Chapter 119 - Chapter 119

After hours of discussion, planning and carrying the weight of future wars on their shoulders the tension within the room finally began to fade.

The rain outside had softened into a quiet rhythm against the stone courtyard and the oil lamps burned lower now their golden light flickering gently across the chamber walls.

For the first time that night nobody spoke about armies. Or rebellion. Or politics.

The exhaustion finally caught up to them.

Jin Quan leaned back heavily in his chair with a long breath while Jin Su who had remained composed for hours slowly relaxed beside him.

The sharpness in her eyes softened little by little now that the responsibilities had been divided and understood. Without thinking much about it she leaned sideways into her husband's arms.

Jin Quan immediately wrapped an arm around her naturally steady and familiar as though the years between them had built that instinct into muscle memory itself.

Luo He quietly looked away with a faint amused smile. Despite all the chaos surrounding them lately seeing the two together somehow made the room feel calmer.

Jin Su however seemed to be in an unusually good mood after her evolution.

Perhaps too good.

She suddenly pushed Jin Quan backward onto the edge of the bed behind them with surprising force causing him to let out a startled sound.

"From now on," she declared confidently looking down at him with clear satisfaction. "I'll be the one on top."

Jin Quan blinked once in surprise before bursting into helpless laughter.

"You've become terrifying after gaining power." He said. "That sounds like a compliment." Jin Su gave him a deep kiss. It was meant to be.

Even Luo He laughed quietly at the sight.

The atmosphere that had been heavy with strategy and danger only moments ago now felt strangely warm.

Jin Quan clearly had no intention of resisting his wife's newfound confidence either. If anything he looked rather entertained by it.

Seeing that the two no longer needed an audience Luo He calmly stood up and walked toward the door. As he stepped outside he closed the chamber door quietly behind him.

Almost immediately afterward muffled laughter and the sound of the couple continuing their long-delayed affection reached faintly through the mansion walls.

After Jin Su's evolution the two had barely been able to properly rest together for days. Now that the danger of the transformation had passed it was obvious neither intended to waste the night sleeping early.

Luo He shook his head lightly with amusement before walking farther down the corridor toward the adjoining chamber. Toward his own wife.

A faint warmth appeared in his expression as he approached the familiar door. Because if there was one thing he knew with certainty Jin Mulan was absolutely still awake waiting for him.

Luo He quietly pushed open the adjoining door and stepped into his chamber. The atmosphere inside was far calmer compared to the tension behind the previous door.

Warm lantern light illuminated the room softly casting golden reflections across polished wood and silk curtains that shifted gently from the cool night breeze slipping through the slightly opened window.

Jin Mulan sat before the bronze mirror near the vanity table slowly combing through her long crimson hair in steady strokes. The rich red strands shimmered beautifully beneath the lantern light.

Flowing down her neck and back like liquid silk. She did not immediately turn around when Luo He entered. But the faint curve at the corner of her lips revealed she already knew it was him.

Luo He said nothing at first. He simply sat down nearby in one of the carved wooden chairs loosening his outer robe slightly as though finally allowing himself to relax after the endless discussions.

The quiet domestic atmosphere felt strangely comforting. Near the inner cot Bing sat carefully beside the child gently rocking her while humming softly under her breath.

Luo He's gaze naturally softened the moment he looked toward his daughter.

The little girl blinked sleepily at him from within the blankets tiny fingers rubbing at her eyes before she suddenly opened her mouth in a huge adorable yawn.

Luo He chuckled quietly. "My fierce little warrior seems defeated by sleep." Lue He said. The child responded by lazily sucking on one of her tiny fingers before immediately losing the battle against exhaustion entirely.

Within moments her breathing became slow and peaceful. Bing smiled faintly before carefully lifting the sleeping child into her arms. "I'll put her in the night cot," she whispered softly. Luo He nodded.

The attached sleeping room prepared for the child was connected directly beside the couple's chamber so they could remain close during the night.

Once Bing quietly disappeared into the adjoining room with the sleeping child the chamber became much quieter. Only the soft brushing sound of Jin Mulan's comb moving through her hair remained.

Then finally she stood. Without a word, Jin Mulan walked toward him slowly before smoothly settling herself onto Luo He's lap as though it was the most natural thing in the world.

She faced him directly folding one leg to either side of his body against the chair.

The movement caused her long crimson hair to sway outward beautifully behind her like a flowing scarlet fan before cascading back down over her shoulders and waist.

Luo He instinctively rested his hands against her hips to steady her. For a moment neither spoke. Jin Mulan simply looked at him quietly from close enough for him to feel the warmth of her breath.

The fierce woman who terrified soldiers and burned through battlefields with crimson flames now sat silently in his lap after combing her hair for the night like a wife waiting for her husband to finally return home.

And strangely that sight affected Luo He far more deeply than any battlefield ever had. They kept eye contact for some time then she leaned in talking him in to a quiet kiss.

As usual, Luo He spoke to her in that infuriatingly teasing tone that somehow always managed to make Jin Mulan both annoyed and weak at the same time.

Jin Mulan narrowed her eyes slightly at him though the faint redness spreading across her cheeks ruined any attempt at looking truly threatening.

Luo He pulled her closer against his chest one arm wrapped firmly around her waist while the other rested comfortably along her back in a rare moment of quiet affection.

"I love it when you come searching for attention like a spoiled little cat waiting for food," he murmured lazily. "You really can't survive long without my affection can you?"

Jin Mulan immediately glared at him.

"I was waiting because you took forever," she replied coldly. "Ah yes." Luo He nodded with complete seriousness.

"A truly terrifying explanation. I was made to stay and I nearly surrendered." That only earned him a sharp pinch on the shoulder. He laughed quietly before his fingers slid through the crimson ends of her hair resting over her shoulder.

"Seriously though," he said more softly this time. "Why are you always that interested in your hair? You spend more time taking care of it than your daughter."

Jin Mulan instantly looked offended. "That's not true." She said. "It absolutely is." Luo He said. "It is not." She said once again.

Luo He smirked while lifting a long crimson strand between his fingers letting the lantern light reflect across the silky red color. "Well then explain it to me."

For once Jin Mulan didn't answer immediately. Her gaze drifted toward the bronze mirror nearby where their reflections sat together beneath the warm glow of the lamps.

"Because I like it," she admitted quietly.

"That much?" Luo He asked. Her fingers lightly touched her hair near the ends.

"When I was younger," she said softly.

"People always talked about my bloodline first. Or my cultivation talent. Or my appearance." A small pause followed.

"But my hair…" She looked down slightly.

"It always felt like the only thing that belonged completely to me." Luo He stayed silent, listening. Jin Mulan rarely opened herself this honestly.

"And after it changed color." She continued quietly. "It started feeling like proof." "Proof of what?" Luo He asked confusingly.

Her eyes slowly returned to his. "That I'm no longer the same person I used to be."

The room became quiet afterward.

Outside rain still tapped softly against the distant courtyard stones while the lantern beside the bed flickered gently in the silence.

Then Luo He smiled faintly and brushed several loose strands behind her ear with unusual gentleness. "Well," he said calmly.

"I like your hair too." Jin Mulan raised a brow slightly. "Only my hair?" Luo He immediately nodded with a completely serious expression.

"Yes. The rest is barely acceptable." She stared at him for exactly one second before grabbing the front of his robe.
