Chapter 2 - Chapter Two

Whispers and First Impressions

Aria's POV

The morning air inside Ravenwood Academy smelled faintly of polished wood and fresh paper. Everything about the place looked expensive from the chandeliers in the hallway to the marble floors that gleamed like mirrors.

I adjusted my uniform blazer and took a slow breath before pushing open the classroom door. The room was already half full, buzzing with chatter and laughter.

"Aria! Over here!"

I turned and saw the familiar face from yesterday, the cheerful girl who'd shown me around the campus. She waved her hand excitedly, her curls bouncing.

I walked over, a small smile tugging at my lips. " Lila,"I greeted softly.

She grinned. "I saved you a seat! You'll thank me later, front rows fill fast. And the teacher hates latecomers."

I slid into the chair beside her, dropping my notebook on the desk. Hailey leaned closer, whispering, "Everyone's already talking about the new scholarship student."

I blinked. "Why?"

"Everyone is actually curious about you."

Before I could say something , the classroom door opened. A tall woman with perfect posture and a clipboard entered. Her heels clicked sharply as she walked toward the front.

"Good morning, class," she said smoothly. "We have a new scholarship student joining us this semester. I expect you to make her feel welcome."

Her gaze swept across the room and landed on me. "Miss Bennett, would you like to introduce yourself?"

I rose slowly, smoothing my skirt. My heartbeat stayed steady, my face unreadable.

"Aria Bennett," I said clearly, my accent soft but crisp. "From Saint Petersburg."

The room fell silent for a beat. Then came the whispers quiet, curious ones. I caught pieces of them. She's from Russia? She doesn't look nervous at all.

The teacher nodded approvingly. "Welcome to Ravenwood Academy, Miss Bennett."

I sat back down, feeling Lila nudge me with a grin. "You said that like you own the place."

"Do I?" I murmured.

She laughed under her breath. "You'll survive here just fine."

Halfway through the lesson, the classroom door creaked open again. A tall boy walked in messy dark hair, sharp jawline, and a confidence that drew attention without effort.

"Late again, Mr. Knight," the teacher sighed, though not nearly as annoyed as she should have been.

"I know," he said smoothly, flashing a practiced smile. "Won't happen again."

He looked around the room, scanning for a seat and then his gaze landed on the empty one beside me.

Lila stiffened beside me. "Oh my God," she whispered. "You're about to sit next to Liam Knight."

I didn't react. Not outwardly, at least.

He walked over and slid into the chair beside me. The faint scent of his cologne lingered clean, expensive. I kept my eyes on my notebook, pretending to focus, but I could feel it that gaze. Persistent.

He was staring.

I tried to ignore it, flipping a page, taking notes I wasn't really reading. The longer it went on, the more aware I became of it.

Finally, I raised my head, my eyes meeting his.

He smiled slow, confident, and just a little too self-assured.

I frowned, unimpressed, then turned my face away, annoyance prickling beneath my calm.

Lila bit back a giggle beside me, whispering, "Oh, he's not used to that reaction."

Good.

The rest of the class passed slowly. I didn't look his way again, though I could still feel his attention now and then. When the bell finally rang, I gathered my books, stood up, and walked out without a word.

Behind me, I heard his low chuckle quiet but certain.

Let him laugh.

I wasn't here to entertain him.

I pushed my notebook into my bag, ignoring the faint trace of his cologne in the air. By the time I stepped out of the classroom, Lila was already waiting by the door, waving her hand enthusiastically.

"There you are!" she said, looping her arm through mine like we'd known each other for years. "C'mon, I'll show you around before you return to the dorm"

The hallways of Ravenwood Academy were alive students chatting, phones out, some taking pictures near the glass windows that overlooked the courtyard. Everything felt too polished, too rehearsed.

"Is it always this loud?" I asked.

She laughed. "You get used to it. Half of them are showing off their new cars or who they're dating. It's a whole show here."

As we rounded a corner, two voices echoed down the hall one male, one female, bickering but in perfect sync.

"I told you she was the one who cried in the cafeteria last semester!" the girl said dramatically.

"Oh please, she didn't cry, she stormed out," the guy replied, eyes rolling.

They both froze when they spotted Lila. "Lila Brooks!" the girl squealed. "You're alive!"

Lila grinned. "Barely. Aria, meet the Carter twins Lance and Lena. They're impossible to avoid but… harmless. Mostly."

"Hey!" Lance said, clutching his chest in mock offense. "We're delightful."

"Infamous, more like," Lila shot back.

Lena leaned in closer to me, eyes sparkling behind her thick lashes. "So, you're the new girl! I was wondering when we'd finally meet you. Everyone's been whispering."

My brows furrowed slightly. "Whispering about what?"

"Oh, nothing bad," Lance said, shrugging. "It's just rare for someone new to join mid-year. Ravenwood's… very particular about its students."

"Especially scholarship ones," Lena added, not unkindly, just bluntly.

Lila nudged her. "Behave."

But before the twins could say something else, their expressions suddenly lit up like gossip had just fallen from the heavens.

"Speaking of Ravenwood drama," Lance said with a smirk, "did you hear about Aubrey Hale?"

Lila sighed. "Please don't start."

Lena ignored her. "She's this really sweet girl literally too nice for this place. But last semester, she dated one of the guys from The Circle."

I tilted my head. "The Circle?"

"The Royals ," Lance explained, leaning against the wall. "Liam Knight and his friends Ethan, Noah, Caleb. They basically run this place. Good looks, family money, charm, arrogance they've got the full set."

Lena smirked. "And Ethan? Total heartbreaker. He dated Aubrey for months, then cheated on her with Venessa, the so-called queen of this school."

"Venessa is the definition of trouble," Lance added with a theatrical sigh. "Fake smiles, real claws. And rumor has it, she still hasn't gotten over Liam."

Lena rolled her eyes. "Still tries to flirt with him every chance she gets. Pathetic, honestly."

Their twin commentary was oddly entertaining like watching a perfectly timed duet of chaos.

"So yeah," Lance said finally, pushing off the wall. "If you see Venessa, just… walk the other way. Unless you're into drama."

"I'm not," I said simply.

Lila smiled. "Then you'll survive Ravenwood."

The twins waved dramatically as we walked past. Their laughter followed us down the corridor.

"They're ridiculous," Lila said, shaking her head.

"Maybe," I said softly, "but they make things interesting."

Lila chuckled. "You'll like Aubrey, though. She's nothing like Venessa."

I nodded, though part of me already wondered what kind of place I'd just stepped into. A world where alliances were currency and rumors traveled faster than the truth.

And somewhere in all that noise, I had a feeling my quiet life was about to get… complicated.
