Luckily, the emergency stairwell was dark, so Silas Thorne couldn't see Joyce Monroe's flushed face. She was trying to put some distance between them when she heard him say, "Don't move. He's still out there."
From Joyce Monroe's position, she couldn't see the hallway outside at all.
But Silas Thorne, from where he was standing, could see a little through the crack in the door.
Their position was far too intimate and ambiguous. Joyce Monroe bit her lip and, fishing for a new topic, asked, "Thorne, what are you doing here?"
"I noticed you forgot your car keys, so I came to pick you up."
"You're pretty thoughtful."
"You're just now realizing that?"
Joyce Monroe bit her lip. 'I've known since I was eighteen.'
Silas Thorne released the hand he had around her waist. In the dim light of the stairwell, he bent down, picked up the wooden box from the floor, and then smoothly took her hand. "Let's go."
"Where are we going?" Joyce Monroe asked doubtfully.
"Home, of course."
