The comment was so unexpected and strange that I couldn't formulate a response. She sounded so blunt and the way she said it felt like it wasn't entirely a complement.
Unsettling and kind.
No one had ever put those words together when describing me.
I smiled. Considering she was someone who likely hadn't seen a serpent before… "Unsettling is fair."
She just stared.
"What… what do you think of Vore?" I asked, steering toward safer waters. "I am guessing you were just recently brought here? Do you miss your home?"
Maybe that might be a terrible question, because the moment I had uttered that question, her expression shuttered instantly. The warmth that had been building between us cooled by several degrees.
I had only just wanted to know more about her…
More questions burned, but I held it back.
"I'd rather not talk about it, please," she said quietly.
