Chapter 16 - Lines Drawn in Blood

By morning, the town had already chosen its story.

Lily made sure of it.

She stood on the courthouse steps, hands trembling but voice steady, as phones pointed at her from every direction. People whispered. Some recorded. Some just watched, waiting for her to break.

She didn't.

"You're all wrong," she said, louder than she thought she could manage. "Every single one of you."

A ripple moved through the crowd.

"You're taking rumors—fear—and turning it into something it's not. Jack is not what you're saying he is. He's been trying to help. He's been protecting people while the rest of you panic and point fingers."

Someone shouted from the crowd, "Then why is everything getting worse?"

Lily didn't hesitate.

"Because none of you are listening."

More murmurs. Louder this time.

"You want someone to blame so you don't have to face what's actually happening," she continued. "So you pick the easiest target—the one person who's been out there trying to do something about it."

"That's not true!" another voice snapped. "We've seen him—"

"No, you've decided what you think you've seen," Lily cut in, her voice sharper now. "And you're too afraid to admit you might be wrong."

The tension snapped.

People started arguing—shouting over each other, dividing right there in front of her.

"She's right—this is getting out of control—"

"You're defending him because you're blind—"

"He's dangerous—"

"You don't know that—"

Lines were being drawn in real time.

And Lily had just picked a side.

Aftermath

By the time she stepped down, it was already worse.

People didn't just look at her with pity anymore.

Now there was anger.

Suspicion.

Distance.

Her phone buzzed nonstop—but not with support.

Messages flooded in:

You don't know what you're doing.

Stay away from him.

If something happens, it's on you.

She stopped reading after that.

Across the street, two men shoved each other, voices raised over something neither of them fully understood. A crowd gathered, quick and hungry.

Copycats.

That's what people had started calling them.

Wannabes trying to insert themselves into something bigger—starting fights, spreading rumors, escalating things just to feel like they were part of it.

And it was working.

The town felt… different.

Unstable.

Like anything could tip it over.

Jack

He found her before anyone else could.

"You shouldn't have done that alone," Jack said, stepping in beside her, his presence immediately cutting through the noise.

Lily let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. "I had to."

"I know," he said softly.

His hand found hers—firm, grounding.

"They were tearing you apart," she said. "Someone had to say something."

Jack studied her face, something unreadable flickering behind his eyes.

"You didn't just say something," he replied. "You chose me."

The way he said it made her chest tighten.

"I didn't choose sides," she said quickly. "I chose the truth."

A faint smile touched his lips. "Of course you did."

But there was something else there too.

Something quieter. Satisfied.

Nowhere Else to Go

By evening, it was clear she couldn't stay at her place.

Someone had left a note on her door.

We know where you stand now.

That was it.

No name. No threat spelled out.

It didn't have to be.

Her hands shook as she showed Jack.

His expression didn't change—but the air around him did.

"You're not staying here," he said flatly.

"I'll be fine—"

"No." His voice was calm, but there was no room to argue. "You're coming with me."

She hesitated.

Not because she didn't trust him.

But because everything was happening so fast.

Her life—her normal life—was slipping away piece by piece.

And this… this felt like a point of no return.

Jack stepped closer, his voice lowering.

"Lily," he said, softer now. "You're not safe here."

That decided it. "…Okay."

His House

Jack's house felt different at night.

Quieter.

Closed off from the rest of the world in a way that was almost comforting.

Almost.

"You can take the room upstairs," he said. "You'll be safe here."

"You keep saying that," Lily murmured.

"Because it's true."

She turned to face him. "You'd really do anything to protect me?"

There was no hesitation.

"Yes."

The word landed heavy.

Not dramatic.

Not exaggerated.

Just certain.

Something in her chest eased.

"Good," she said quietly. "Because I don't have anyone else right now."

Jack's gaze softened at that—but there was an edge beneath it.

"You don't need anyone else," he replied.

The words lingered longer than they should have.

Fractures

That night, the group chat exploded.

Nick. Kevin. Marcus. Others.

No one agreed anymore.

Marcus:This is going too far.

Kevin:It already has. That's the point.

Nick:Everyone just needs to calm down—

Marcus:Tell that to the people getting hurt.

Then—

Marcus:Lily, you're making a mistake.

Her fingers hovered over the screen.

Jack's voice came from behind her.

"You don't have to answer that."

She looked back at him. "They're my friends."

"Are they acting like it?"

Silence.

The phone buzzed again.

Kevin:Things are moving faster now. People are picking sides.

Lily swallowed.

"They think I'm wrong," she said.

Jack stepped closer, his presence steady, unshaken.

"They're confused," he said. "There's a difference."

Another buzz.

Marcus:If you stay with him, don't expect things to go back to normal.

Lily stared at the message.

Then slowly… she locked her phone.

"I already know that," she said.

The Shift

Later, as the house settled into silence, Lily stood by the window, looking out at a town that no longer felt like hers.

Sirens echoed faintly in the distance.

Another incident.

Another escalation.

Behind her, Jack watched.

"You did the right thing," he said quietly.

She didn't turn around.

"I hope so."

"You did," he repeated. "And I'm not going to let anything happen to you. Not them. Not anyone."

There it was again.

That certainty.

That promise.

Lily nodded slowly, more to herself than to him.

"Okay."

Outside, somewhere in the dark, voices shouted.

Something crashed.

The town was breaking.

And inside the house, Lily stood alone at the window—

closer to Jack than ever before,

and farther from everyone else.
