Chapter 2 - 3

The garden didn't bloom overnight, but the dirt under Elias's fingernails felt like a new kind of skin. For the first time in years, his morning coffee wasn't just a bitter necessity; it was a companion to the sunrise.

One Tuesday, while Elias was kneeling by the hydrangeas, a shadow fell over the mulch. He looked up to see a neighbor holding a stray envelope.

"This was in my box by mistake," she said, her voice bright but cautious. "You're Mr. Thorne, right?"

Elias stood, wiping his palms on his knees. "I am. Thank you."

"I'm Sarah. I moved in across the street three months ago." She gestured toward the porch. "I noticed the door has been open lately. I thought... well, I thought I'd finally come say hello."

She didn't stay long, but she left a small gap in the wall Elias had built around himself. That evening, the house felt different. The "cracked door" was no longer just a physical act; it was an invitation.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the cardinal returned to the feeder. Elias watched it, realizing that the bird wasn't there to take anything from him. It was simply there, existing in the same space, brave and steady. Elias sat at his old desk, cleared away a thick layer of dust, and picked up a pen. He didn't write a memoir of his sadness. Instead, he wrote a single sentence at the top of a blank page:

The earth is cold, but it is not empty.
