Chapter 99: Darkness in Action & The Digimon's Contest
The Server Continent. Once the most expansive and vibrant region in the Digital World, it had been a land where countless Digimon established thriving, hopeful settlements.
All of that shattered the day the Nightmare Soldiers arrived.
Under their relentless invasion, more than half of the Server Continent was swallowed by a suffocating darkness. The once-lively landscapes were stripped of their color, replaced by a deathly, freezing silence. Though the Nightmare Soldiers had recently slowed their advance for reasons unknown, the entities lurking within the shadows still fixed their greedy, hollow gazes upon the continent's remaining untouched lands.
Ultimate Level Digimon—Myotismon.
He was one of those entities.
"So, that pathetic clown Etemon is dead now, is he?"
"Yes, King Myotismon! Dead as dirt!"
Impmon, a Rookie Level Digimon, knelt on the cold stone floor. He stared up at the imposing, aristocratic figure before him, his large eyes brimming with a frantic mix of worship and terror as he babbled out every scrap of information he had gathered.
"Right now, that entire region has fallen into absolute, leaderless chaos. The moment you lift a single finger, King Myotismon, you can sweep that massive territory right into your pocket! It will be effortless!"
"Oh? Impmon."
Myotismon looked down from his elevated throne. His crimson eyes narrowed, leaking a slow, freezing mockery. "Are you presuming to teach me how to conquer?"
"Eh?! I—"
Impmon froze. He caught the predatory glint flashing in the vampire's eyes. A cold sweat instantly broke out across his purple skin, his knees knocking together against the floor.
"I-I didn't mean that at all!" Impmon slammed his forehead against the stone, his voice cracking into a desperate squeak. "Spare my life, King Myotismon! This lowly one knows his mistake! Please!"
He truly worshipped the overwhelming power radiating from the lord of the castle, but he also knew exactly how casually cruel Myotismon could be. One wrong breath, one misplaced word, and his data would be erased from existence.
"..."
Myotismon watched the groveling, weeping Digimon without a single shift in his expression. His gaze remained entirely dead. To him, this supposedly loyal subordinate held absolutely zero value. In the end, weak creatures were merely future sustenance. Whether the food swore loyalty or not changed nothing about its flavor.
Only when Impmon's frantic pleading reduced to pathetic, breathless whimpers did Myotismon finally speak.
"Enough, you useless waste."
Impmon clamped his mouth shut, trembling violently.
"If you have the excess energy to disturb my peace with your groveling, you would be better off using that time to investigate the region properly."
"Eh!?" Impmon blinked, entirely stunned.
Myotismon sneered, a sound like grinding ice. "This is exactly why I call you a waste. Etemon may have been a buffoon, but he was still an Ultimate Level Digimon. He occupied a massive territory. He commanded an army. For an enemy to annihilate him so quickly proves they possess overwhelming strength, alongside forces that rival or exceed Etemon's own network."
A dark, calculating gleam flickered in Myotismon's eyes. Etemon's subordinates were weak, yes, but their sheer numbers meant clearing them out should have taken considerable time. It was highly unlikely that Etemon had simply grown overconfident and marched out alone to hand over his life.
Myotismon tapped a pale finger against his armrest. He shifted his gaze back to the shivering Rookie.
"I need you to uncover exactly what transpired in that wasteland., gather the scattered remnants of Etemon's forces. Bring in as many as you can. They are insignificant insects, but once their swarm grows large enough, they will serve a purpose."
"Yes! Right away!"
Impmon scrambled backward, bowing repeatedly until he slipped out through the heavy oak doors.
Once the chamber fell silent again, Myotismon leaned back, a deeply contemplative shadow crossing his pale features. He harbored another suspicion—one he had not voiced to the sniveling imp.
The entity capable of dismantling Etemon's empire so efficiently was highly likely to be the DigiDestined.
If there was even a fraction of a chance that Etemon had rushed out blindly, it would have been because he was provoked by those specific children. Following that logic, it meant the DigiDestined already commanded Ultimate Level combat power. Yet, prior to this, Myotismon's vast intelligence network had picked up absolutely nothing regarding their strength.
This meant the children had acquired Ultimate Level power almost immediately upon arriving on the Server Continent.
Such an explosive rate of growth... if his deduction was correct, they were a variable that needed to be eliminated.
'I must locate those children and measure their exact depth,'Myotismon thought, his fangs catching the dim candlelight.'I cannot allow them to interfere with my upcoming invasion of the real world.'
Having made his decision, Myotismon raised a hand, gesturing lazily toward the pitch-black corner of the room.
The shadows twisted. A ghostly, tattered cloak materialized from the darkness, floating silently into the dim light. A massive, gleaming scythe hung loosely from its skeletal grip.
Ultimate Level Digimon—Phantomon.
"King Myotismon..." the specter hissed, its voice echoing as if from the bottom of a dry well.
"Phantomon. Take your spectral subordinates. Sweep the territory formerly occupied by that clown Etemon. You are to hunt down the exact coordinates of the DigiDestined."
"Understood, King Myotismon." Phantomon bowed its hooded head, the heavy blade of its scythe reflecting a chilling silver glare. "Should I encounter these children... do you require me to harvest their lives?"
"...That will not be necessary. Locate them. Observe them. Then return to me with the intelligence."
"As you command..."
Though a distinct note of disappointment rasped in Phantomon's hollow voice, the grim reaper bowed loyally. Its tattered form dissolved back into the heavy shadows, leaving no trace behind.
With his pieces moved into position, Myotismon slowly closed his eyes, his mind already weaving the next layer of his grand design.
The entities lurking in the dark had already set their plans into motion.
However, the Digimon currently basking in the sun halfway across the continent remained entirely oblivious to the looming threat. Or rather, they simply had far more immediate, terrifying problems standing right in front of them.
"So, LadyDevimon. Let me get this straight. You're saying we are going to pick a fight with Big Sister Belle?"
Monochromon pointed a heavy, armored claw at the petite, unassuming figure standing across the open field, then pointed back at his own face. "Me? You want me to fight a Mega Level?"
"Oh, relax! It's totally fine! We have the numbers advantage!"
There is an old saying that alcohol lends courage to cowards, and LadyDevimon was living proof. Hours ago, while thoroughly intoxicated, she had boldly provoked Belle in front of the entire camp. Now, with the alcohol burning out of her system and cold, hard logic reclaiming her brain, a deep sense of impending doom was settling in her gut.
She swallowed hard, glancing left and right. At least she had dragged these three heavy-hitters into the mess with her. With their combined firepower, even against a Mega Level... maybe... possibly... they could survive without being beaten into raw data?
"..."
MetalGreymon (Blue) let out a heavy, metallic sigh. He could smell the regret radiating off his dark-winged colleague. Despite his exasperation with LadyDevimon's drunken antics, he felt no panic. Instead, the pale flames burning within his cybernetic chest flared with genuine anticipation. The chance to test his mettle against a Mega Level was a rare prize.
He wasn't the only one itching for a fight. The massive, serpentine Megadramon hovering beside him clicked his metallic jaws, his eyes locked onto the target.
"Big Sister Belle, our combat subroutines are primed. When do we commence?" Megadramon asked, his voice a deep, rumbling drone.
"..."
Belle twitched slightly at the title. Calling her 'big sister leader' again... She looked at the brutally honest, battle-hungry Megadramon. She felt a wave of helplessness, but no real anger. He was just a simpleton who only understood combat logic; there was no point in correcting him.
"Anytime you like," Belle replied, her voice calm and melodic. "However, I did promise Mizu that I wouldn't bully you all too severely. So—"
Belle closed her eyes. The ambient data in the air suddenly rushed toward her, swirling into a blinding vortex of holy light. Her petite form elongated, maturing rapidly within the golden cocoon. Eight brilliant white wings burst outward, scattering feathers of pure light across the grass.
Ultimate Level Digimon—Angewomon!
"I will restrict my Mega Level output," Belle said, her voice now carrying a mature, commanding resonance. She hovered slightly above the ground, gesturing gracefully toward the four massive beasts. "This form should make things fair."
"Then, let us begin. Show me your resolve."
"...Ultimate Level? She is actively looking down on us."
Though MetalGreymon (Blue) couldn't detect a single trace of actual malice or arrogance from Belle, his warrior's pride still stung. The moment the invisible tension snapped, he fired his thrusters, taking the absolute vanguard!
[Trident Arm!]
His cybernetic claw detached with a deafening blast, rocketing across the field on a heavy metal cable, aiming straight for Belle's chest.
"This tactic again? You MetalGreymon variants share remarkably predictable combat algorithms," Belle noted, her expression entirely serene.
She didn't retreat. She merely tilted her waist a fraction of an inch. The massive steel claw roared past her, missing by a hair's breadth. Without missing a beat, she raised her right hand, drawing back an invisible bowstring as holy lightning crackled into existence.
[Celestial Arrow!]
A streak of blinding white lightning tore through the air.
By the time MetalGreymon (Blue)'s optical sensors registered the flash, the arrow of pure energy was already inches from his face.
'Too fast!'
His conscious mind failed to process the speed, but his body—forged in the fires of countless brutal deathmatches—reacted on pure instinct. He violently twisted his massive frame, throwing his weight to the side just as the arrow scorched past his cheek armor.
He had dodged it. Yet, Belle didn't look the least bit disappointed. In fact, a distinctly mischievous smile curved her lips.
A split second later, a shrill shriek echoed from directly behind MetalGreymon (Blue).
"Gah! My tail! It burns!"
It was LadyDevimon. She had been hovering right in the arrow's trajectory. She crashed into the dirt, clutching her backside, her face twisted in a mixture of pain and absolute outrage.
Noticing the entire group staring at her, LadyDevimon pointed an accusing, trembling finger at the floating angel. "Big sister leader! That was a dirty sneak attack! Where is your dignity as a high-ranking holy Digimon?!"
Belle merely shrugged, her eight wings fluttering lazily. "Who told you I was acting as a high-ranking Mega? Look closely, I am merely an Ultimate Level Angewomon right now., the battle has already commenced. If you take a hit because you were daydreaming, you have no one to blame but yourself—"
Before Belle could finish her taunt, a massive shadow eclipsed the sun. Megadramon lunged from her blind spot, his terrifying metallic jaws snapping shut right where her head had been.
"!"
Caught slightly off guard by the silent, lethal ambush, Belle flared her wings, executing a sharp aerial barrel roll to evade the crushing bite. She immediately raised her hand to counter, drawing another arrow of light.
But out of the corner of her eye, a familiar dull silver glint caught the sunlight.
She threw herself backward, narrowly avoiding the returning sweep of MetalGreymon (Blue)'s retracted Trident Arm.
"The Trident Arm again?" Belle murmured, stabilizing her flight.
"Big Sister Belle, evasive maneuvers!" Megadramon's deep voice boomed.
[Genocide Attack!]
Even as he shouted the warning, Megadramon's chest hatches blew open. A barrage of dark energy missiles erupted from below, catching Belle perfectly in the brief window of her recovery animation. The missiles slammed into her, detonating in a massive, blooming explosion of fire and smoke high in the sky.
Down below, LadyDevimon finally scrambled to her feet. She rubbed her scorched backside and pumped a fist in the air, a vindictive grin spreading across her face.
"Hah! Serves you right for sealing your Mega power! How does that setback taste, Big Sister Belle?!"
"..."
The smoke billowed in the sky. No movement came from within the dark cloud. It looked as though Belle had actually been knocked out by the combined assault.
But down on the sidelines, Mizuki simply smiled. He slowly raised a microphone to his lips.
A heavy, driving guitar riff suddenly blasted across the battlefield, the melody instantly igniting the restless, aggressive data in the air.
"Lord Mizuki!"
"Lord Mizuki!"
"Lord Mizuki!"
The spectating Digimon roared in unison, their cheers shaking the ground. Feeding off their energy, Mizuki's Digi-Soul flared, and he belted out the lyrics, his voice carrying an empowering, electric weight—
[Anger born from fragile bones, the wicked break their iron chains!]
[Stride into the choking ash, shadows wake as golden blood floods the soul!]
[Burn, let the divine kingdom burn! Paradise falls to ruin, haha!]
"Is this... the music of our victory?" LadyDevimon gasped, feeling an incredible surge of power flooding her veins. She felt as though she had already reached the absolute peak of her strength.
MetalGreymon (Blue) shot her a flat, exasperated look. 'If my memory banks are functioning correctly, you haven't actually done anything yet except get shot in the rear.'
Before he could voice his complaint, a calm, melodic voice drifted down from the billowing smoke above.
"Do you honestly believe Mizu is singing that song for you?"
—!
'Danger!'
The moment MetalGreymon (Blue) heard Belle's voice, his survival instincts screamed.
Mizuki: [Drink deep of the bitter ash, watch the dregs scatter, collapse, and sink!]
[Faces fall away, the evil beasts gallop, vying to tear down the divine!]
[Rip through, tear apart everything, even the night shall kneel before me!]
MetalGreymon (Blue) hadn't fully retracted his Trident Arm for a reason. This was the moment! He whipped his massive body around, using the heavy metal cable to violently bind the still-distracted LadyDevimon and Monochromon. At the exact same moment, the missile silos on his chest glowed with blinding heat!
[Giga Destroyer!]
[Heaven's Charm!]
Just as MetalGreymon's heavy ordnance launched, a massive, cross-shaped blast of holy purple light erupted from the smoke screen, covering an impossibly wide area! Belle hadn't been incapacitated at all; she had used the cover of Megadramon's attack to charge her ultimate technique!
But what happened next defied all expectations.
MetalGreymon (Blue)'s missiles detonated. But they didn't fly toward the descending Heaven's Charm. He detonated them directly at his own feet!
The sheer kinetic force of the point-blank explosion acted as a massive thruster. The shockwave violently hurled MetalGreymon (Blue) backward, blasting him entirely out of the Heaven's Charm's lethal radius!
Because he had bound his teammates with his cable, the blast dragged the utterly bewildered LadyDevimon, Monochromon, and Megadramon out of the kill zone alongside him!
"You three slackers!" MetalGreymon (Blue) roared over the ringing in his audio receptors. "It is time to get serious!"
Using the remaining momentum of the blast, he swung his massive mechanical arm, violently hurling Monochromon and LadyDevimon straight up into the sky, directly toward Belle!
"This guy is a complete lunatic!" Monochromon roared, the wind tearing at his face as he was launched like a cannonball into the stratosphere.
But as he looked up at the glowing angel waiting above, a fierce, unyielding light ignited in his eyes.
"But I was the one who dragged him into this mess. So let's do this!"
A blinding pillar of digivolution light erupted from Monochromon's body. His flesh began to boil and strip away, his skeletal structure expanding at a terrifying, visible rate—
Mizuki: [Madness dyes the intent!]
[Spreading through the pain!]
In the span of a single heartbeat, the heavy dinosaur vanished, replaced by a colossal, nightmarish construct of bone and dark energy. He had reclaimed his Ultimate form mid-flight!
SkullGreymon!
"ROAR!!!"
His deafening, bone-rattling bellow shattered the clouds, syncing perfectly with the explosive climax of Mizuki's song!
Mizuki: [White night, the blazing sun burns, watch as I alone burst into a solar flare!]
[Calamitous flames run wild, watch as the proud sun fearlessly collapses!]
Though his massive, skeletal frame was entirely unsuited for aerial combat, SkullGreymon weaponized his sheer mass. He twisted his spine, thrashing wildly as he unleashed a frantic, overwhelming barrage of bone projectiles at Belle!
But how could an entity as precise as Belle be struck by blind rage?
Her holy figure became a blur of afterimages. She wove through the storm of bone and dark fire with terrifying elegance, the absolute antithesis of SkullGreymon's madness.
Having effortlessly bypassed the skeletal giant, Belle ignored his falling form. She spun mid-air, drawing her bow and aiming straight up.
Mizuki: [The more I am shattered, the more I must look down!]
[Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh~]
LadyDevimon, still riding the upward momentum of the throw, realized with a jolt of panic that Belle's reaction speed was monstrous. Forced to abandon her plan of charging a ranged attack, she manifested her dark blade, gripping the LadyDevimon's Sword with both hands as she dive-bombed the angel!
"Celestial Arrow!" Belle called out, a fresh bolt of holy lightning condensing in her grip.
A wild thrill spiked in LadyDevimon's chest. 'My downward velocity makes me faster! If she tries to shoot that arrow, my blade will pierce her first! Then the boys on the ground can finish her off!'
She could see MetalGreymon (Blue) and Megadramon charging their weapons below. Victory was inches away.
But Belle didn't fire the arrow.
Instead, she tightened her grip on the shaft of pure lightning. As LadyDevimon swung her dark blade down, Belle swung the arrow like a glowing longsword, parrying the heavy strike with a deafening clash of holy and dark energy!
"Big Sister Belle!" LadyDevimon shrieked, struggling against the blade lock. "What kind of Celestial Arrow is that?!"
Belle offered a sly, infuriatingly perfect smile. "Hmm? Is there a flaw in my nomenclature? It is a Celestial 'Sword' Arrow."
"Dammit! You're supposed to be a dignified Holy Digimon! This is just street brawling!"
Having lost her momentum and the element of surprise, LadyDevimon was instantly overwhelmed. Belle's strikes were too fast, too heavy, relentlessly battering the dark angel backward.
Mizuki: [Solar flare, fearless collapse!]
[The more I am shattered!]
[The more I must look down!]
With a final, elegant spin, Belle drove the shaft of her arrow into LadyDevimon's guard, violently swatting her out of the sky.
BOOM!
LadyDevimon crashed into the earth, throwing up a massive plume of dirt.
'That is exactly why I said,'Belle thought, her eyes tracking the four battered Digimon below.'Mizu's song is not meant for you.'
She slowly raised her bow. She didn't draw a single arrow. She drew the ambient light of the entire battlefield.
"Are you ready?" Belle's voice echoed, carrying a strange, resonant weight. "The grand finale is arriving."
Every ounce of data in Belle's body flared. The sky above her turned blindingly white.
[Celestial Arrow!]
This time, she fired. But it wasn't a single projectile. MetalGreymon (Blue) and the others stared up in absolute horror. They wouldn't call this an arrow. They would call it an extinction event.
Meteors of holy light filled the sky, raining down in a catastrophic deluge. It looked as though the heavens themselves were collapsing upon them. Belle had used a high-level data manipulation technique, duplicating her attack thousands of times over.
Every possible avenue of retreat was sealed by the falling stars.
'Is this it? Did we lose?'
The thought echoed simultaneously through the minds of the four bruised and battered Digimon.
Then, Mizuki's voice cut through the roaring descent of the meteors—
[Glazed glass turns to flying ash, yet it must pierce the dark night!]
[The cries pull at the remaining flames, the thirst for freedom never ceases!]
[Silence this world, the doomsday revelry is eternal!]
[Until the old memories of the past close their eyes for me...]
The lyrics slammed into their core programming. In that moment, they saw flashes of their past. They remembered the pathetic, weak creatures they used to be, drifting aimlessly, bowing their heads to stronger predators just to survive another day. They remembered the bitter taste of their own crushed dignity.
Now, they had been given a second chance. They had found a place where they belonged. How could they possibly surrender so easily?
How could they ever let themselves crawl back into the mud of their past?!
Their Digi-Cores burned. The fighting spirit they thought exhausted erupted into a raging inferno!
[Tear apart, golden blood blooms in fury, embrace me, burst in brilliance!]
[Thirty million revolutions, echoing through this cycle of sin!]
[The chains are broken, I move toward your side!]
[Oh oh oh oh oh oh yeah!!]
MetalGreymon (Blue), relentless as ever, was the first to charge directly into the apocalyptic rain of light!
He fired his thrusters to the absolute maximum, swinging his heavy metal cable like a colossal whip. He used the sheer mass of his Trident Arm to violently smash apart the falling arrows, physically tearing a jagged hole through the impenetrable barrage!
"The path is open!" MetalGreymon (Blue) roared, his armor scorching under the holy heat. "Go!!!"
Grounded by his skeletal mass, SkullGreymon planted his feet and fired every ounce of dark energy he possessed into the sky, working in tandem with MetalGreymon to keep the breach from collapsing!
No words were needed. Their synchronized actions spoke volumes.
LadyDevimon understood instantly. She pushed off the shattered earth, her dark wings beating furiously. She poured every last drop of her data into her flight, rocketing straight up the narrow tunnel her comrades had carved through the falling stars. She flew directly toward the despair-inducing figure of the angel above.
In this singular moment, they had forgotten this was merely a sparring match. To them, this was a trial. A war against their own past weakness.
"..."
Shielded by the absolute sacrifice of her team, LadyDevimon finally broke through the barrage, arriving face-to-face with Belle once more.
Suddenly, a massive shadow loomed beside her. MetalGreymon (Blue) had followed her up. His armor was melted, his flesh pierced by countless arrows, yet his body burned with a terrifying, pale fire.
[Revenge Flame!]
His optical sensors glowed with an unyielding, absolute defiance. Down below, SkullGreymon and Megadramon had finally collapsed under the sheer weight of the holy rain, but their will had carried these two to the summit.
The two sides hovered in the sky, facing each other.
No more words.
They clashed!
[Until the end, this body is Saving Flames!]
[Forging swords at dawn, Re-creation, Unbreakable belief!]
"Trident Arm!"
MetalGreymon (Blue) struck first! His heavy claw, superheated by his own Revenge Flame, punched straight at Belle's chest!
Belle knew the timing of this attack perfectly. She didn't even brace herself; she simply drifted backward, letting the lethal claw pass harmlessly by.
But LadyDevimon was waiting for that exact evasion! She gripped her dark blade with both hands and thrust it violently toward Belle's exposed flank!
Belle spun, using the shaft of her Celestial Arrow to deflect the demonic sword. Simultaneously, her free hand glowed with blinding purple energy, slamming a point-blank [Heaven's Charm] directly into MetalGreymon (Blue)'s massive chest!
BOOM!!!
Though Belle was actively holding back the lethal Vaccine-versus-Virus attribute advantage, MetalGreymon (Blue) was already pushed far beyond his limits. The blast shattered his remaining armor, and his colossal body finally began to plummet from the sky.
Yet, even as he fell, his optical sensor flashed. With his absolute last breath of consciousness, he violently yanked his cable!
The Trident Arm whipped backward!
Belle, entirely focused on LadyDevimon, was caught off guard. The heavy steel cable lashed across her back, staggering her forward.
It was a microscopic opening. But it was all LadyDevimon needed!
The momentum shifted in a fraction of a second!
[Dawn Star Sky, reincarnation, destiny, nothingness!]
[Bow down to me!]
Could LadyDevimon actually win?
No one knew. But down on the ground, every single Digimon watching the sky held their breath, desperately hoping that the dark angel carrying the weight of her fallen comrades could seize this impossible victory.
[Bow down to me!]
One strike. A parry. Another strike. A deflection. The high-speed melee raged, but LadyDevimon could feel her data fraying. Her limbs felt like lead.
[Bow down to me!]
The gap in their base power was simply too vast. Even with the opening, LadyDevimon's strikes were growing slower, her form degrading.
[Bow down to me!]
But her eyes burned with a feral light. She refused to stop!
[Bow down to me!]
With a final, agonizing scream, LadyDevimon poured the very last dregs of her life force into her blade. She lunged, her speed suddenly spiking, and thrust her sword straight through Belle's flawless defense!
[To Me!]
CRACK.
The LadyDevimon's Sword struck true, but the sheer density of Belle's holy data was too much. The dark blade shattered into a million pieces of glittering black code, completely unable to bear the burden of the impact.
'I... I lost?'
Her momentum broken, LadyDevimon was swatted away by a gentle but firm pulse of holy light. As she began to free-fall toward the earth, she stared up at the pristine angel in bitter frustration.
But then, her eyes widened.
Right across Belle's flawless porcelain cheek, a thin, distinct scratch leaked a few pixels of golden data.
Just as LadyDevimon registered the sight, Mizuki belted out the final, roaring lyric of his soul—
[BOW—DOWN—TO—ME!]
"..."
Belle hovered in the sky, the wind ruffling her golden hair. She raised a delicate finger, gently touching the scratch on her cheek. A soft glow pulsed, and the wound instantly vanished, returning her skin to perfect smoothness.
But the casual, playful ease that had dominated her expression the entire match was gone. It was replaced by a look of deep, genuine respect.
"You did exceptionally well," Belle whispered to the falling figure. "I acknowledge your strength... I say."
"Is that... so..."
A faint, exhausted smile touched LadyDevimon's lips as the wind rushed past her ears. 'That's really... great...'
Her eyes fluttered shut, and before she even hit the ground, she slipped into a deep, peaceful unconsciousness.
