Annelise Valentine froze for a second. A wave of utter absurdity washed over her, making her laugh in fury.
"You want me," she repeated, as if to make sure she'd heard correctly, "to kneel and apologize to her?"
"Was I not clear enough?"
That apology she'd just given had been the biggest concession she could possibly make, a true test of her self-control! In her twenty-odd years, it was arguably the most humble thing she had ever said to anyone who wasn't immediate family!
'And Jett Westgate... he still wasn't satisfied?'
'He actually thought that wasn't enough?!'
'He wanted her to... kneel?!'
She took a step closer, her footing unsteady from the alcohol. Pointing at Stella Sterling, she challenged, "Her? Stella Sterling? Is she even worthy?!"
Jett Westgate gently wrapped an arm around Stella Sterling's shoulders in a gesture brimming with possessiveness and protectiveness.
"She's my person. So why isn't she worthy?"
