Evelyn Grant had anticipated this, but a sudden pang of pain still struck her chest. A stinging sensation she couldn't suppress welled up in her eyes.
She took a long, deep breath. When Preston Keaton returned, it was as if nothing had happened.
Preston Keaton's gaze fixed on her for a few seconds before he beckoned. "Come here."
Evelyn Grant obediently melted into his arms. Before she could speak, he tipped her chin up. Their eyes met. His were as deep as the sea, giving off an almost sacred, untouchable air.
"You're not happy," he stated softly. "What happened?"
'He could always see through people so easily.'
Evelyn Grant avoided his gaze and gave a vague reply. "I ran into a former colleague. I don't like her. She flaunted her life in my face for a bit, then left."
Preston Keaton asked patiently, "Flaunted what?"
