Finally, Aether's turn approached.
When his name was called, the hall seemed to hold its breath. Aether rose from his seat and walked slowly toward the Awakening Stone. With every step, a phantom memory from his previous life resurfaced. He remembered a time just like this—the cold stone, the expectant crowd, and the crushing silence that followed when he had touched it and nothing happened. In his previous life, he had failed. He had endured the cruel whispers and the pitying glances of those who saw him as "empty."
Anyway, he thought, his gaze hardening as he stood before the artifact, I didn't awaken in my previous life. Whether I awaken now or not doesn't matter. I've already faced the worst this situation can offer.
Steeling himself, Aether reached out. As his fingers brushed the jagged surface, a familiar surge of white energy erupted. But this time, it didn't just wash over him.
Beneath his tunic, the hidden rune on his chest began to glow with a fierce, rhythmic pulse. Like a starving beast, the rune began to suck the white energy inward, drawing it away from the stone and deep into Aether's body.
As the energy entered the rune, it was refined and split. Two distinct streams of white light began to circulate through his nervous system:
One stream flowed downward toward his dantian to forge a powerful Mana Core.
The other surged upward, wrapping around his heart to manifest a legendary Mana Heart.
The two sources of power pulsed in perfect synchronicity, connecting back to the glowing rune on his chest. As the energy saturated his physical form, the light became blinding. Suddenly, Aether's consciousness was yanked away from the grand hall, pulled into a void beyond time and space.
************
In another world far away from aether's world, inside a room draped in eternal shadow, a pair of eyes snapped open. The gaze was ancient, piercing through the veil of dimensions to lock onto Aether's soul.
A whisper, cold and raspy, drifted through the dark:
"The Fate Wielder has returned."
The eyes closed as quickly as they had opened, and the room fell back into a deathly, absolute silence.
***********
As Aether regained a fractured sort of consciousness, his eyes snapped open—but he was no longer in the grand hall. He existed now in an ethereal form, a silent observer drifting through a nightmare.
Before him, the sky was choked with smoke. He saw his father, bloodied but unyielding, fighting fiercely against a monstrous beast of the forest. As Aether turned, his heart sank; a massive Beast Tide was crashing against the kingdom's walls. The twelve duke families were on the front lines, desperately trying to hold back the surge of claws and fangs.
"What... what is happening?" Aether tried to scream, but no sound left his spectral throat.
Just then, a streak of glowing light, sharp and malicious, pierced through the chaos and struck his father's body. His father, using the last of his remaining strength to slay the beast before him, finally collapsed, falling limp onto the scorched ground.
Through the settling dust, a figure emerged from the darkness. As the man stepped into the light, Aether's ethereal eyes turned bloodshot with a primal, burning rage.
He knew that face.
It was a face etched into his soul using an artifact from his previous life—one of the very people who had orchestrated the destruction of his kingdom. Before he could strike out, the vision began to blur and tear at the edges. The scent of blood and smoke vanished, replaced by the cool, stagnant air of the palace.
With a violent gasp, Aether's consciousness was slammed back into his body. He was standing in the Awakening Hall, his hand still pressed against the stone, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
The room was silent, every eye fixed on the boy who had just seen the end of the world.
