Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Price of a Memory

The dust from the confrontation with the Royal Scouts had barely settled when the silence of the plains began to feel heavier than the battle itself. Leonardo stood amidst the tall, dry grass, his chest heaving as the dark violet glow in his eyes slowly flickered. The three knights lay unconscious—or perhaps dead—their silver armor now tarnished by the oily residue of his shadow mana.

He looked at his hands. They were trembling, not from fear, but from an overwhelming coldness that seemed to originate from the very center of his soul.

[System Notification: Combat Ended.] [Exp Gained: +600. Shadow Mastery: 15.5% (+1.5%)] [Status: Soul Corruption at 8.1%. Warning: Emotional numbness detected.]

"Emotional numbness..." Leonardo whispered, the words feeling dry on his tongue. He tried to think of his mother's face—the way her eyes used to crinkle when she laughed while baking bread. He could see the kitchen, he could see the sunlight on the wooden table, but her face... her face was a blur of gray static.

The system was hungry. It didn't just take mana; it took the very things that made him Leonardo.

He turned away from the fallen knights and began walking toward a small, dilapidated village visible on the horizon. It was a ghost town, likely abandoned during the last Mana War. As he entered the perimeter, the rusted gates creaked a mournful greeting. The houses were hollow shells, their thatched roofs long since rotted away.

Suddenly, the Blue Screen flickered with an intensity he hadn't seen before.

[Emergency Quest: The Echo of the Past.] [Objective: Investigate the ruins of the 'Elder's House'.] [Reward: Hidden Skill Unlock / Mysterious Black Box.]

Leonardo followed the translucent arrow floating in his vision. It led him to a house that looked slightly better preserved than the others. Inside, the air was thick with dust and the scent of damp wood. On a broken stone altar in the corner sat a small, metallic box. It was pitch black, darker than even his own shadows, and it seemed to pull the light from the room toward it.

As his hand neared the box, a new prompt appeared:

[Verification Required: To open the 'Void Relic', a sacrifice is needed.] [Condition: Give up one 'Trivial Memory' from your childhood.]

Leonardo hesitated. "Trivial? What do you consider trivial?" he asked the empty room.

The system didn't answer with words. Instead, three icons appeared:

The memory of your first wooden toy.

The memory of the taste of your favorite winter stew.

The memory of a song your father once hummed.

A surge of anger boiled in Leonardo's gut. None of these were trivial. These were the only things he had left of the boy who lived before the Blue Screen appeared. But the logic of the [Shadow Weaver] was cold. To survive the King's next wave of assassins, he needed power. Without this relic, he was just a boy playing with shadows.

"Take the song," Leonardo said, his voice cracking. "I... I don't remember his face anyway."

[Sacrifice Accepted. Processing...]

Instantly, a piece of his heart felt like it had been scooped out with a cold blade. He tried to hum the tune, but there was nothing—only a hollow silence where the melody used to be. The black box clicked open.

Inside lay a single, obsidian ring and a scroll made of human skin.

[Item Obtained: Ring of the Silent Hunter.] [Effect: Reduces Shadow Flash mana cost by 20%. Grants 'Stealth' in low-light conditions.] [Skill Learned: Shadow Bind (Active).]

Leonardo slid the ring onto his finger. It felt like a frozen serpent wrapping around his skin, merging with his bone. He could feel the shadows in the room leaning toward him, whispering secrets he couldn't yet understand. He was no longer just a victim of the system; he was becoming a part of it.

He walked out of the ruined house, the red moon now high in the sky. He felt stronger, faster, and more lethal than ever before. But as he looked at the horizon, he realized he didn't feel the urge to go home anymore. The word 'home' was starting to lose its meaning.

"Is this what you want?" he asked the Blue Screen. "To make me a god with no soul?"

[Notification: Efficiency is the only path to divinity.] [Current Objective: Locate the Capital's Underground Resistance.]

Leonardo began to run. He didn't tire. He didn't ache. He moved like a dark blur across the plains, a silent hunter heading toward a destination he no longer remembered why he hated. The shadows trailed behind him like a royal cape made of nightmares.
