The air tightened around them. Oka's expression hardened, the earlier amusement draining away, replaced by something colder, sharper. "You've changed," he said quietly. "But not enough." He moved faster than before. A killing strike.
Jin Mulan didn't retreat. For a split second, the old hesitation flickered then vanished. Her breathing slowed. Her focus narrowed. Again, Luo He's voice echoed in her mind. Don't resist it. Let it control you.
Oka's attack closed in and something inside her answered. Heat. Not around her. Within her. A sudden surge rushed through her veins, sharp and burning. It wasn't pain it was power forcing its way to the surface.
Her eyes sharpened. She stepped forward. A burst of flame ignited from her movement wild at first, then snapping into shape. Oka's strike met it and stopped. Fire coiled around her arm like a living force, blazing brighter with each heartbeat. "Fire?" Oka muttered, his eyes narrowing.
Jin Mulan didn't respond. The flames grew steadier. Controlled. For the first time. She wasn't chasing her element. She was holding it. Oka pulled back slightly, reassessing. "Newly awakened," he said. "Unstable." A faint smirk returned. "I'll crush it before it matures."
He lunged again.
Jin Mulan moved to meet him. This time, she didn't just react she led. Her footwork sharpened. Her timing aligned. The fire followed her will not perfectly, but enough.
Their clash rang out again steel against flame. Force against force. Oka pushed harder, his strength pressing down. "You're still lacking," he growled. Jin Mulan's jaw tightened. The pressure was real. The gap still there. But she didn't break. Instead, she stepped closer. Oka's eyes widened slightly. Too close.
Her hand shot forward. Flames surged with it a direct strike. Oka tried to block too late. The fire exploded on impact. A concentrated burst, not wide but deep. It broke through. His body staggered back.
For the first time he lost control. Jin Mulan didn't pause. She followed.
One step. Then another. Each movement sharper.
Each flame stronger. Oka tried to recover but the rhythm was gone. She had taken it. "Impossible" he started. She cut him off. A final step forward her flames condensed, focused and struck.
Silence. Oka froze. For a brief moment nothing moved. Then he fell.
The flames faded slowly from Jin Mulan's hand. The air cooled. Her breathing steadied. She looked down at him.
No hesitation. No doubt. Only certainty.
Behind her, Luo He approached.
Jin Mulan didn't turn immediately. "It's fire," she said quietly. "I can see that." he said.
A brief pause.
"You didn't hold back," he added.
Now she turned. "You told me not to."
Luo He's lips curved slightly. "And you finally trusted me enough to listen."
He glanced at Oka's body once, then back at her.
"Your element has responded." Jin Mulan looked at her hand. A faint warmth still lingered. "It's not stable yet." "No," Luo He agreed. "But it's yours now."
Silence settled between them.
Then a small shift. Jin Mulan straightened slightly. "Next time," she said, her voice steadier, "I'll control it better." Luo He chuckled softly. "There will surely be a next time." Behind them, the road stretched forward.
And for the first time, Jin Mulan walked it not as someone chasing power but as someone who had finally begun to claim it.
They returned to where the blacksmith had been left waiting. He stood up the moment he saw them approach, tension clear in his posture. His eyes immediately searched behind them.
"Where is he?" he asked.
Luo He didn't slow down. "Your problem is gone," he said calmly. "Your friend is dead." The words hit like a hammer.
The blacksmith froze. "Dead?" He took a step forward, disbelief flickering across his face. "You're certain?"
Jin Mulan stood quietly beside Luo He, her expression steady but the faint heat still lingering around her made it clear who had done it. Luo He glanced at her briefly, then back at the blacksmith. "Completely." Silence.
Then the blacksmith's fists clenched not in anger, but in release. "Father…" he muttered under his breath. The weight he had been carrying for so long finally cracked.
He dropped to one knee. This time not out of fear. But respect. "I have nothing left tying me down," he said. "If you're willing to teach… I will follow you, Master." Luo He studied him for a moment. Then nodded. "Fine." He stepped forward.
"Out of the two disciples I've taken so far," he said calmly, "both have already awakened their elements." A brief glance at Jin Mulan. "I won't fail you," he continued. "But only if you don't fail yourself." The blacksmith lowered his head. "I understand, Master."
"Then make it official." Luo He's tone sharpened slightly. "Repeat after me."
The blacksmith straightened, his voice firm now.
"I will follow my master."
"I will obey my master."
"I will give all to become stronger."
"I will give everything to become wiser."
"I will not turn back."
"I will not hold back."
Luo He nodded once. "From today onward," he said, "you are my third disciple." The blacksmith bowed deeply. "Understood, Master." With that, they turned back toward the road.
The journey ended at the Jin residence.
Jin Mulan frowned the moment she recognized it. "Why are we here?"
The carriage slowed. "This is my home," Luo He said simply. "Now that our daughter has been legitimised, we don't have any obligations left in the capital."
She looked at him. "I can go in alone."
Luo He stepped down from the carriage without answering. Jin Mulan followed immediately. Behind them, Su Kim carefully stepped down, holding little Lin in her arms. The child stirred slightly, unaware of everything that had happened.
For a moment, it almost felt like a normal family returning home. Luo He glanced at Jin Mulan. "You'll explain everything," he said simply. She frowned slightly. "Everything?" "Yes. Everything you want to say." His tone was calm but firm. Jin Mulan looked toward the gates of her old home.
A place that once defined her. Now it felt different. "Fine," she said quietly. Luo He gave a small nod. Then, without another word, he walked forward. And this time
Jin Mulan followed not as someone returning but as someone who had already changed.
The return of Luo He did not go unnoticed. Long before the convoy reached the inner gates of the Jin estate, word had already spread.
Servants whispered. Guards stood straighter. Messengers ran ahead with hurried breaths. By the time the gates opened. Both the Jin family and what remained of the Xu family were waiting.
The courtyard filled quickly.
Members of the Jin family gathered in layered formation. At the center stood Jin Quan, arms folded, his sharp gaze fixed on the approaching convoy.
Beside him, Jin Su stood with her usual rigid posture, though her eyes flickered more than usual. She wasn't just observing. She was measuring. The gates opened fully. The convoy entered.
And with it change.
At the front rode one thousand Flame elite soldiers, calm as ever, their presence steady, unshaken by the weight of attention. Behind them followed the carriages. The moment Luo He and Jin Mulan stepped into view. The air shifted.
Whispers broke. "That's him… the young master…" "He's alive… and stronger…"
Some stepped back instinctively.
Others straightened, forcing composure.
Luo He and Jin Mulan walked into the mansion. Without slowing, Luo He said quietly, "Explain." Then he turned away.
Taking Su Kim and the child with him.
Su Kim looked slightly startled but followed.
Jin Mulan remained behind. Her face grew pale. What will she do with him…?
Nothing good came to mind. She new she had made him loose control once and she is not sure whether it could happen again.
Luo He entered his chambers. He let Su Kim place the baby gently into the cradle. The child shifted slightly, then settled again, wrapped in silk. The room grew quiet. Luo He turned toward Su Kim.
Then, without hesitation, he pulled her closer and guided her toward the bed.
"So," he said calmly, studying her, "how are you feeling?" Su Kim's red eyes narrowed slightly. "I am not sure whether it's a son yet," he continued. "If so I've kept my promise."
A pause.
"And I still remember your dream." She didn't speak. "To give the technology of the Flame Kingdom to the public," he said. He sat down slowly. "Once I become king I will." Not rushed. Not dramatic. Certain.
"Not just opening gates once," he continued. "I'll spread advancements. Public transport. Better medicine. Things that actually change how people live."
Su Kim watched him closely now.
"I'll make sure they're available," he finished. Silence. Then he added,
"I spoke with Jin Mulan." That made her expression shift slightly. "Your child cannot be legitimized," he said plainly.
"But I can make him mine." Another pause. "And give him territory to govern if he proves ambitious and loyal." Now Su Kim finally spoke.
"You've already decided everything."
Luo He's gaze didn't change. "I always do." The cradle creaked softly as the child moved in sleep. Outside, the Jin estate remained tense. Inside plans continued to form. Because for Luo He
nothing ended. Everything simply moved forward.
