Chapter 24: The Resolve to Grow Stronger
Although Takeru couldn't follow the technical details of the conversation between Mizuki and Koushiro, that didn't stop him from being completely captivated by their performance.
"Brother Mizuki and Brother Koushiro are both so amazing!" he chirped, his eyes wide and shining with an almost star-like admiration.
"And Brother Taichi, too! You got as strong as Brother Mizuki so fast!"
"No, no, not really!" Taichi muttered, rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment.
Takeru's pure, unadulterated awe was so evident it made Yamato, standing off to the side, feel a sharp pang of jealousy. Takeru was his little brother. Why was he looking at everyone else with such reverence instead of him?
The bitter thought bubbled up and escaped his lips before he could stop it.
"Alright, how long are you two going to keep talking?" Yamato cut in, his voice laced with an impatient edge. "It's about time we ate, isn't it? Fighting is what the Digimon are for, right?"
He crossed his arms, his gaze sweeping over the group. "ultimately, we're just kids. What can a bunch of children possibly accomplish, no matter how hard we try?"
His words, though unpleasant, carried a harsh, obvious truth. They were human. They lacked the powerful bodies of Digimon, their strange and potent techniques. Even if they trained, even if they grew stronger, it wouldn't change the fundamental fact of their human fragility.
Yamato's cynical outburst was like a bucket of ice water, extinguishing the small, hopeful flame that had just begun to burn in their hearts. The restless energy in the air dissipated, and the children fell silent, their earlier excitement deflating.
However, there were a few exceptions.
"Yamato's right," Taichi said, nodding slowly. He let the admission hang in the air for a moment, surprising everyone.
But before Yamato could feel a sense of vindication, Taichi's tone sharpened with defiance. "But that doesn't mean I'm giving up on getting stronger. I won't." He turned, his gaze softening as it fell upon his younger sister. "Because I have to protect Kari."
His eyes then shifted to his partner. "Besides, Agumon is my friend. I can't just stand back and let my friend do all the fighting alone. That's not something I can do!"
"Taichi..." Agumon's reptilian eyes were filled with emotion. Listening to his partner's passionate declaration, the small dinosaur silently renewed his own vow to protect Taichi, no matter the cost.
Koushiro spoke up the moment Taichi finished. "I feel the same way. While we can certainly rely on our Digimon, we ultimately have to be strong ourselves. No one can guarantee that the enemy won't target us directly. Mizuki's leg injury is proof enough of that, isn't it?"
"Ah, well..."
Mizuki scratched his cheek, feeling a bit awkward as all eyes turned to him. He could feel LadyDevimon's gaze on him, a silent, pointed look of disapproval. He leaned closer to her, whispering, "Alright, alright, I promise. I won't be so reckless again."
"You promise? Pinky swear," she murmured back, her voice a low, possessive hum only he could hear.
"Mm, pinky swear."
Watching their quiet exchange, Koushiro realized Mizuki's injury might not have been from an enemy attack as he'd assumed. He coughed, a faint flush of embarrassment on his cheeks, but quickly pushed it aside, his expression turning serious once more.
"In any case, like Taichi, I refuse to give up on becoming stronger. Tentomon," he said, turning to his partner, "can I count on your help?"
"You don't even have to ask, Koushiro. I'll help you," Tentomon replied instantly. The insectoid Digimon had been silently observing his partner, his loyalty unwavering. He might not be as boisterous as Agumon or as nimble as some of the others, but his devotion to Koushiro was absolute. He had his own quiet way of standing by his partner's side.
Following the boys' lead, Kari stepped forward, her small voice clear and firm.
"I'm very happy that my brother wants to protect me," she began, looking directly at Taichi. "But... please forgive me, I can't just accept your protection without doing anything myself."
Her gaze was surprisingly mature, her expression serious. "I don't even have a Digimon partner yet. Doesn't that mean I need to become stronger more than anyone? Whether it's to protect myself... or to protect you, Brother."
"Kari... you..." Taichi stared at his sister's tender but determined face, his mouth opening and closing. In the end, he let out a long sigh, unable to find the words to refuse her.
Just then, Mizuki placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"Kari is right, Taichi. You should support her," he said gently. "This isn't the world we knew. None of us knows what we'll face out here. Even I can't guarantee with one hundred percent certainty that I can survive. The chance to become stronger is never a bad thing."
Taichi looked into Mizuki's eyes, their pale pink, gem-like clarity a result of his albinism, and saw nothing but sincere conviction. After a long moment of contemplation, he slowly nodded in agreement.
The conversation had rekindled the dying embers in the other children's hearts. Even Takeru, in a rare display of defiance, found the courage to contradict his older brother.
"Brother, everyone's right! It's not a bad thing for us to get stronger!" he insisted, his voice small but firm. "You agree too, don't you, Patamon? And you, Gabumon?"
"Mmm!" Patamon chirped in enthusiastic agreement.
Gabumon's reaction was far more subdued. He glanced at Takeru, then his gaze shifted to his own partner, Yamato. He could sense the conflict in Yamato, the reluctance to fully accept him. But even so, Gabumon would respect his partner's choices and protect him with everything he had.
Feeling Takeru's pleading gaze and Gabumon's silent, steady watch, Yamato's mind was a battlefield. He couldn't deny the logic in what Mizuki and the others had said. But his pride was a stubborn, bitter thing.
'Everyone here is just a kid,'he thought, his fists clenching at his sides.'So why are they so far ahead?'The mysterious Mizuki was one thing. But Taichi?'Why Taichi... he's just like the rest of us...'
The thought fueled a fire in his gut. Finally, after a long, tense silence, he made his decision.
"Alright, Takeru," he said, his voice tight. "If that's how it is, then let's all get stronger. Together."
"Yay! I knew you'd agree, Brother!" Takeru cheered, throwing himself at Yamato in a joyful hug.
Seeing that even the most difficult member of their group had finally come around, Taichi let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding.
"Then it's a promise, everyone," he declared, his voice ringing with renewed purpose. "Starting tomorrow, Digimon and humans, we're all going to train and become stronger together!"
"Yeah!" a chorus of determined voices shouted in unison.
Just as their cheers echoed through the clearing, Leomon returned, dragging a completely exhausted Ogremon behind him. He stared at the group of children, who were suddenly radiating an intense, fiery energy.
For some reason, a strange, ominous feeling crept over him as he listened to their vibrant shouts.
Leomon could only look on in utter bewilderment.
