"We're almost there..."
He could have left the person on his back in the cave. He could have gone out to find help and then returned for her. But he couldn't bring himself to do it. He couldn't bear the thought of leaving her alone in there. In these desolate, overgrown mountains, there was no telling what kind of venomous snakes or wild beasts might be lurking.
'He knew his choice wasn't the most rational one.'
'But he just couldn't bring himself to leave her here all alone...'
Finally, he was getting closer. The mouth of the cave was just ahead.
He was almost there. His hand was numb, and he felt like he'd bled dry.
'But I can't give up. I have to get her out. I have to get her to a hospital immediately!'
'How deep is the gash on my hand? Deep enough, perhaps, to render it completely useless.'
