocket moments before.

Makena's jaw dropped. "You have a pocket dimension."

"I have a pocket dimension."

She stared at the portal, then at him, then burst into laughter—genuine, joyful laughter that echoed through the cave.

"Kafu, you are the most ridiculous person I have ever met. You know that, right?"

He grinned. "Is that a good thing?"

"It's a Kafu thing." She hugged him, hard. "Now put some food in there before it goes bad."

---

Aurelius communicated that the two beasts the scorpion had sensed were close—a pair of young transcendent beasts, siblings, who survived by hunting and consuming other creatures. They were dangerous, cunning, and exactly what Kafu needed.

They will not come to you willingly, Aurelius warned. You must hunt them. Defeat them. Prove yourself worthy of their allegiance.

"How do I find them?"

They will find you. They are drawn to power, to conflict, to death. Your battle with the scaled wolves has already attracted their attention. They are watching us now.

Kafu looked around, but saw nothing. "Where?"

Patience. They will reveal themselves when they are ready. When they do, you must fight them together. If you separate them, they will pick you apart. If you face them together, you have a chance.

"And if I lose?"

Then you will be their meal. That is the way of things.

Kafu nodded. "Then I won't lose."

---

They came at midnight.

Kafu was on watch, Aurelius beside him, when he felt it—a presence, two presences, moving through the darkness with a silence that was almost supernatural. They were large, powerful, and they were hunting.

Aurelius. They're here.

I know. Be ready.

The beasts emerged from the shadows—two of them, each the size of a small horse, with sleek black fur that seemed to absorb light and eyes that glowed with hungry intelligence. They moved like predators, circling, testing, looking for weakness.

Kafu stood slowly, his hands raised, the Beast Taming technique humming in his veins.

"I don't want to fight you," he said quietly. "I want to offer you something better than hunting and killing. I want to offer you a pack. A family. A purpose."

The beasts paused, their heads tilting in what might have been curiosity.

They understand you, Aurelius communicated. But they do not trust you. You must prove yourself.

One of the beasts lunged.

Kafu was ready. He dodged, rolled, came up with a handful of sand that he threw into the creature's eyes. It snarled, shook its head, and its sibling attacked from the other side.

The battle was savage.

Kafu fought with everything he had—the Beast Taming technique letting him anticipate their moves, the Golden Demon Divine Act flaring as he absorbed small amounts of their power with each glancing blow, Aurelius striking from above with his tail whenever the beasts got too close.

But they were strong, fast, and they fought together with a coordination that spoke of years of hunting as a pair. They cornered him, trapped him, and for a terrifying moment, Kafu thought he was going to die.

Then he remembered something Aurelius had said.

If you face them together, you have a chance. If you separate them, they will pick you apart.

He couldn't separate them physically—they were too fast, too coordinated. But maybe he could separate them mentally.

He reached out with the Beast Taming technique, not to tame, but to connect. To communicate. To show them what he had seen, what he had felt, what he had become.

I was a slave, he projected. I was nothing. I was less than nothing. But someone believed in me. Someone gave me a chance. Someone showed me that I could be more.

I'm offering you the same chance. Not as slaves—as partners. As family. As pack.

The beasts hesitated. He could feel their confusion, their hunger warring with something they had never felt before—curiosity. Interest. Hope.

We do not understand, one of them projected back. We have always been alone. Always hunted. Always killed. What is this... family you speak of?

Kafu opened his mind fully, showing them Makena's face, Aurelius's presence, the warmth of connection that he had found in the darkest place.

This. This is family.

The beasts looked at each other, and something passed between them—a communication that Kafu could not follow. Then, slowly, they lowered their heads.

We will try, they said together. We will try this... family.

[BOND ESTABLISHED: TWO SHADOWFANG CONSUMERS (TRANSCENDENT BEASTS)]

[CURRENT LEVEL: DANTIAN GENESIS LEVEL 1 EQUIVALENT]

[SPECIAL ABILITY: CONSUMPTION — EACH DEVOURED ENEMY GRANTS 1-5% OF THEIR POWER PERMANENTLY]

Kafu collapsed, exhausted but triumphant. Aurelius landed beside him, his golden light warming Kafu's battered body.

You did well, the scorpion communicated. They will serve you faithfully.

Kafu looked at his new pack—two shadowy beasts, their eyes now curious rather than hungry, watching him with something that might have been loyalty.

"I think," he said, "I need names for you."

The larger one—the one who had attacked first—stepped forward and butted its head against his hand.

You may call me Vorlag.

The smaller one—the sibling—did the same.

And me, Shade.

Kafu smiled. "Welcome to the pack, Vorlag and Shade. We're going to do great things together."

Makena found him leaning against Aurelius, the two shadowfang beasts curled at his feet.

"You look like you've been through a war," she said, sitting beside him.

"Just a battle. The war's just beginning." He showed her the system's leveling tree, summarizing what it meant. "One thousand levels. Each one harder than the last. But each one making me stronger."

Makena whistled softly. "That's... a lot."

"It is. But I've got time. I've got you. I've got them." He gestured at Aurelius, Vorlag, and Shade. "And I've got a promise to keep."

She leaned against him, and together they watched the stars wheel overhead.

"Five years to Law Venerable," she said. "Think we can do it?"

Kafu thought about the elixir burning through his veins, about the beasts that had chosen him, about the system that was even now charting his path to godhood.

"We don't have a choice," he said. "We have to."

Makena smiled. "Then we will."
