Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — The Weight of a Name

Pol was already at the van when I got there Monday morning.

 

Not waiting — working. He was on his back in the gutter beside the front wheel

arch, one arm buried past the elbow in the undercarriage, the other braced flat

on the wet asphalt. I could hear the faint metallic complaint of something being

persuaded into alignment.

 

I stood at the corner and watched for a moment. He hadn't heard me. The bracket

rattle I'd been living with for three weeks stopped. Replaced by a single sharp

clank, then nothing.

 

He slid out, sat up, and saw me. He didn't flinch.

 

"Receipt," I said.

 

He pulled a folded scrap from his jacket pocket and held it out without standing.

Nine hundred even, itemized. The bracket, a strip of anti-rattle foam, a small

tube of thread-locking compound he'd apparently decided the job required on his

own initiative. I checked the math. It came out correct.

 

I gave him the hundred change and the remaining thousand from yesterday's

arrangement. He pocketed both without counting them. I noted that.

 

"Tuesday," I said. "Warehouse opens at seven. I want you there at six forty-five

so I can walk the route once before you run it alone."

 

He nodded, already standing, already brushing asphalt grit off his jacket.

 

"Anything I should know about the buyers?"

 

"Twelve regular stops. I'll write down the order and the names. Fetch — the man

who runs the northeastern coordination — he'll be at stop three. He'll know your

face, or he will after tomorrow."

 

"And if someone tries to renegotiate on the doorstep?"

 

It was a good question. Better than I expected from someone his age.

 

"Then you write down what they asked for and you tell them I'll follow up. You

don't renegotiate. You don't agree to anything. You smile, you leave, you call me."

 

He considered this. "What if they get difficult?"

 

"Then you still write it down, still call me, and still smile. The smile costs

you nothing and it makes them think they've won something. By the time they

realize they haven't, I've already figured out what they actually want."

 

He looked at me for a moment with the flat evaluating expression of someone

deciding whether to believe something. Then he nodded and left. I watched him

go. He walked like he was calculating something.

 

I got in the van. No rattle. I sat there for a second with the engine running

and registered the absence of the sound I'd been automatically accounting for

every morning. Small things compound.

The registration office for small commercial trade names was on the fourth floor

of a building that smelled like old carpet and municipal paper. I took a number.

I waited forty minutes in a plastic chair while a ceiling fan moved air that had

already been breathed by everyone else in the room.

 

ASHFORD MATERIALS COORDINATION.

 

I'd written it on the form at home, then stared at it for a while. Crossed out

the initials I'd absent-mindedly put beside it the night before. It wasn't

sentiment. It was precision. A trade name was a public document. Everything

attached to it would eventually be visible. I wanted the name to say exactly

what the business was and nothing else.

 

The clerk was efficient. She processed the registration in eleven minutes.

Fifteen thousand. She slid a receipt across the counter without looking up.

 

I took it and stepped out into the stairwell to test something I'd been

holding off on.

 

I opened my System window.

 

The registration fee sat in the EXPENDITURE column. I'd flagged it mentally as

a grey area — overhead cost, not income, but the kind of cost that only exists

because a legitimate enterprise exists. The System had opinions about what it

counted. I had learned to read those opinions carefully before assuming.

 

I submitted a query. Not a conversion — just a query, the same way I'd probed

the labor income rule three weeks ago.

 

The response came back in under a second.

I read it twice.

 

Not the same as converting the cost into SP. The System wouldn't give me

something for spending money — it never worked that way. But it would reduce

the conversion threshold on my next trade income event by up to forty percent,

proportional to legitimate enterprise overhead I'd logged. Fifteen thousand in

overhead against a conversion threshold of fifty thousand meant the next

conversion would cost me thirty-five thousand instead of fifty.

 

I stood in the stairwell and thought about that for a moment.

 

Then I thought about what it meant at scale. Warehouse leases. Business

registrations. Equipment. Every legitimate overhead cost the Compact incurred

was a compression on the conversion rate. The System wasn't penalizing me for

building infrastructure. It was — in its precise, non-negotiable way —

rewarding it.

 

I filed the receipt and went home to revise my models.

Tuesday morning, six forty-three. Pol was at the warehouse two minutes before

I arrived. He had a clipboard I hadn't given him. He'd made his own.

 

I walked the route with him once, pointing out the stops in order, the names,

the payment method at each. Fetch confirmed at stop three — still running the

northeastern coordination himself, two new communities added since the first

run. The extra household had a daughter who'd apparently spread the word. I

made a note.

 

At stop six, a woman named Aris opened her door, looked past me at Pol, and

said: "This one's younger than I expected for a delivery operation."

 

"He's reliable," I said. "Which is the part that matters."

 

She considered Pol for a moment. He held her gaze without shifting his weight.

She stepped aside and let us in.

 

That was the whole first run. Three hours. No renegotiations. No incidents.

At the end, Pol handed me the clipboard with every stop accounted for, payment

method confirmed, two minor notes in a handwriting that was smaller than I

expected — one about a broken step at stop four, one about Aris's preference

for Tuesday mornings over Saturdays for future reference.

 

I looked at the notes. I looked at him.

 

"Thursday," I said.

 

He didn't smile. He just nodded and left. Same walk. Still calculating something.

 

I drove back north alone and converted the pending trade income with the overhead

offset applied. The System window confirmed the threshold reduction. Net SP

generated: 0.244. Running balance: 1.392.

 

Second stat point now roughly two weeks out at current rate. Less, if Saturday's

coordination presentation went the way I thought it would.

I spent Wednesday and Thursday building the coordination structure I'd sketched

the night of the Gull meeting. The framework I was designing for the Grey Market

woman wasn't complicated in concept — the execution was the problem. The document

trail had to move through ASHFORD MATERIALS COORDINATION cleanly. Her name, her

operation, her source: none of it could appear in the transaction layer I'd be

presenting to buyers. At the same time, the buyers would need something. Quality

assurance. Supply continuity documentation. A face and a name that was answerable

if something went wrong.

 

That face and name was mine.

 

I tested the structure against three scenarios I thought most likely to fail: a

buyer demanding to inspect the source directly, a buyer defaulting on payment,

and a buyer attempting to circumvent the coordination layer and approach her

independently. For each scenario I wrote out the contractual language, the

enforcement mechanism, and the fallback position.

 

The third scenario was the one that kept me revising longest. If a buyer decided

my margin wasn't worth paying and tried to find her directly, I had limited hard

leverage — she was still a Grey Market vendor, not a formally contracted supplier.

Any agreement we had was informal. The only real protection I could offer her

was making myself more valuable as a middleman than any shortcut around me.

 

That meant the coordination layer had to do something she couldn't do alone. Not

just move paper. Actually solve problems.

 

What problems did she have? I'd watched her for two weeks before approaching her.

I'd seen the equipment manufacturer's scout leave with her card but no deal. I'd

seen buyers approach, inspect, and walk away — not because the cord wasn't good,

but because they couldn't verify it consistently, couldn't predict supply volume,

couldn't get documentation they could show their own clients or guilds.

 

She had an exceptional product with a provenance problem and a trust infrastructure

problem. I was, at this point, a man with a registered trade name, a growing

reputation for following through, and a System window that logged every transaction

permanently. I couldn't fix the provenance entirely. But I could make the trust

infrastructure irrelevant to the buyer's decision. I could stand between them

and the uncertainty and make it my problem to solve rather than theirs to evaluate.

 

I finished the structure Thursday evening. Eleven pages, which was nine more than

I'd intended, but every page was load-bearing.

 

I read it through once. Then I ate the flatbread that had been sitting on my

counter since that morning and looked at the ceiling for a while.

 

The name I kept not writing in the framework was her name. I didn't know it yet.

That was a gap I needed to close before Saturday.

Friday. Grey Market didn't run on Fridays. I went anyway.

 

Not to the underpass — that was the Tuesday and Saturday location. The Friday

informal gathering happened near the old postal depot on the edge of the ruins,

less organized, mostly regulars who needed to move something mid-week. I'd mapped

it in the first week but hadn't worked it yet. I went now because I'd noticed,

two Saturdays ago, that the fiber stall woman arrived at the market already tired.

The kind of tired that doesn't come from a long walk. She was working somewhere

before she set up.

 

I walked the depot area slowly. Found her at seven forty-three in the morning,

loading grey-green cord bundles onto a handcart from a storage unit on the

depot's east face. The unit wasn't hers — she was paying someone, by the look

of the conversation she was finishing as I rounded the corner. The storage owner

left. She turned back to the cart and saw me.

 

A pause. Not surprise — recognition. She'd clocked me at the Tuesday market.

She knew I was interested. She'd been waiting to find out what kind of interested.

 

"You're early," she said.

 

"I wanted to catch you before Saturday."

 

"Why?"

 

"Because what I'm going to propose on Saturday has your name in the paperwork.

I thought you should know that before I walked in."

 

She looked at me for a moment. A real look — the kind that was costing her

something. She'd been careful for a long time. I could see the shape of it.

 

"Maret," she said. "My name is Maret."

 

I filed it. Noted the slight pause before she said it, and the steadiness after.

She'd chosen to give it.

 

"Ren," I said.

 

She went back to loading the cart. I didn't offer to help. She didn't ask.

 

"Saturday," she said. "Come to the west end. I'll be set up by eight."

 

I left. The morning was grey and cold and the ruins were silver at the edges

where the vegetation had taken hold, and I walked back to the van thinking about

eleven pages of framework and how it all hinged on whether one woman believed

I was worth the risk of attaching her name to mine.

 

The System window was closed. I didn't need it for this.

 

Some things weren't about conversion rates.
