PAIN BREEDERCHAPTER 5: "Voices in the Shadows"
FADE IN:
The entrance to the cave was dim and damp.
Ren stepped inside slowly, gripping his sword tightly.
Elara followed behind him. Her steps were still weak, but determined.
Inside, a small fire was burning.
Two people were sitting by the fire.
At first glance, they didn't look like hunters.
One was a middle-aged man with a beard, wearing old, worn leather armor. His eyes were sharp and cautious.
The other was a young woman with short-cropped hair, holding a bow with a quiver on her back. Her gaze scanned Ren from head to toe.
STRANGER 1(Bearded man – alert, deep voice) Who are you? What are you doing in this forest?
STRANGER 2(Woman – hand moving toward her bow) You smell like a stranger… Like a Breeder.
Ren stopped.
His eyes moved over the two strangers.
It was the first time he had encountered other people in this forest.
And this encounter looked like it would change everything.
REN(low, cautious voice) We… were just passing through. Hunters are after us.
The bearded man raised an eyebrow.
STRANGER 1 Hunters? Then you must be Breeders.
The woman slightly raised her bow.
STRANGER 2 Breeders aren't very welcome here. You grow stronger by torturing your monsters. To us, you're monsters too.
Ren's hand tightened around the hilt of his sword.
Elara stood at the entrance of the cave.
Her eyes were locked on the two strangers.
ELARA(weak but clear voice) …Don't touch my son.
The bearded man looked at Elara.
His eyes narrowed.
STRANGER 1 This… is an Echo? And your own mother?
The woman raised her bow higher.
STRANGER 2 This is disgusting… He turned his own mother into a monster.
Ren took a step forward.
Purple energy began to glow faintly around his arms.
REN(cold voice) I killed three hunters outside. You're only two people, and you're not hunters.
STRANGER 2(pulling her bowstring tighter) Are you threatening us?
The bearded man raised his hand. He made a "stop" sign with his eyes.
STRANGER 1 If you're really running… come inside. Let's make a deal.
Ren hesitated for a moment.
Then he looked at his mother.
Elara nodded slightly.
The two of them entered the cave together.
At that moment, the entrance of the cave began to close.
Sealed by a special spell.
The stones slowly slid and sealed the entrance.
The inside was lit only by the dim light of the fire.
The bearded man walked toward the fire.
STRANGER 1 My name is Yoren. This is my sister, Lira.
LIRA(still not lowering her bow, cautious) Who are you? And that Echo… is she really your mother?
Ren took a deep breath.
Elara was still behind him.
REN(low voice) My name is Ren. She is… my mother, Elara. Yes, she is my Echo.
Yoren stroked his beard.
YOREN Breeders aren't very liked here. But… hunters are our enemies too. Maybe we have a common interest.
Lira was still looking suspicious.
REN(determined voice) I can work for you. After all, if you hurt me, my Echo gets stronger. If you hurt my Echo, I get stronger. So let's get out of here together and eliminate the hunters.
Yoren and Lira looked at each other.
At that moment, the voices of the hunters could be heard outside the cave.
HUNTER VOICE(from afar) The trail leads here! The Breeders are in the cave!
Yoren took a deep breath.
YOREN Fine. We'll kill the hunters. And you two will submit to our guild.
Lira was still cautious but nodded.
The tension inside the cave remained high.
But as the hunters' hoofbeats grew closer outside, four people… stood on the threshold of a shared fate.
