Chapter 4 - Meeting Carlisle

General POV

The blue Nissan shot down the roads surrounding Forks, going well over the speed limit.

Neither of the occupants was worried about the speed, of course. As vampires, a car crash would never result in a serious injury. Niklaus's only concern would be the actual car getting damaged.

Niklaus glanced at his daughter. "I had a few of the cars shipped over to the house. The Aston, Rolls-Royce and the Range Rover. You can have any others shipped over if you want them."

Unlike Niklaus, Freya preferred a variety in the cars she drove. She had over 10 cars available back in Scotland. As vampires who have lived through almost all of history, they certainly weren't tight on money. Their garage alone could make most people drool with envy.

"That should be fine for just a year of living here," she answered without looking up from her phone.

While Niklaus preferred to keep mostly to himself, Freya had made a few human friends, if only to stave off her boredom.

They pulled up to a large gate, which opened, revealing their newest home. It was large; most of the building was black, and it looked as if it were made almost entirely of windows. While not as large as their home back in Britain, it was more than enough for two people.

It was surrounded by the forest on all sides, making for an ideal hunting location.

Niklaus and Freya had no problem drinking animal blood; however, they preferred human blood if given the option. Given the multiple contacts Niklaus had made over the years, he had found someone willing to sell from a blood bank a couple of towns over. The animals in the forests would merely serve as snacks should they need them.

After reversing into the simple 4-car garage, Niklaus got out to look at the cars that had been delivered.

An Aston Martin DB9, a Rolls-Royce Phantom, and a Range Rover Vogue. All in a metallic, 'Eiger Grey' colour.

Just the garage alone would be worth around £500,000.

As they retrieved their bags from the car, Niklaus turned to Freya and said, "Get your things unpacked; everything else was delivered to your room before we got here. We have about a week before we join the school, so I'm going to go and find someone."

"Who are you going to find? I didn't know you had any friends?"

"I have friends, your uncle and aunt are my friends. I'm actually going to find the coven leader who lives here. From the information I have, there is a coven of 7 vampires who have a claim here. I'm going to let him know about our stay. I'd rather not get into a fight over a mere territory."

Freya didn't look worried about the larger-than-normal coven size at all. After 800 years of training with her father, it would take a lot more than that to scare her.

"Okay, I'll get everything unpacked and probably walk around the town for a while. Should help me see what goes on around here."

Niklaus nodded at that before taking his bags to his room.

Both walls of his corner room were floor-to-ceiling windows, with a switch to lower curtains all around him. There was a sound system in his room, as well as a large 42-inch flatscreen TV at the end of his bed.

Niklaus didn't care all that much about having the latest and best technology, but he spent as much as possible to ensure that Freya had everything she needed. He had even bought a few private islands for her in the past, so simply modernising a house meant very little to him.

His music records lined one of the walls, and a bookshelf mixed with DVDs lined another. He had basically everything he needed. Not a lot, but for someone who has never really caught up with modern trends, he felt satisfied with his setup. There was also a walk-in closet, which held every item of clothing he owned. Mostly the same outfit in different colours or simply copies. He already knew what he liked to wear; why would he wear anything different?

He lay down on the bed for a while to gather his thoughts before leaving. People may wonder why a vampire needs a bed if they never sleep, but Niklaus enjoys simply lying down and relaxing. One doesn't need to sleep in order to enjoy a comfortable bed.

'Let's get this over with', he thought, before picking himself up.

He walked over to his closet, changing into a black blazer, fitted black trousers, and a white long-sleeved sweater. After getting dressed, he walked over to the wall, where a barely visible switch was waiting for him. After pushing it, he pulled out a weapon rack from a hidden compartment.

It held everything from swords, axes, and knives to various firearms.

While a vampire's speed can handle basically any threat, sometimes he felt too lazy to fight properly. That's why he had this assortment of firearms, in case he had to kill a human and couldn't be bothered to put in the effort.

Of course, if he were fighting a vampire, he would never use these. They could simply outrun the bullets.

He pulled out a simple combat knife and fitted it into the sheath at the back of his belt. He had invested a lot of money to make weapons durable enough to harm a vampire without breaking in a single hit.

Before leaving, he grabbed the slip of paper that was on his desk, holding the information of the vampire he was going to find.

-----------------------

Name: Carlisle Cullen

Age: 365

Profession: Physician

Coven: Olympic coven

Coven members: 7

Workplace: Forks Community Hospital

-----------------------

Naturally, the information didn't include his home address or the names of his coven members. Nobody wants to get that close to a large coven just for a pay check. However, this was more than enough to find his target.

After bidding goodbye to Freya and grabbing his keys, Niklaus got into his car and sped off down the road towards Forks.

-----------------------

Forks Community Hospital

The hospital was a nice building to look at. Two stories, with ample parking and a row of small trees lining the outside. It definitely wasn't suited for major cities, but for a small town like this it seemed to fit in perfectly.

After parking his car, Niklaus locked it and walked towards the building. He had deliberately timed his visit to match Doctor Cullen's 'lunch' break.

Niklaus had already lowered his presence enough to not be stopped by anyone in his way. The technique didn't make him invisible, more that it made people's gaze simply pass over him. If somebody was looking for him specifically, they would be able to find him with a little effort.

Eventually arriving at the office he was looking for, he discovered that the resident vampire hadn't quite arrived yet. Rather than standing outside he simply walked through the door and took a seat.

While Niklaus intended to show some respect to the resident coven, it didn't mean he would simply stand outside waiting for an unknown amount of time.

After roughly 25 minutes, the door to the office finally opened. The man who walked in was around 5'10 in height. He had blonde hair, a face that seemed a little too handsome to be human and, interestingly, golden eyes. Niklaus would have to ask about that later. Perhaps there was some kind of turf war happening.

Carlisle seemed somewhat surprised to see someone waiting for him in his office. That surprised turned to wariness, however, when he realised that this man had no heartbeat and he saw the piercing red eyes peeking out from behind the curtain of hair that adorned the top half of his face.

After regaining his composure, Carlisle addressed his visitor.

"We don't usually get a lot of vampires passing through here. Especially not ones who come to visit me specifically. What have you come here for?"

Niklaus smiled slightly. No hostility, just weariness. That's a good start.

"My name is Niklaus Shadowborn. My daughter and I are here to attend Forks High School for the final year. I learnt through some sources that you and your coven have taken up somewhat of a permanent residence here, so I thought I'd come and inform you of our arrival.

You need not worry. We won't be hunting in this area, nor will we be causing trouble or drawing attention to you and your group. We simple came to get a more recent high school qualification before leaving again."

Carlisle nodded slightly. If a vampire was to choose a somewhat permanent residence, the weather in Forks was certainly ideal. It isn't surprising that someone would choose to stay here. He also thought back to his daughter, Alice's, words. He knew a couple of vampires would arrive, but he needed to be sure these were the ones that they were expecting.

"I have a few questions if you don't mind. Even if you are going to live here peacefully, I can't rest easy without knowing who you are."

Niklaus had to admit, that was a good point. He had never thought about that before. Then again, he and Freya had never needed to due to their overwhelming strength. "Very well, I will try to answer your questions as best as I can."

"Okay, then why come to re-enter school? Do you have any enemies who may cause trouble here? How many members are there in your coven? How do you intend to feed without hunting humans? Finally, Why come to Forks specifically? There are surely other options, especially if you know there is already a coven here."

Niklaus nodded at that, before taking a moment to organise his answers.

"First, according to our current graduation records, we should both be around 40 years old. Naturally, without aging, that presents an issue, so we re-enter school every now and then to get new records.

Second, we have no particular enemies. We have had some fallings out with some other covens, but nothing big enough for them to travel all the way to the US to hunt us down.

Third, there are only two of us. Myself and my adoptive daughter. We have seen no need to include anyone else in our family to this date.

Fourth, I have set up access to various blood banks in the area. The only live humans we feed on are the truly despicable ones. If I find a murderer or rapist running around this town, I will naturally use them for a fresh food source. Otherwise, all of our blood will be delivered by our contacts.

To answer your final question, I am not sure. I felt a strange pull towards this place, as did my daughter, Freya. The last time I felt something similar was when I found my daughter in the orphanage. Since that worked out so well, we decided to come and see what was pulling us here. I doubt it will be anything bad, nonetheless."

Carlisle took a moment to process Niklaus's answers. He already knew, through Alice's visions, that they were expecting a pair of vampires to arrive. He simply didn't know the exact timeline.

From Niklaus's talk of a 'strange pull', these two could very well be Alice and Jasper's mates, but without all four of them meeting, he had no way to be certain.

Their feeding habits, if true, shouldn't cause any problems. While Carlisle didn't approve of harming humans, Niklaus seemed to have the most humane feeding methods of any red-eyed vampire he had met. He was certainly far better than the Volturi.

"Out of curiosity, how old are you and your daughter?"

Niklaus contemplated answering slightly before realising he had no real reason to hide it. "My daughter Freya has just turned 800 a few months ago. As for myself, I'm not entirely sure. I was a member of the Original coven, so I should be around 8,000, but I could be slightly older. We didn't really have calendars back in those days."

Carlisle's eyes widened slightly at the mention of the originals. All of them were thought to be dead after no-one had seen them in thousands of years. They were also said to be overly arrogant and extremely brutal. That description didn't exactly match the man who took time out of his day to inform a local coven of his arrival.

"I see, well it's not particularly important. Just simple curiosity."

Niklaus nodded, "I understand." He stood up from his chair, "Well, now that I have spoken to you, I'll be leaving. My daughter wanted to explore the town, so I think I shall join her. You have a nice day, Doctor Cullen," he called out over his shoulder as he left the room.

Carlisle watched the door for a moment before sitting behind his desk. He would have to discuss this with his family when he got back home.
