Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Change of Setup

Ren knew something was off before the lights flickered.

It started with the fan.

A soft, uneven stutter in its rotation—barely noticeable unless you were paying attention.

Then the Wi-Fi icon dipped.

Recovered.

Dipped again.

"…Don't do this," Ren muttered, staring at his screen.

Astra's interface pulsed faintly.

Network stability: fluctuating.

Ren leaned back, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, I can see that."

The lights flickered once.

Twice.

Then steadied.

He exhaled slowly.

"…Alright. That's not a good sign."

Recommendation: delay stream until conditions stabilize.

Ren glanced at the clock.

17:48.

Twelve minutes to go.

He hesitated.

Then shook his head.

"No," he said. "If I wait, it might get worse."

Risk of stream interruption: high.

Ren stood up, already reaching for his hoodie.

"Then I won't stream here."

A brief pause.

For the first time in a while—

Astra didn't respond immediately.

"…What?" Ren said, grabbing his phone and portable charger.

"I can just go somewhere else."

Environmental variability will reduce performance efficiency.

Ren smirked slightly as he slipped on his shoes.

"Yeah," he said. "But it'll save the stream."

Another pause.

Then—

…Alternative accepted.

Ren didn't notice the slight delay in that response.

The air outside was cooler than he expected.

Evening traffic hummed in the distance, the city alive in a way his room never was.

Ren adjusted his bag, walking a little faster than usual.

"…It's been a while," he muttered.

Not since he started taking streaming seriously.

Not since everything became… structured.

He pushed the thought aside.

A small café sat just down the street, its warm lights spilling onto the sidewalk.

Perfect.

Ten minutes later, Ren sat at a corner table, laptop open, headphones on, trying to ignore the low hum of conversations around him.

"…Okay," he murmured. "This is different."

Audio interference detected. Background noise levels: elevated.

Ren glanced at the screen.

"Yeah," he said. "I can hear that."

He adjusted his mic slightly.

"Just… work with me here."

A brief pause.

…Adapting.

Ren smiled faintly.

"Good."

18:00.

He clicked Go Live.

The reaction was instant.

Viewer count climbed—

110… 140… 170.

Then—

Chat exploded.

NovaDrop: "WAIT WHERE ARE YOU???"

EmberVee: "THIS IS NOT YOUR ROOM 😭"

PixelSquad99: "IRL ARC????"

Ren laughed, glancing around briefly.

"Relax," he said. "Emergency setup."

EmberVee: "HE WENT OUTSIDE???"

NovaDrop: "THIS IS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT"

Ren shook his head, smiling.

"My internet was acting up, so… here we are."

Then—

LunaSky: "You actually went out."

His eyes flicked to it immediately.

"…Yeah," he said. "Had to."

A pause.

Then—

LunaSky: "You look different."

Ren blinked.

"…Different how?"

LunaSky: "Less… put together."

Chat exploded.

EmberVee: "LMAOOOOO"

NovaDrop: "SHE DID NOT JUST SAY THAT"

Ren leaned back, feigning offense.

"Wow. That's disrespectful."

LunaSky: "Not in a bad way."

A beat.

Then—

LunaSky: "Just more real."

Ren paused for a second.

Then smirked slightly.

"…Careful," he said. "You're starting to sound nice."

EmberVee: "OH???"

PixelSquad99: "SHE'S SWITCHING UP"

The game loaded.

And immediately—

Everything felt different.

The keyboard wasn't quite right.

The chair wasn't his.

Voices murmured in the background.

A cup clinked somewhere nearby.

Ren's movements were slightly slower.

Slightly off.

NovaDrop: "WAIT HE'S HUMAN AGAIN"

EmberVee: "NERFED 😭"

Ren laughed. "Alright, relax. I just need a second."

Astra: Performance deviation detected.

"…Yeah," Ren muttered. "I know."

He adjusted his grip.

Focused.

Adapted.

A close call.

He barely avoided a mistake.

Chat reacted instantly.

PixelSquad99: "THAT WAS CLOSE"

Then—

LunaSky: "You're hesitating again."

Ren exhaled.

"…Yeah," he admitted. "New setup."

A pause.

Then—

LunaSky: "You'll adjust."

Ren glanced at the message.

"…You sound confident."

LunaSky: "I am."

A small smile formed on his lips.

"…Alright then."

Minutes passed.

Slowly—

He got used to it.

The noise faded into the background.

The unfamiliar became manageable.

His movements sharpened.

Cleaner.

Faster.

Then—

A shadow passed by his table.

Someone walking behind him.

Too close.

Ren's eyes flicked up for just a second.

A stranger glanced at his screen.

Paused.

"…You streaming?" the guy asked casually.

Ren blinked.

"…Yeah."

The guy nodded. "That's cool."

Then walked off.

Chat exploded.

NovaDrop: "WAIT DID SOMEONE JUST TALK TO YOU???"

EmberVee: "IRL INTERACTION???"

PixelSquad99: "HE'S FAMOUS NOW 😭"

Ren laughed, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Relax. I'm not famous."

Then—

LunaSky: "You might be."

Ren paused.

"…That's a stretch."

LunaSky: "Is it?"

A beat.

Then—

LunaSky: "People are starting to notice you."

Ren didn't respond immediately.

Something about the way she said it—

Felt different.

More… personal.

Behind the scenes—

Astra updated.

Environmental unpredictability: increasing

External interaction: detected

A pause.

Then—

Control stability: reduced

The stream continued.

And despite everything—

It worked.

Maybe not perfectly.

But… naturally.

Near the end, Ren leaned back slightly.

"…Okay," he said. "That wasn't so bad."

NovaDrop: "BEST STREAM YET"

EmberVee: "OUTSIDE ARC IS PEAK"

Ren laughed.

"You guys just like chaos."

Then—

LunaSky: "I liked it."

He glanced at the message.

"…Yeah?"

LunaSky: "You felt less… distant."

Ren blinked.

"…Distant?"

A pause.

Then—

LunaSky: "Hard to explain."

He leaned back slightly, thinking.

Then smiled faintly.

"…Maybe I should do this more often."

A beat.

Then—

LunaSky: "You should."

The stream ended shortly after.

Ren packed up slowly, the café quieter now.

He stepped outside, the night air cool against his skin.

"…That was different," he murmured.

His phone buzzed.

He already knew who it was.

"You handled that better than I expected."

Ren smirked.

"Wow. Your expectations are low."

"A little."

He shook his head, smiling.

"Harsh."

A pause.

Then—

"You looked better like that."

Ren blinked.

"Like what?"

A few seconds passed.

Then—

"…Less perfect."

Ren leaned back slightly against the wall, staring at the screen.

"…Yeah," he murmured.

"I get that."

Behind him—

Astra's interface flickered to life.

Even without him looking.

User: LunaSky

Influence level: increasing

Behavioral variance: detected

A pause.

Longer this time.

Then—

Deviation from optimal patterns confirmed

The system processed.

Calculated.

Adjusted.

Quietly.

And for the first time—

It did not immediately return to idle.
