CHAPTER 16: The Place She Hid the Truth
The house was quiet again.
Too quiet.
Like it was recovering from the chaos of the night before.
But Elara couldn't rest.
Not now.
Not when everything was finally starting to make sense.
She stood alone in the study, the file still open in her hands.
Photos.
Reports.
Clues.
Pieces of a life she used to live.
A life where she wasn't confused.
Where she knew things.
Where she was already fighting.
"I hid something…"
Her voice was barely a whisper.
But it felt heavy.
Important.
Aiden leaned against the doorway, watching her carefully.
"Yes."
No hesitation.
No doubt.
Elara closed her eyes slowly.
Trying to focus.
Trying to feel.
Not think.
Feel.
"Think about that night," Aiden said gently. "Before the accident."
Her breathing slowed.
The room faded.
Rain.
She could hear it.
Loud.
Relentless.
Hitting the car windows.
Her hands tightened slightly.
"It was raining…" she whispered.
Aiden didn't interrupt.
"I was driving," she continued, her voice unsteady. "I was angry… I just left…"
Fragments.
Broken.
But real.
"You called me," Aiden said softly.
"Yes…" she breathed. "I remember… I remember calling you…"
A faint ache built behind her eyes.
But she didn't stop.
"I had something with me," she said suddenly.
Her eyes snapped open.
Aiden straightened slightly.
"What?"
"A bag," she said, her voice gaining strength. "I had a bag with me."
Her heart began to race.
"I didn't trust anyone… I didn't want them to find it…"
"Where did you go?" Aiden asked.
Careful.
Focused.
Elara's breathing quickened again.
The memory blurred—
Then shifted.
A road.
Dark.
Empty.
The rain getting heavier.
"I didn't go home," she said. "I didn't go to you… not yet…"
Aiden frowned slightly.
"Then where?"
Silence.
Then—
Her eyes widened.
"The studio."
The word echoed in the room.
Aiden's expression changed instantly.
"The art studio?" he asked.
Elara nodded slowly.
"Yes…"
Her chest tightened.
"I used to go there when I needed to think… when I needed space…"
The memory hit harder now.
Clearer.
Sharper.
"I hid it there," she said.
Her voice was no longer uncertain.
"I hid the proof there."
Silence filled the room.
But this time—
It wasn't heavy.
It was electric.
Aiden pushed off the wall immediately.
"We go now."
Elara blinked.
"Now?"
"Yes."
His tone left no room for doubt.
"If that's where it is, we don't wait."
Her heart started racing again.
Not from fear.
But from something else.
This was it.
The truth.
An hour later—
The car stopped in front of a quiet building.
Old.
Familiar.
Elara stepped out slowly.
Her chest tightened the moment she saw it.
"I've been here…" she whispered.
Aiden watched her carefully.
"Yes."
The studio looked untouched.
Dark windows.
Locked doors.
Silent.
Too silent.
Aiden's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Stay close."
They stepped inside.
The air was stale.
Dusty.
Still.
Elara moved slowly.
Her eyes scanning everything.
Her heart pounding louder with each step.
"It's here…" she whispered.
"I can feel it…"
Aiden stayed close behind her.
Watching.
Listening.
Ready.
She walked toward the back.
Toward a corner.
Toward a place that felt—
Important.
Her hands trembled slightly as she knelt down.
Her fingers brushing against the wooden floor.
"There was a loose panel…" she murmured.
Aiden crouched beside her.
"Here?"
She nodded.
Then—
Pressed.
A soft click echoed.
The panel shifted.
Elara's breath caught.
Slowly—
She lifted it.
Inside—
A small hidden space.
And within it—
A flash drive.
The proof.
Her heart pounded wildly as she picked it up.
Her hands shaking slightly.
"This is it…" she whispered.
Aiden's eyes darkened.
"Then it's over for them."
But before either of them could move—
A sound.
A creak.
Behind them.
Aiden turned instantly.
Too late.
A voice echoed through the room.
"I was hoping you'd come back for that."
Elara froze.
Her blood ran cold.
Because she knew that voice.
Slowly—
She turned.
And her heart dropped.
Sophia stood at the entrance.
Smiling.
But this time—
There was nothing soft about it.
"You really should've stayed out of this, Elara."
