Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Tension Rising

Tension isn't always loud.

Sometimes it simmers.

Builds.

Breath by breath… glance by glance… word by word—

Until it snaps.

---

Gunfire shattered the night.

Inside the car—

Chaos.

Outside—

Worse.

---

"Left!" Dante barked, his voice rough but sharp enough to cut through the noise.

"I see it!" Valentina snapped back, ducking as bullets cracked against the windshield.

Glass splintered.

Spiderweb fractures spread across her line of sight.

Not good.

Not good at all.

---

"Drive!" he ordered.

"I am driving!"

"Faster."

"You want us dead quicker?"

"Yes—if it gets us out of here."

She shot him a glare.

"Not funny."

"I'm not joking."

---

Another shot rang out—

Closer.

Too close.

---

"Hold on," she muttered.

---

She slammed the accelerator.

The engine roared—

The car lunged forward—

Straight toward the blockade.

---

"Valentina—"

"Trust me."

His jaw tightened.

"Bad idea."

"Only one we've got."

---

The men ahead raised their weapons—

Too slow.

---

The car crashed through them.

Metal screeched.

Bodies scattered.

Gunfire exploded behind them as they broke through the trap.

---

"Still think it was a bad idea?" she asked, breath uneven.

"Yes."

A beat.

"Effective," he added.

---

She almost smiled.

Almost.

---

Behind them—

Engines roared.

The chase wasn't over.

---

"Company," she said.

"I know."

"How many?"

"Too many."

"Great."

---

The car swerved sharply as bullets tore through the rear again.

Closer.

More accurate.

---

"They're not backing off," she said.

"They won't."

"Why?"

"Because you're worth more alive than dead."

"And you?"

"Disposable."

---

Her grip tightened on the wheel.

"I don't like that answer."

"Get used to it."

"No."

---

A pause.

Heavy.

---

"No," she repeated. "I don't think I will."

---

He glanced at her.

Really looked this time.

Even through the pain.

Even through the blood.

---

"You're stubborn," he muttered.

"You're alive because of it."

"Debatable."

---

Another sharp turn.

The car barely held the road.

---

Her vision blurred for a second—

Pain flaring from her wound.

---

He noticed.

Of course he did.

---

"You're slowing," he said.

"I'm fine."

"You're not."

"Focus on not dying."

"I am. That includes you."

---

Silence stretched.

Tight.

---

"Why?" she asked suddenly.

---

He frowned slightly.

"Why what?"

"Why do you keep doing that?"

"Doing what?"

"Acting like I matter."

---

The question hit differently.

Closer.

More dangerous than anything outside the car.

---

"You're the assignment," he said.

The words came out automatic.

Cold.

Safe.

---

Her jaw tightened.

"There it is."

---

Another shot hit the side of the car.

Loud.

Jarring.

---

"You expected something else?" he asked.

"I don't know what I expected."

"Then don't."

---

Her grip tightened further.

Knuckles white.

---

"I hate that answer."

"Good."

"Why?"

"Because it keeps things simple."

---

She laughed.

Short.

Sharp.

Bitter.

---

"Nothing about this is simple," she said.

"You're making it complicated."

"No," she shot back. "You are."

---

He shifted slightly in his seat, wincing despite himself.

---

"How?" he asked.

---

"By pretending this is just a job."

"It is."

"Then why did you take that bullet?"

---

Silence.

---

Another shot rang out.

Closer.

Danger closing in.

---

"Answer me," she pressed.

"Not now."

"No," she said firmly. "Now."

---

He turned his head slightly.

Met her gaze.

---

"Because you would've died," he said.

---

"That's not an answer."

"It is tonight."

---

Her eyes narrowed.

"Not good enough."

---

"Then survive long enough to get a better one."

---

That stopped her.

Just for a second.

---

Then—

"Fine," she said. "But you owe me one."

---

He almost smirked.

---

"I don't owe you anything."

"You do now."

"Not how it works."

"It is now."

---

Tension shifted.

Changed.

---

Not gone.

Never gone.

But different.

---

Behind them—

The chase tightened.

---

"They're gaining," she said.

"I know."

"Plan?"

"Still thinking."

"That's comforting."

---

Another vehicle pulled up beside them.

Too close.

---

A man leaned out—

Gun raised—

---

"Down!" Dante snapped.

---

She ducked—

He fired—

---

Glass shattered completely this time.

Fragments flying everywhere.

---

She swerved hard—

Clipping the other car—

Sending it spinning off the road.

---

"One less," she muttered.

"Still not enough."

---

The road ahead narrowed.

Sharp turn.

Cliffside.

No room for mistakes.

---

"Hold on," she said again.

---

He braced instinctively.

---

The car took the turn—

Too fast—

Sliding—

Skidding—

---

For a second—

They lost control.

---

The edge loomed.

Dark.

Endless.

---

"Valentina—!"

"I've got it!"

---

Barely.

---

The car straightened at the last second.

---

Silence hit.

Brief.

Fragile.

---

Then—

Headlights appeared ahead.

---

Another vehicle.

Blocking the road.

---

Her breath caught.

---

"Again?" she muttered.

---

Dante's eyes narrowed.

---

"No," he said slowly.

---

"What?"

---

"That's not them."

---

The car ahead didn't move.

Didn't fire.

Didn't react.

---

It just—

Waited.

---

A door opened.

---

A figure stepped out.

---

Familiar.

---

The watcher.

---

He stood in the middle of the road.

Calm.

Unarmed.

Like the chaos around them didn't exist.

---

"What is he doing?" she asked.

---

"Something we're not going to like."

---

Behind them—

The pursuing cars closed in.

Fast.

---

Trapped.

Front and back.

---

"Pick a side," she said.

---

He stared at the man ahead.

Then at the enemies behind.

---

Then back at her.

---

"Trust me," he said.

---

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

---

Then—

"Bad habit," she muttered.

---

He almost smiled.

---

"Drive."

---

Straight toward the unknown.

---

Because sometimes—

The biggest risk—

Is the only way out.

---

The car surged forward.

---

The watcher didn't move.

Didn't flinch.

Didn't step aside.

---

"Dante—!"

---

"Keep going!"

---

At the last second—

He raised his hand.

---

And everything changed.

---

The road ahead exploded.

---

Not from their side.

From his.

---

A blast tore through the blockade behind him—

Engulfing the pursuing vehicles in fire.

---

Shockwave.

Heat.

Chaos.

---

Valentina slammed the brakes—

Barely stopping in time.

---

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unreal.

---

The watcher lowered his hand slowly.

---

Then looked at them.

---

And for the first time—

There was no mystery in his eyes.

---

Just warning.

---

"This is bigger than you think," he said.

---

Dante's grip tightened.

---

"How much bigger?"

---

The man's expression darkened.

---

"You're not just being hunted."

---

A beat.

---

"You're being chosen."

---

Silence.

Cold.

Final.

---

And somehow—

That was worse.
