Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Night Everything Gets Worse (Again)

Chapter 7: The Night Everything Gets Worse (Again)

Miller had reached a new level of understanding.

Not enlightenment.

Not wisdom.

But something far more important:

"…This house is cursed."

He stood in the hallway, staring at the two directions of his life.

Left: Cloe's room

Right: Andro's quiet existence

"…And I'm somehow in the middle like a badly written side quest."

The Summoning

"Miller."

He froze.

"…Yes?"

Cloe stood at the end of the hallway.

Calm.

Elegant.

Dangerous.

"…Come here."

"…I don't like how that sounds."

"…Now."

"…I like it even less now."

Inside Cloe's Room (Danger Zone)

Miller stood awkwardly near the door.

Maintaining maximum distance.

"…Why am I here?"

"Work."

"…At night?"

"Yes."

"…In your room?"

"Yes."

"…This feels illegal."

Cloe's Logic (Still Broken)

"You're my assistant."

"…In the office."

"You're my assistant."

"…That doesn't change location rules!"

The Real Problem

She handed him a file.

"Review this."

He opened it.

Paused.

"…This is upside down."

"…Turn it."

"…You could've done that."

"I didn't want to."

Miller's Mental State

I am being tested.

By what? I don't know.

Will I survive? Also no.

Meanwhile… The Man Who Waits

Downstairs—

Andro stood by the stairs.

Looking up.

The light from Cloe's room was on.

He knew.

Of course he knew.

"…She's busy," he whispered.

But he didn't move.

Didn't leave.

Just stood there.

Quiet.

Back Upstairs – The Distance Problem

Miller moved slightly farther from Cloe.

One step.

Then another.

"…Why are you moving away?" she asked.

"…Safety."

"From me?"

"Yes."

"…Why?"

"…Instinct."

Cloe Moves Closer

Step.

Step.

Step.

"…You're strange," she said.

"…I've accepted that."

"…But you don't avoid others like this."

"…Others don't threaten my survival."

A Pause

"…Do I?" she asked.

"…Yes."

"…How?"

"…You exist."

Unexpected Silence

For once—

Cloe didn't respond immediately.

She just looked at him.

Long.

Thoughtful.

The Shift (Subtle but Dangerous)

"…You don't want to be close to me," she said.

"…Correct."

"…Why?"

"…Because the closer I am…"

He stopped.

"…The worse things get."

"…For who?"

"…Everyone."

Meanwhile… Downstairs

Andro slowly sat down.

Still facing the stairs.

Still waiting.

He didn't go up.

Didn't interrupt.

Because—

"…She might be working."

He smiled faintly.

"…I shouldn't disturb her."

Back Upstairs – The Wrong Conclusion

Cloe stepped even closer.

Now too close.

Always too close.

"…Then I'll stay closer," she said.

"…THAT'S THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT I MEANT!"

Miller's Internal Collapse

Logic has left the building.

Desperate Attempt #12: Maximum Push

"You should be with your husband right now!" Miller blurted.

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

"…Why?" Cloe asked quietly.

"…Because it's night."

"…And?"

"…And he's alone!"

"…He's always alone."

That Line Hit Wrong

Even Miller paused.

"…That's not a good thing."

"…It's normal."

"…It shouldn't be!"

A Slight Crack

Cloe's expression didn't change much.

But something—

Something shifted.

Just slightly.

"…You think I'm wrong," she said.

"…Yes."

"…And you keep saying it."

"…Because it's true!"

A Dangerous Question

"…If I go to him," she said slowly, "will you stop avoiding me?"

"…Yes!"

"…Completely?"

"…YES!"

Miller's Hope (Foolish)

This is it.

Progress.

Character development.

Maybe this story can be fixed—

Cloe Turns Away

"…Then I won't go."

"…???"

She looked back at him.

"…I don't want you to avoid me."

Critical Failure: Achieved Again

Miller's Soul Leaves Permanently

"…I see."

Pause.

"…I don't, but I'll pretend."

Downstairs – The Quiet Breaking Point

Andro finally stood up.

The light upstairs was still on.

Voices faintly audible.

He didn't listen.

Didn't try to.

He simply turned away.

Walked back to his room.

Slowly.

Back Upstairs – The Final Blow

"Stay," Cloe said.

"…For what?"

"Work."

"…We finished the file."

"Then stay anyway."

"…That's not work."

"It is."

Miller's Last Resistance

"…No."

Silence.

"…No?" she repeated.

"…No."

"…Why?"

"…Because someone should be with him."

A Long Pause

Cloe looked at him.

Then—

"…You go."

"…What?"

"…If it matters that much to you… you go."

Plot Twist: Activated

Miller's Brain: Restarting

"…You want me to go to your husband?"

"Yes."

"…Instead of you?"

"Yes."

"…This is wrong on so many levels."

Cloe's Final Line

"…You care about him."

"…Yes."

"…Then go."

End Scene

Miller stood outside Andro's room.

Frozen.

"…This is not in the novel."

He raised his hand.

Paused.

"…I'm about to comfort the male lead."

Another pause.

"…As the villain."

He knocked.

Inside the Room

Andro looked up.

Surprised.

"…Miller?"

Final Thought

Miller forced a smile.

"…Hi."

Everything has officially gone off script.
