"Hmm~ Mmm~" Rachel hummed to herself, and Gabriel nodded his head to her tunes.
That was when one of the doors in the distance finally opened, and a single vampire stepped in. It was a woman of average height, and with her hair as pale white as her skin, she certainly stood out.
And so, step after step, she approached Gabriel and Rachel before finally stopping in front of their table.
Then, she bowed and introduced herself.
"Hello, I'm—"
"Next," Rachel said immediately, not even looking up at the woman.
Gabriel raised a brow and leaned in slightly. "Are you sure? I mean... Don't we want to listen to what she has to say first?"
Rachel cocked her head back and replied in a whisper:
"Her shirt's not ironed, her hair is fake, her nails are uneven, she took some drugs before coming here to make herself look stronger, and last but not least, she walks as if she has something up her ass."
Then, she glanced back at the woman and smiled.
"In short, you're unsuitable. Thank you for your time. You may now leave."
The woman was nearly as shocked as Gabriel, who heard everything first hand. He never knew there could be so many reasons to be rejected, especially when that woman couldn't even give her name.
Though, as he stared at her begrudgingly walking away, all he could do was sigh.
"Are you going to judge everyone this harshly?" Gabriel asked.
She shrugged. "If everyone's going to be this incompetent, then yeah."
Hmm...
"You did say I'd have a say in it," Gabriel said.
"Okay fine. You do the next one then. Here she comes," Rachel replied.
The door opened, and another woman walked in. Unlike the one before, she had short brown hair, and she seemed very nervous. Power wise... Gabriel couldn't even tell the difference.
Though he was a little nicer than Rachel, as when the woman arrived, he let her introduce herself.
"H-Hello... My name's Letty, and I'd love to work as a maid for the Vermillion household."
"Hello Letty. I'm happy you were able to make it," Gabriel said, making her ease up a little.
"Thank you..."
That didn't change the fact that she had low confidence though.
"Tell us a little about yourself, Letty."
"A-About me? I... I like taking care of others. I was born in an orphanage, and when I got older, I began working in that orphanage. I started working because I liked the feeling I get when I know someone relies on me. After I became a vampire, that feeling became stronger."
Letty lowered her head slightly.
"That's why I want to try taking care of someone like you two. I... I know you're not children, but I can cook, I can clean, and I'm really good at medicine and alchemy, because one of the children I took care of was actually a witch."
Gabriel's eyes widened.
'A Witch? They're apparently as dangerous as vampires, since they can do magic, alchemy and all sorts of enchanting. I thought they didn't exist, since the Witch Hunter Association is way too empty...'
But they were real?.
"Well Letty, you've convinced me. Obviously, when you start working, we'll need to verify just how true all of this stuff is that you've told us, but until then, congratulations. You're now a maid of the Vermillion household."
Her expression immediately turned cheerful. Before she could say anything though, Rachel chimed in.
"Go to the front desk and find the big breasted red haired woman. Tell her that you passed, and she'll prepare a helicopter for you. Good day."
"Y-Yes madam, sir. G-Goodbye, thank you!"
Finally, she ran out, nearly tripping over her own feet. Once she was no longer in sight, Gabriel turned to Rachel and raised his brow.
"So?"
"So what?" she replied.
He rolled his eyes. "So what do you think?"
She paused for a moment, then said:
"I trust your judgement."
Haaah?
"Trusting my judgement to the point where you don't even want to give me your opinion?"
"Humph. Well, if you want to hear it so badly, then here it is. She's a total wimp, and she's going to flunk out after the first week," Rachel said, causing him to just stare at her in disbelief.
She was so petty.
So, so petty.
But maybe this was just a one time thing?
'It's not like she won't pick someone out of the couple dozen applicants, right...?'
Wrong.
Gabriel couldn't have been more wrong.
They had gone through nearly 52 applicants, and now, there was only one more applicant remaining.
He had personally recruited seven more maids and one butler.
Rachel on the other hand? She got zero.
"...You're way too indecisive," Gabriel said.
"Nope. You're just too lenient. I want perfection," Rachel replied.
At her haughty reply, Gabriel laughed heartily. Honestly, even if she was being a bit of a goofball, he found this side of her cute. On that note, the door opened for one last time.
Yet unlike the previous times, the person who had entered wasn't a vampire, but a human. She was a golden haired woman with equally golden eyes. She stood out immediately, and not just because she was beautiful, but also because every step she took made her confidence clear.
Rachel was so surprised that she forgot to cut her off before the woman could introduce herself.
"My name's Malenia. It's a pleasure to be in the presence of two Vampire Nobles. More importantly, I greet the direct heir to the Vermillion household." She bowed toward Rachel.
For once, Rachel's curiosity was piqued, and despite what her instincts were saying, she was way too intrigued to just end the interview here.
"Malenia, is it? You seem to be a bit more powerful than a Van. Which group are you a part of?" Rachel asked.
A shiver ran down Gabriel's spine at what Rachel just said. She wasn't one to overexaggerate or lie, which could only mean...
"Oh. I suppose I forgot to introduce myself properly."
Malenia straightened her back and put her right hand over her heart.
"My name's Malenia Astarte, and I hold the rank of Paladin in the Vampire Hunter Association."
"But more importantly, I am currently seeking employment."
"..."
'What the fuck?'
