The evening sky was painted in shades of orange and pink, as if the sun itself didn't want to leave. A gentle breeze passed through the college campus, carrying laughter, chatter, and the sound of footsteps as students began heading home after their last lecture of the day.
Among them was Arjun.
He walked quietly, holding his notebook close to his chest. He wasn't like the others—no loud group of friends, no endless conversations. Arjun preferred silence. He believed in hard work, discipline, and chasing his dreams. His world revolved around his studies and his goal of building a successful future.
That day seemed like any other.
Until it wasn't.
As Arjun passed by the college garden, his eyes fell on someone… and everything changed.
She stood near a tree, talking on her phone. She wore a simple white kurti, and her long hair swayed gently in the wind. There was something
about her smile—something pure, something warm—that made it impossible to look away.
Arjun stopped walking.
He didn't even realize it.
His heartbeat quickened, and for a moment, it felt like the world around him had gone silent. No voices, no footsteps—just her.
"Who is she?" he whispered to himself.
He stood there, watching her, lost in a moment he didn't understand.
And then suddenly… she looked up.
Their eyes met.
Arjun panicked.
He immediately looked away and walked off quickly, his heart racing like he had just done something wrong. But no matter how far he went, her face stayed in his mind.
The next day…
Arjun arrived at college earlier than usual.
He didn't want to admit it, but he was hoping to see her again.
As he walked past the garden, his eyes searched unconsciously—and there she was.
Sitting alone on a bench, writing something in her notebook.
His steps slowed down.
"Should I go talk to her?" he wondered.
His heart said yes.
His mind said no.
"What if she ignores me? What if I sound stupid?"
He stood there, caught between courage and fear.
And then she looked at him again… and smiled.
That smile gave him just enough courage.
Taking a deep breath, Arjun walked toward her.
"Hi…" he said softly.
She looked up and smiled again. "Hi."
"I'm… Arjun," he added, slightly nervous.
"I'm Naina," she replied.
Naina.
Her name felt just as beautiful as she was.
"Are you in first year?" Arjun asked.
"Yes," she said. "And you?"
"Second year."
A brief silence followed. But it wasn't awkward—it was calm, almost comforting.
"Do you always stay this quiet?" Naina asked playfully.
Arjun smiled a little. "Yeah… I guess I'm a bit of an introvert."
"That's not a bad thing," she said. "People like that are usually more real."
For some reason, those words meant a lot to him.
Days turned into weeks.
Arjun and Naina started meeting every day in the garden after classes. What began as small conversations slowly turned into something deeper.
Arjun, who rarely opened up to anyone, found himself sharing his thoughts with her—his dreams, his fears, his struggles.
And Naina listened.
She always listened.
She laughed at his jokes, encouraged his goals, and sometimes just sat quietly beside him, enjoying the silence.
But Naina wasn't just cheerful—there was a hidden sadness in her eyes.
One day, as they sat under their usual tree, she said softly, "I don't trust people easily."
Arjun looked at her. "Why?"
"Because people change," she replied.
There was something in her voice… something broken.
Arjun didn't think twice before saying, "I won't change."
Naina looked at him, searching his face as if trying to understand if he meant it.
"We'll see," she said with a faint smile.
As time passed, Arjun realized something he had never felt before.
He was falling in love.
He started noticing little things—how her eyes lit up when she laughed, how she tucked her hair behind her ear, how her presence made everything feel better.
If she didn't come to college for a day, he felt restless.
But he was scared.
"What if she doesn't feel the same?"
"What if I lose her as a friend?"
So he kept his feelings to himself.
Then came the annual fest.
The entire college was decorated with lights, music, and excitement. Students were dancing, laughing, and celebrating.
In the middle of all that chaos, Arjun received a message from Naina:
"Come to the garden. I need to talk to you."
His heart skipped a beat.
"Need to talk?"
He hurried toward the garden.
Naina was standing there.
She looked different that day—more beautiful than ever. She wore a blue dress, and her expression was serious.
"Arjun…" she said softly.
"Yes?" he replied.
"I need to tell you something."
His chest tightened.
"Go on…"
She took a deep breath.
"I won't be coming to college from tomorrow."
Arjun froze.
"What? Why?" he asked immediately.
"My dad got transferred. We're moving to another city," she said.
It felt like everything around him collapsed.
"You're leaving…?" he asked quietly.
She nodded.
Silence filled the air.
There was so much he wanted to say, but the words just wouldn't come out.
"I should go…" Naina said, turning away.
She started walking.
And then—
"Naina, wait!"
She stopped.
Arjun walked up to her, his heart pounding louder than ever before.
This was it.
He couldn't hold it in anymore.
"I love you," he said.
Naina's eyes filled with tears.
I love you too," she whispered.
For a moment, everything felt perfect.
And then reality hit again.
"Then why are you leaving?" Arjun asked, his voice breaking.
"Because sometimes… love doesn't mean staying together," she said.
"It means remembering… and letting go."
Arjun stood there, unable to move.
Naina looked at him one last time, gave him a soft, painful smile…
And walked away.
That night, Arjun looked up at the sky.
The same sky they once sat under together.
But this time, it felt empty.
He realized something important—
Love isn't always about being together. Sometimes, it's about holding onto memories… even when the person is gone.
And Naina…
She had become a part of his life he could never forget.
