Chapter 36 – The Nesting Begins
The days following our vow renewal ceremony felt like a prolonged, blissful dream. The glow of the event lingered, a warm, comforting blanket wrapped around our little family. Adrian was almost constantly smiling, a deep, contented joy radiating from him. Every morning, he'd kiss my forehead, then my stomach, a ritual of love and anticipation. Our renovated apartment, now truly a home, seemed to hum with a new, vibrant energy.
On Monday morning, we woke up a little later than usual, still basking in the afterglow of the weekend's celebrations. The scent of coffee already brewing drifted from the kitchen – Adrian had insisted on making breakfast today.
"Good morning, my beautiful wife," he greeted, as I walked in, already feeling more rested and happy than I had in years.
"Good morning, my husband," I replied, leaning in for a kiss. "That was quite the weekend."
"The best weekend," he corrected, his eyes twinkling. "Now, no more talk of business today. Just us, and our little one."
After a leisurely breakfast, Adrian prepared to leave for work. "My mom called," he said, pulling on his jacket. "She wants to take you shopping for baby furniture this week. And she has a million ideas for the nursery."
I laughed. "She's on a roll."
"She is," he grinned. "I told her you'd love it. Just don't let her buy everything in pink or blue. We don't know what we're having yet." He kissed my forehead, then my stomach. "Be good, my two loves. Papa will be home soon." He left at 8 a.m.
I spent the morning sorting through the beautiful gifts we'd received from the vow renewal. Each item, from decorative pieces for the home to thoughtful tokens of friendship, was a reminder of the love surrounding us.
At 4 p.m., Mrs. Cole texted: *Layla wants to draw pictures of the baby's room. She has very strong opinions on colors!* My heart warmed. Layla's excitement was truly infectious. I replied: *Tell her I can't wait to see them!*
At 8 p.m., Adrian came home, his face alight with a new kind of energy. He hugged me, then dropped to his knees, pressing a kiss to my growing belly. "Hello, little one. Your big sister is already designing your room."
I laughed. "She's quite the artist."
"She is," he agreed, standing up. "My mom called again. She found a perfect crib and wants to show it to you online."
I served dinner, a delicious meal that had become a comforting routine. We ate, discussing baby names, nursery themes, and Layla's latest artistic endeavors.
After dinner, we settled onto the couch, Adrian's hand resting on my stomach.
"Lila," he said, his voice soft.
"Yes?"
"This nesting phase," he mused, "it's wonderful. It feels like we're truly building something, together."
"We are," I agreed, leaning my head on his shoulder. "Our future, our family."
He kissed my forehead. "I love you."
"I love you too."
We sat on the couch until 10 p.m., lost in dreams of our expanding family. He went to his office, and I to my room.
That night I opened the notebook.
*Day 148 – The joy of the vow renewal lingers. Adrian's mom is planning the nursery and baby furniture shopping. Layla is designing the baby's room. The nesting has truly begun.*
Under it:
*She's Lila. She's his wife. Building a beautiful future, one baby step at a time.*
Tuesday morning, the preparations for the baby's arrival continued with full force. Adrian was up early, already on the phone with his mother, coordinating my baby furniture shopping trip.
He kissed my stomach before leaving at 7 a.m.
At 10 a.m., Adrian's mother arrived, armed with catalogs and swatches. "Lila, my dear! We have so much to do! Cribs, changing tables, rocking chairs! And colors! Do we want gender-neutral, or do you have a feeling?"
I laughed, feeling a surge of affection for her boundless energy. "Let's start with neutral, for now. But I'm open to anything beautiful."
We spent the entire day shopping, moving from one baby store to another, then to furniture showrooms. Adrian's mother had impeccable taste, and she carefully balanced practicality with aesthetics. We chose a beautiful wooden crib that would be perfect for either a boy or a girl, a comfortable rocking chair, and a changing table that doubled as a dresser.
By 5 p.m., I was delightfully exhausted, my feet aching but my heart full. Adrian's mother dropped me off, promising to send Adrian pictures of our selections.
At 8 p.m., Adrian came home. He took one look at my tired but happy face. "You've had a busy day, haven't you, my love?" He hugged me gently, then his customary kiss to my belly. "Little one, you're going to have the most beautiful room."
I smiled. "Your mom is a miracle worker. We got everything."
He grinned. "I knew she would. She sent me pictures. It's perfect."
We had dinner, talking about the day's successful shopping trip. Adrian was clearly thrilled, already envisioning our baby in the nursery.
After dinner, we settled onto the couch, Adrian's hand resting on my stomach.
"Lila," he said, a thoughtful expression on his face.
"Yes?"
"Have you thought about what kind of birth you want? We should start looking into options, classes."
My heart swelled. He was so involved, so thoughtful. "I've started to look into a few things. I think I'd like a natural birth, if possible. And yes, classes would be wonderful."
He kissed my forehead. "Whatever you want, my love. We'll do it together. Every step of the way."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
We sat there until 10 p.m., discussing birthing options, our plans for the nursery, and the ever-growing list of things to prepare. He went to his office, and I to my room.
That night I opened the notebook.
*Day 149 – Spent the day shopping for baby furniture with Adrian's mom. Got the crib, changing table, rocking chair. Adrian is thinking about birthing classes. It's all becoming so real.*
Under it:
*She's Lila. She's his wife. Preparing their nest for their precious arrival.*
Wednesday morning, the reality of our expanding family felt more tangible than ever. Adrian was humming a lullaby as he made breakfast.
He kissed my stomach before leaving for work at 7 a.m.
At 4 p.m., Mrs. Cole texted: *Layla has finished her nursery drawings! She wants to present them to you tonight.* I smiled, excited to see Layla's vision.
At 8 p.m., Adrian came home, his eyes twinkling. He hugged me, then our baby. "I hear we have a presentation tonight."
I laughed. "We do indeed."
Layla arrived shortly after, her face serious, holding a stack of colorful papers. She meticulously showed us each drawing: a yellow wall with a blue cloud, a green rug with purple flowers, a mobile with painted stars and moons. Her imagination was boundless.
Adrian and I praised each drawing, assuring her we would incorporate her ideas. Her pride was evident.
After she went home with Mrs. Cole, Adrian and I discussed Layla's wonderful ideas, making plans for how to integrate them into the nursery decor.
After dinner, we settled onto the couch, Adrian's hand resting on my stomach.
"Lila," he said, a profound gratitude in his voice.
"Yes?"
"To see Layla so happy, so involved… it means everything. You've given her a family, a sense of belonging."
"She's my daughter, Adrian. And this is our family."
He kissed my forehead. "I love you. All three of you."
"I love you too."
We sat there until 10 p.m., savoring the quiet joy of our complete family. He went to his office, and I to my room.
That night I opened the notebook.
*Day 150 – Layla presented her nursery drawings. They are wonderful! She's so happy. Adrian is so happy. We are truly becoming a family, in every sense of the word.*
Under it:
*She's Lila. She's his wife. Her heart is overflowing with love and joy.*
Thursday morning, the focus shifted to the medical aspects of pregnancy. Adrian had scheduled our next prenatal appointment, insisting on coming with me.
He kissed my stomach before leaving for work at 7 a.m.
At 8 p.m., he came home, looking forward to our upcoming appointment. He hugged me, then our baby. "Are you ready to meet the doctor again, little one?"
We had dinner, discussing the baby's health, my progress, and Adrian's eagerness to hear the baby's heartbeat again.
After dinner, we settled onto the couch, Adrian's hand resting on my stomach.
"Lila," he said.
"Yes?"
"I can't wait to see our baby. To hold them." His voice was thick with emotion.
"Me too, Adrian. Soon."
He kissed my forehead. "I love you."
"I love you too."
We sat until 10 p.m., a quiet anticipation filling the air. He went to his office. I went to my room.
That night I opened the notebook.
*Day 151 – Next prenatal appointment scheduled. Adrian is so excited to go. The baby is growing. Our life is growing. Everything is preparing for their arrival.*
Under it:
*She's Lila. She's his wife. Counting down the days until they meet their little one.*
I closed the notebook. Our life, once fragmented and uncertain, was now a tapestry woven with threads of joy, anticipation, and profound love. The nesting phase was in full swing, each new preparation a testament to the beautiful future we were building, together.
