Chapter 21 - expansion

ROOM 7

Chapter Twenty: The Expansion

---

The email came on a Monday.

Jay was at the common table, nursing her coffee, watching Keifer across the room. He was finally sleeping again—real sleep, the kind that left him looking less like a ghost and more like himself. The shadows under his eyes had faded. The tension in his shoulders had loosened. He was leaning against his headboard, book open, eyes half-closed, content.

She was watching him when her phone buzzed.

Dear Residents of Room 7,

Due to increased enrollment and demand for the Mariano-Watson International Dormitory experience, your room has been selected for expansion. Four (4) additional beds will be installed this week. Your new roommates will arrive on Friday.

We trust you will make them feel welcome.

Jay read the email three times. Then she read it out loud.

The room went silent.

Yuri was the first to break. "FOUR MORE PEOPLE?"

"Four more beds," Mica said slowly. "In this room."

"Where are they going to put them?" Calix asked.

Nobody had an answer.

---

Part One: The Installation

The construction crew arrived on Wednesday.

They moved furniture. Rearranged beds. Found space in corners that nobody knew existed. By the time they left, Room 7 looked like a different place. Twelve beds had become sixteen. The common area was smaller. The paths between beds were narrower. The bathroom schedule would need to be rewritten.

Care stared at the new configuration for a long time. Then she sat down with her color-coded markers and got to work.

Cole watched her. "You're going to need more colors."

"I have more colors."

"You have twelve colors. You need sixteen."

"I have sixteen colors."

"You've been hiding colors from me?"

"I've been strategically allocating resources."

"That's hiding."

"That's planning."

He leaned down. Kissed her forehead. "You're ridiculous."

"You like it."

"I don't not like it."

Lyra watched the new beds with different eyes. "They're going to need blankets. Pillows. Towels."

"We have extras," Mica said.

"We have four extras. We need eight."

Mica blinked. "We need eight?"

"We need eight. I counted."

Alex appeared beside Lyra. "I have extras. In my closet."

"You have extra blankets?"

"I have everything."

She looked at him. "Why do you have everything?"

He shrugged. "I like to be prepared."

Yuri snorted from across the room. "He likes to be prepared for Lyra."

"Yuri."

"I'm just saying."

"Don't."

"I'm not."

"Yuri."

He raised his hands. Walked away. Lyra's face was red. Alex's ears were red. Neither of them said anything.

Freya was documenting everything. The new beds. The new layout. The look on everyone's faces. Erdix was beside her, helping her organize.

"This is the best thing that's happened all month," she said.

"You say that every week."

"This week it's true."

"Every week is true with you."

"Because every week something happens."

She raised her camera. Captured Care hunched over her schedule. Lyra counting blankets. Alex pulling extras from his closet. Yuri pretending not to watch. Mica organizing. Calix helping. David already putting snacks on the new nightstands.

David looked up. "They're going to be hungry when they arrive. Moving is hard."

"David," Mica said.

"They'll need snacks."

"You're putting snacks on their beds?"

"They're welcome snacks. To make them feel welcome."

She shook her head. Smiled. "You're something else."

"I'm prepared."

"You're prepared."

"Same thing."

---

Part Two: The Arrival

Friday came too fast.

The whole room gathered by the door. Yuri was bouncing. Lyra was smoothing her hair. Alex was standing beside her, calm as always. Care was holding her new bathroom schedule like a shield. Cole was holding her hand.

Mica and Calix stood together, ready to help. Freya had her camera up. Erdix was beside her. David had snacks in his hands.

Jay stood by the window. Keifer was beside her.

"Four new people," she said.

"Four new people."

"In our room."

"In our room."

She looked at him. "Are you nervous?"

He looked at her. "Are you?"

She didn't answer.

The door opened.

---

The first one through was a boy.

He was small. Not small for his age—small for anyone. Dark hair. Dark eyes. A smile that took up his whole face. He looked like he'd been running. His shirt was untucked. His shoelaces were undone. His bag was half-open, clothes spilling out.

He stopped in the middle of the room. Looked around. His eyes went from face to face to face. Then they landed on Jay.

He walked straight to her. Stopped in front of her. Looked up.

"You look like my mother," he said.

The room went silent.

Jay blinked. "What?"

"My mother. You look like her. Same face. Same eyes. Same look like she's about to tell me I've done something wrong."

"I don't—"

"I'm Ci N." He stuck out his hand. "I'm eighteen. I finished high school when I was fourteen. College when I was sixteen. I'm here for my PhD. My brain works at one hundred sixty percent capacity. It's exhausting. Do you have food?"

Jay stared at his hand. Then at his face. Then at Keifer.

Keifer was trying not to laugh.

"I'm sorry," Jay said. "Your brain works at what?"

"One hundred sixty percent. It's a medical condition. Or a gift. Depends on the day. Do you have food?"

David stepped forward. Held out a bag of chips. Ci N took it. Opened it. Ate three chips in rapid succession.

"Thank you," he said. He looked at David. His face lit up. "You look like my grandfather."

David's eyebrows rose. "Your grandfather?"

"My grandfather. Same face. Same eyes. Same calm. Same snacks." Ci N pointed at the chips. "He always had snacks too. He said snacks make everything better. He was right."

David smiled. "Your grandfather sounds like a smart man."

"He was. He passed away last year." Ci N said it simply. No drama. Just a fact. "I miss him. You remind me of him."

The room went quiet again. David's face softened.

"I'm honored," David said.

Ci N nodded. Walked past him. Looked around the room again. "I'll be sleeping over there." He pointed at a bed near the window. "The light is best for reading. I read seven books a week. Sometimes eight. Do you have any other food?"

Mica stepped forward. "We have rice. And eggs. I can make you something."

Ci N looked at her. His face tilted. "You look like my grandmother. She makes the best rice. I would like that very much."

Mica's face went through several emotions. Calix put his hand on her back. Steady. Supportive.

"I'll make you rice," Mica said.

Ci N smiled. Followed her to the kitchen. Halfway there, he turned back.

"Oh," he said. "My things are in the hall. Someone should get them. There's a lot. I don't travel light. Books are heavy."

He disappeared into the kitchen.

The room stood in silence.

Yuri spoke first. "He called Jay his mother. David his grandfather. Mica his grandmother."

"His brain works at one hundred sixty percent," Lyra said.

"His brain works at one hundred sixty percent and he thinks Jay looks like his mother."

"And David looks like his grandfather."

"And Mica looks like his grandmother."

"He's going to call someone else his father," Yuri said. "Watch."

Everyone looked at Keifer.

Keifer held up his hands. "Don't."

"He's going to call you father," Yuri said.

"He's not."

"He's going to call you father and Jay mother and they're going to be parents."

"Yuri."

"The room is growing. The family is growing. Ci N is the new child."

Keifer grabbed a pillow. Threw it at Yuri. Yuri caught it.

"You have a catching problem," Keifer said.

"You have a throwing problem," Yuri said.

"I have a Yuri problem."

"The worst kind."

Alex was already at the door. "I'll get his things."

Lyra followed. "I'll help."

They walked out together. The room watched them go.

---

The second one through was a girl.

She walked in like she owned the place. Long hair. Sharp eyes. A smile that said she knew something you didn't. She stopped in the middle of the room, looked around, and nodded.

"This will do," she said.

"Who are you?" Yuri asked.

She looked at him. "Rakki. I'm here for Ci N."

Yuri blinked. "For Ci N?"

"We're together. He forgets things. He forgets to eat. He forgets to sleep. He forgets to tie his shoes." She pointed at the floor. Ci N's shoelaces were still undone. "I fix things."

She walked to Ci N's bed. Started unpacking his bag. Books. Notebooks. A small stuffed fox. She put the fox on his pillow. Smoothed the ears.

The room watched.

"You two are together?" Lyra asked from the doorway. She and Alex were carrying boxes.

"Together," Rakki said. "He's a genius. He's also a disaster. I'm the disaster manager."

She pulled a schedule from her bag. Taped it to the wall beside Ci N's bed. Eating times. Sleeping times. Study times. Shower times.

"Ci N made that," she said. "He likes schedules. He just forgets to follow them. I remind him."

Care walked over. Looked at the schedule. Her eyes lit up. "This is—"

"Color-coded," Rakki said. "Ci N has opinions about color-coding."

"So do I."

They looked at each other. A moment of understanding passed between them.

"You can help me update it," Rakki said. "For the new room configuration."

Care nodded. "I'd like that."

Cole watched from across the room. "I've lost her," he said.

"You never had her," Yuri said.

"I had her."

"You had her arguments."

"The arguments are mine."

"Then you still have her. She's arguing with someone else now."

Cole looked at Care and Rakki. Heads together. Markers out. New schedule taking shape.

"She's not arguing," he said. "She's collaborating."

Yuri patted his shoulder. "That's worse."

Cole didn't argue.

---

The third one through was a boy.

He was taller than Ci N. Broader. Older. His hair was messy. His shirt was wrinkled. His eyes were the same color as Ci N's.

He walked in, looked at Ci N's bed, and smiled.

"There he is," he said.

The room turned.

"Who are you?" Yuri asked.

"Felix." He pointed at Ci N. "I'm here for him."

"Another one?" Yuri looked at Rakki. "She's here for him too."

Felix looked at Rakki. Rakki looked at Felix. A long moment passed.

"You're the one who sends him food," Rakki said.

"You're the one who makes sure he sleeps," Felix said.

"He doesn't sleep without reminders."

"He doesn't eat without threats."

They stared at each other. Then, slowly, they both smiled.

"We should talk," Rakki said.

"We should," Felix agreed.

They walked to the kitchen. Found Ci N eating rice at the table. Sat down on either side of him. Started a conversation that sounded like negotiations.

Ci N looked between them. "Are you two fighting?"

"No," they said together.

"You sound like you're fighting."

"We're discussing."

"About what?"

They looked at each other. Back at Ci N.

"About who gets to sit next to you at dinner," Rakki said.

Ci N blinked. "Both of you can sit next to me. There are two sides."

They looked at each other again.

"That's acceptable," Felix said.

"Temporary," Rakki said.

"Temporary," Felix agreed.

Ci N went back to his rice. "I like them both," he said to Mica. "Can they stay?"

Mica looked at Calix. Calix looked at Mica.

"It's a dorm," Calix said. "Anyone can stay."

Ci N nodded. Went back to his rice.

---

The fourth one through was a girl.

She walked in quietly. No announcement. No fanfare. Just walked in, looked around, and smiled.

"Hey," she said.

Lyra's head snapped up. "Ash?"

Ash's smile widened. "Hey yourself."

Lyra ran. She crossed the room in seconds. Crashed into Ash like they hadn't seen each other in years.

"You're here," Lyra said. "You're actually here."

"I'm here."

"How are you here?"

"They added beds. I applied. I got in."

"Without telling me?"

"It's a surprise."

Lyra pulled back. Looked at her. "A surprise?"

Ash looked at Care. Care was already walking over. Her face was doing something she didn't let people see often.

"You didn't tell us," Care said.

"I wanted to see your faces."

Care reached them. Pulled Ash into a hug. Short. Quick. Like she didn't want anyone to see.

"You're an idiot," Care said.

"You missed me," Ash said.

"I missed your organizational skills."

"You missed me."

"I missed you."

Ash laughed. Care laughed. Lyra was already crying.

The room watched. Yuri wiped his eyes. "I'm not crying," he said.

"You're crying," Mica said.

"I'm not crying. My eyes are sweating."

"That's not a thing."

"It's my thing."

Alex was watching Lyra. She was holding Ash's hand. Crying. Laughing. Talking too fast. He watched her like he was seeing something new.

Ash looked over Lyra's shoulder. Caught Alex's eye.

"You must be Alex," she said.

He nodded. "You must be Ash."

"Lyra's told me everything about you."

"Lyra's told me everything about you."

Ash smiled. "Good things?"

"I don't know. She talks very fast."

Ash laughed. "She does."

She walked over. Shook his hand. Held it longer than necessary. Looked him in the eye.

"Take care of her," she said.

"I do."

"I know." She let go. Smiled. "That's why I like you."

She walked to Care. Started unpacking her bag. The room watched.

Jay hadn't moved from the window. Keifer was still beside her.

"Ash," she said.

"You know her?"

"Lyra's best friend. From before. Before the dorm. Before everything. She moved away three years ago."

"And now she's back."

"And now she's back."

Keifer looked at Ash. At the way Lyra was clinging to her arm. At the way Care was pretending not to hover. At the way Alex was watching, patient, waiting.

"Room's getting crowded," he said.

Jay looked at the new beds. At Ci N eating rice. At Rakki and Felix negotiating. At Ash unpacking. At Lyra laughing.

"Yeah," she said. "It is."

She wasn't frowning.

---

Part Three: The Integration

Dinner was chaos.

Mica and Calix cooked enough for an army. David brought snacks. Yuri tried to explain the house rules. Ci N corrected him three times.

"The bathroom schedule is suboptimal," Ci N said. "Care's system is good, but the time allocations don't account for individual variance."

Care looked up. "Individual variance?"

"Some people shower faster than others. Some people need more time in the morning. The schedule should be weighted."

"You want a weighted bathroom schedule?"

"It's more efficient."

Care stared at him. Then at Cole. "I like him."

Cole raised his eyebrows. "You like him?"

"He's logical."

"He's eighteen."

"Age doesn't matter."

"Care."

"Cole."

Ci N looked between them. "Are you two together?"

"Yes," Cole said.

"No," Care said at the same time.

Ci N blinked. "You're both wrong."

They stared at him.

"You're together," Ci N said. "You just haven't agreed on what it's called. That's inefficient. You should talk about it."

He walked away. Found Rakki. Sat down beside her.

Care and Cole stood in silence.

"He's eighteen," Cole said.

"He's eighteen," Care agreed.

"And he's right."

"He's right."

They looked at each other. Neither of them said anything else.

Across the room, Ash was meeting everyone. Mica. Calix. Yuri. Freya. Erdix. David. She stopped when she got to David.

"You're the one with the snacks," she said.

David smiled. "I'm David."

"Ash." She looked at his face. "You look like someone's grandfather."

"Ci N said the same thing."

"He's usually right about things. His brain works differently."

David nodded. "He told me."

"You don't mind? Being called someone's grandfather?"

David thought about it. "My own grandfather was a good man. Kind. Patient. Always had snacks." He looked at Ci N, who was now explaining something to Rakki with his hands. "If he sees that in me, I'm honored."

Ash studied him for a moment. Then she smiled. "You're going to fit in here."

David returned the smile. "I already do."

Ash moved on. Found Lyra. Sat down beside her. The conversation was too fast for anyone else to follow.

---

Part Four: The Night

The room was different.

Sixteen beds instead of twelve. New voices. New rhythms. New sounds. Ci N was already asleep, his small fox tucked under his arm. Rakki was beside him, reading. Felix was at the desk, writing. Ash was on her bed, looking at photos on her phone.

Lyra was beside her. Talking too fast. Catching up.

Alex sat on his bed, watching. Patient. Waiting.

Care was at the table, updating the bathroom schedule. Cole was beside her, not arguing. Just there.

Mica and Calix were in the kitchen, cleaning up. Yuri was helping. Freya was taking photos of the new configuration. Erdix was helping her organize. David was putting snacks on the new nightstands.

Jay lay in her bed. The shark was beside her. She could hear Keifer across the room. His breathing was even. Steady. He was sleeping.

She smiled. Closed her eyes.

"Mother."

She opened her eyes. Ci N was standing beside her bed.

"It's the middle of the night," she said.

"I know. I have a question."

"What?"

He looked at the shark on her pillow. "Why do you keep that?"

She looked at the shark. Blue. Soft. Stupid.

"Someone gave it to me," she said.

"The Watson?"

"Yes."

"Why do you keep it?"

She was quiet for a moment. "Because he gave it to me."

Ci N nodded slowly. "That's what I thought."

He looked across the room. At Keifer's bed. At Keifer's hand, reaching out in his sleep.

"He reaches for you," Ci N said. "When he sleeps. He reaches for you."

She didn't say anything.

"You reach for him too," Ci N said. "You keep the shark. You drink his coffee. You watch him when he's not looking. You're both reaching for each other. You just haven't caught yet."

She looked at him. "How do you know all that?"

He tilted his head. "My brain works at one hundred sixty percent. I see patterns. You and the Watson are a pattern. A long pattern. A slow pattern. But a pattern."

He walked back to his bed. Climbed in. Pulled the blanket up. His fox was under his arm.

"Goodnight, Mother," he said.

"I'm not your mother."

"You're something."

She watched him close his eyes. Watched him settle. Watched him sleep.

Across the room, Keifer turned. His hand reached out again. Searching.

She got up. Walked across the room. Stood beside his bed.

He opened his eyes. Looked at her.

"Can't sleep?" she asked.

"No."

She sat on the edge of his bed. He shifted. Made room. She lay down beside him.

His arms came around her. His face was in her hair. His breathing slowed.

"What did Ci N want?" he asked.

"He wanted to know about the shark."

"What did you tell him?"

She was quiet for a moment. "I told him you gave it to me."

He pulled her closer. "Anything else?"

She thought about what Ci N had said. About patterns. About reaching. About catching.

"No," she said. "That's all."

He kissed her hair. His breathing evened out. He was almost asleep.

"Jay."

"Yeah."

"I'm glad they're here."

She looked at the room. At the new beds. The new faces. The new rhythms. Ci N sleeping with his fox. Rakki watching him. Felix writing. Ash on her phone. Lyra beside her. Alex watching.

David was still awake. He was sitting on his bed, looking at the new nightstands. He'd put snacks on each one. Small bags of chips. Granola bars. A water bottle. He'd labeled them with names he'd learned in one day.

Ci N. Rakki. Felix. Ash.

He caught Jay looking. Smiled.

"They'll be hungry when they wake up," he said quietly. "Moving is hard."

She smiled back. "You're something else, David."

He settled into his bed. "I'm prepared."

She closed her eyes. Keifer's arms were around her. His breathing was slow. His heartbeat was steady.

"Yeah," she said. "Me too."

She slept. He held her.
