Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 — When It Takes Hold

Ren didn't get up.

For a moment—

No one moved.

The shadow lingered above him, its shape shifting slowly, like something deciding what to do next.

"Ren…" Kaito's voice broke.

Haruto stepped forward carefully.

"Don't rush in."

But it was already too late for caution.

Ren's body twitched.

Once.

Then again.

Aoi felt it instantly.

The connection—

Not from the ground this time.

From him.

The Wrong Stillness

"…Something's wrong," she whispered.

Haruto didn't take his eyes off Ren.

"I know."

The shadow lowered slightly.

Closer.

Almost merging with him.

Kaito clenched his fists.

"…Get away from him…"

But the thing didn't respond.

Because it wasn't listening anymore.

The First Sign

Ren's hand moved.

Slowly.

Unnaturally.

Not like someone regaining consciousness.

Like something else was testing control.

Aoi stepped forward without thinking.

"Aoi—stop!" Haruto warned.

But she didn't stop.

Because she understood something now.

This wasn't just an attack.

It was a transfer.

Possession

Ren's eyes opened.

But they weren't right.

Empty.

Focused—

But not on them.

"…Found…" he whispered.

Kaito froze.

"That's not him…"

Ren's body pushed itself up.

Stiff.

Unbalanced.

Controlled.

The Fear Becomes Real

Haruto's voice lowered.

"…It's using him."

Aoi's chest tightened.

"…No…"

Because if that was true—

Then this wasn't just about survival anymore.

It was about losing each other.

The Attack Turns

Ren moved.

Fast.

Faster than he ever should have been able to.

He lunged—

Not at Aoi.

At Haruto.

Impact

Haruto barely reacted in time.

He blocked, but the force pushed him back several steps.

"Ren! Stop!" he shouted.

No response.

Only movement.

Controlled.

Precise.

The Realization

Kaito's voice shook.

"…He's fighting us…"

Haruto steadied himself.

"…No."

His eyes hardened.

"…Something is fighting through him."

Aoi Steps In

Aoi moved again.

This time—

Deliberately.

She stepped between them.

"Aoi, move!" Haruto snapped.

But she didn't.

She looked directly at Ren.

No—

At whatever was inside him.

"…Let him go."

The words came out steady.

Clear.

The Response

Ren's body froze.

Not fully—

But enough.

His head tilted slightly.

As if listening.

The Connection Deepens

Aoi felt it again.

Stronger than before.

That link.

That space between worlds.

"…You're not him," she said softly.

The air trembled.

Ren's hand twitched violently.

"…Give… back…" she whispered.

Resistance

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

Ren screamed.

A raw, broken sound.

His body jerked violently, as if something inside him was being pulled in two directions.

Kaito stepped back in shock.

"…What's happening to him?!"

Aoi's Control

Aoi raised her hand again.

The petals appeared—

But this time—

They didn't scatter.

They gathered.

Forming around Ren.

Holding him in place.

Unstable—

But stronger than before.

The Clash Within

Ren dropped to his knees.

His hands clenched against his head.

"…Stop…!" he gasped.

That was his voice.

His real voice.

Haruto's eyes widened slightly.

"…He's still in there."

The Breaking Point

Aoi stepped closer.

Each step heavier than the last.

"…You don't belong here," she said.

Her voice shook—

But didn't break.

The Push

The petals tightened.

The air shifted violently.

And then—

The shadow tore away.

Not cleanly.

Not fully.

But enough.

A dark mass was forced out of Ren's body—

Twisting.

Resisting.

Aftermath of the Clash

Ren collapsed instantly.

Unconscious.

But breathing.

Normal.

Kaito rushed to him.

"…Ren… hey… wake up…"

No response.

But he was alive.

Aoi's Limit

The petals shattered.

Gone.

Aoi stumbled backward.

Her strength vanished instantly.

Haruto caught her before she hit the ground.

"…You did it," he said quietly.

But she shook her head weakly.

"…No…"

Her voice was barely there.

"…It's still here…"

Final Scene

The shadow didn't disappear.

It lingered nearby.

Weaker.

But watching.

Learning.

Waiting.

Haruto looked toward it.

His expression darkened.

"…Next time…"

He didn't finish.

Because he already knew.

It wouldn't be this easy again.
