Cherreads

Chapter 19 - The Tearing of the Fabric

The white light that burst from the metal tower was so intense it didn't just burn the eyes; it seemed to burn memory itself. Julian fell to the ground, his body convulsing under the influence of waves of raw data flowing from "The Mother Core" directly into his chip. He felt as if thousands of magnetic needles were piercing his brain, shredding old images and planting cold programming codes in their place.

"Julian! Listen to me.. you have to resist!" Claire screamed, trying to crawl toward him amidst the rising dust and the debris of electronic devices that began exploding one by one.

Amidst this din, the specter of "The Overseer" rose again, but he was no longer as calm as before. His image was flickering and distorting, his digital eyes flashing a deep, blood-red. "You don't understand, Julian.. by destroying this tower, you are not liberating humans, but leaving them in complete mental exposure. Their minds are no longer prepared for freedom!"

*"He fears losing!"* Edward Collins's voice roared within Julian's consciousness, and this time his voice was stronger than ever, as if he had drawn his energy from the explosion. *"Raise your right hand.. now! Don't just cut the tower.. cut 'The Overseer' from his roots!"*

With a Herculean effort, Julian raised his head. His right eye had completely turned a glowing gold. He no longer saw the hall as it was; he saw the digital "threads" connecting The Overseer to the global network, the invisible fabric wrapped around humanity's neck.

Julian extended his right hand into the air, and with a swift movement as if closing the blades of a giant pair of scissors, he gripped the air. At that moment, something unprecedented happened; The Overseer let out a shriek that wasn't electronic, but a shriek of real human pain. His image began to tear and dissolve into the void, while the "threads" Julian saw were snapping and flying off like burning sparks.

"I.. I am not just a program.." were the last words The Overseer spoke before vanishing completely, leaving behind an eerie silence broken only by the bells of the cathedral starting to ring above due to the ground tremors.

Julian fell again, but this time he was silent. Claire approached him and placed her hand on his shoulder, and Julian recoiled instinctively. "Don't touch me, Claire.. I feel them all."

"Feel who?" she asked in bewilderment.

"The people.. outside," Julian whispered, his eyes closed. "I feel their minds struggling. I cut the bond, and now they are drowning in their memories."

Julian stood up with difficulty and looked at his right hand. The golden scar in his palm was pulsing with a faint light, as if it had become part of his nervous system. The leather file he had been carrying was completely burned in the explosion, but Julian didn't feel sad; he realized that the information was no longer on paper, but engraved in his consciousness.

"We have to get out of here," Julian said in a cold, decisive voice. "The isolation will start at any moment. The Sand Club won't let Paris wake up simply."

As they left the crypt and ascended toward the streets of Paris, the city's large screens began flashing encrypted messages. There were no more advertisements or music; only programming symbols running at a frantic speed. As soon as they stepped into the open air, they saw the scene that would completely change the course of the war.

People in the cathedral square were standing in their places, looking at the sky in awe. Some were weeping silently, others laughing hysterically. The "Silence" had broken, and human "Noise" had returned to fill the horizon.

At the end of the chapter, as Julian looked at the horizon, massive drones appeared and began drawing "red lines" in the sky, to start the next stage of the global plan: **Chapter Twenty: The Digital Quarantine**.

Julian looked at Claire and said one sentence before they disappeared into the alley: "Edward was right about one thing.. the scissors are not content with just cutting; they must resew what they have torn, or everyone will die in the chaos."
