Chapter 184 - digivolution Failed?

Chapter 184: digivolution Failed?

"Although I didn't really want to do this yet, there's no other way now."

Mimi's voice rang out, clear and resolute. Under the watchful gazes of her companions, she reached up and unclasped the pendant resting against her collarbone. She held the Crest high, its surface catching the dim ambient light of the cavern.

"Palmon, let everyone see our growth!"

"Yes! Mimi!" Palmon responded, her childish voice ringing with absolute conviction. The little plant Digimon planted her root-like feet firmly on the ground, her tender green face set in an expression of unwavering determination.

The very next second, a blinding pillar of evolutionary light erupted from the ground, completely swallowing her small frame.

"Palmon Digivolve to..."

The light expanded, stretching upward into a towering, spiky silhouette.

"...Togemon!"

But the radiant glow did not fade. The process was far from over.

"Togemon, Super Digivolve!" Mimi called out, her voice echoing through the cavernous space.

When a heart of pure innocence blossomed with radiant light, the surrounding natural energy surged forward, converging to nurture a true miracle of life.

First, the massive white flower resting atop Togemon's head bloomed outward, its petals stretching wide before bursting into countless glowing fragments. These ethereal petals danced through the air, swirling in a captivating vortex. The underground space, previously choked by dimness and the lingering stench of death, was suddenly washed clean. A fresh, vibrant breath of life and nature swept through the cavern, carrying the sweet scent of spring.

However, this beautiful display shifted rapidly. The scattered petals reversed their flight, swirling back into the center of the light to weave themselves together. In the blink of an eye, they formed a massive, tightly closed bright red flower bud.

A heavy, pulsing rhythm echoed from within the crimson petals. Almost every child and Digimon present could feel the sheer density of the life force incubating inside that bud. It beat like a massive heart. Mimi stared at the glowing flora, her hands clasped tightly against her chest, her eyes shining with overwhelming anticipation.

After all, compared to Togemon's hulking, spiky physique, this red flower bud was remarkably compact. To Mimi, this meant only one thing: her partner's Ultimate form would finally shed that clumsy, giant cactus aesthetic. A wide, brilliant smile broke across Mimi's face. She bounced lightly on her heels, so excited she nearly cheered aloud.

Yet, the grand spectacle abruptly halted. The dazzling light faded away, leaving only the giant red bud resting quietly on the stone floor. It did not bloom. It did not move. It simply remained tightly shut, as if frozen in time.

The breathless anticipation hanging over the group shattered into awkward silence. The children exchanged bewildered glances, their expressions twisting into masks of pure confusion.

Taichi leaned over, instinctively nudging Izzy's shoulder. "Izzy, what is going on?" he whispered, keeping his eyes fixed on the motionless plant. "Did Palmon finish Digivolving?"

"I... I do not know." Izzy adjusted his grip on his laptop, his brow furrowing deeply. Digivolution almost always occurred in a single, explosive instant. Facing this stagnant bud, the resident genius found himself entirely at a loss.

Sora crouched down, turning to her own partner. "Biyomon, is this Palmon's Ultimate form?"

"Biyomon does not know." The pink bird tilted her head, her large blue eyes blinking in total bewilderment. "At least, I have never seen a Digimon that looks like a giant sleeping flower."

Her feathery shoulders drooped. "I am sorry, Sora..."

Seeing her partner's crestfallen expression at failing to provide an answer, Sora immediately shifted her attention away from the peculiar flower bud. She reached out, gently stroking the bird's head feathers to comfort her.

"It is perfectly fine, Biyomon." Sora offered a warm, reassuring smile. "I am not blaming you at all. Biyomon is the best, no matter what."

Taichi cast a subtle, sideways glance at Sora as she coddled her partner. 'Sora really is acting more and more like a mother every day,' he mused silently, a faint, amused smirk touching his lips before he turned his focus back to the front.

By now, Mimi's initial excitement had dissolved into genuine worry. She jogged over to the massive red bud, circling it with hesitant steps as she inspected the smooth, unmoving petals.

"Palmon? Palmon, are you in there? Have you finished Digivolving?"

She leaned in close, her voice trembling slightly. "Please do not scare me like this. Say something. Palmon?"

Mimi reached out, her knuckles gently tapping against the thick, fleshy exterior of the bud.

Silence. Not a single rustle or muffled voice answered her plea.

Panic began to bubble in her chest. Completely at a loss, Mimi whipped around, her pleading gaze locking onto the group's resident tech expert.

"Izzy! Please, you have to come check on Palmon!"

"Eh? Me?" Izzy blinked, pointing a finger at his own chest. Before he could utter another word of protest, a pair of hands shoved him squarely in the back. Taichi grinned, pushing the boy forward into the spotlight.

Izzy stumbled a few steps, catching his balance. He shot a helpless, exasperated glare over his shoulder at his grinning friend. "Taichi, you really..." He let out a long, defeated sigh. Straightening his posture, he swiftly regained his usual calm, analytical demeanor and hurried over to Mimi's side.

"Izzy, hurry! Look at it, what is wrong with her?" The moment he was within reach, Mimi grabbed his wrist, her grip surprisingly tight with anxiety.

"Do not rush, do not rush, I will check it right now..." Izzy stammered, a faint flush of pink dusting his cheeks at the sudden physical contact. He cleared his throat, forcing his flustered emotions back down.

Flipping open his yellow laptop, his fingers began to fly across the keyboard. He aimed the device's built-in scanner toward the massive flower bud, using his custom software to analyze the data structure within.

Lines of code cascaded down the screen. Izzy's eyes narrowed. "Hmm... strange..."

"Strange? What do you mean strange? Is something wrong?" Mimi's heart skipped a painful beat, her hands flying to her mouth.

"Do not be nervous, Mimi." Izzy offered a quick, pacifying glance to calm his frantic companion before returning his intense focus to the screen.

"Based on my analysis, there is barely any residual Digimon data inside this flower bud at all." He tapped a few more keys, bringing up a thermal and data-density overlay. "In other words... whatever is inside there, it is not your Palmon."

"It is not Palmon?!" Mimi's voice pitched an octave higher. She spun around, frantically scanning the dim cavern. "Then where did she go?!"

"About that..." Izzy muttered, his fingers continuing their rapid dance across the keys. A detailed topographic floor plan of the underground space materialized on his monitor. Tiny glowing dots appeared on the grid, acting as identity markers for everyone present.

As Izzy matched the data signatures to the physical locations, his expression twisted into a look of deep oddity.

He slowly lowered the laptop, his eyes darting from the screen to the space directly behind the panicked girl. "After running a full scan of this area, I found... Mimi, your partner seems to have been standing directly behind you this entire time."

"Ah?! Behind me?!"

Mimi froze. Before she could even pivot on her heel, a voice drifted over her shoulder.

It was a voice brimming with vibrant youth and playful liveliness. Though the pitch and cadence were entirely different, the underlying essence—the warm, sunny core of the tone—was unmistakably Palmon's.

Or rather, it sounded exactly like a grown-up Palmon.

"Izzy, why did you have to expose me so quickly?" the voice pouted, carrying a melodic, teasing lilt. "Mmm, I really wanted to see Mimi's nervous face for just a little bit longer."

"Pa—l—mon!"

Realization crashed over Mimi like a bucket of cold water. Her worry instantly evaporated, replaced by the stinging indignity of having been thoroughly pranked.

Exasperated, she spun around, fully prepared to deliver a stern scolding to her mischievous partner. But the words died in her throat. The figure standing in the dim light completely stole her breath, freezing her in place.

Her eyes widened, taking in the sight before her. "You are... Palmon?"

"That is right!" The figure giggled, doing a graceful, mid-air twirl. "How about it, Mimi? Am I super cute now?"

The Digimon floating before her possessed the delicate, slender appearance of a human girl—or more accurately, a sprite pulled straight from the pages of a classic fairy tale. She wore a dress woven from vibrant green leaves and a blooming pink flower atop her head. Two pairs of translucent, leafy wings fluttered rapidly at her back, allowing her to glide through the air and gracefully circle around her stunned partner.

Compared to the dangerous, dark allure of LadyDevimon, or the blinding, divine sanctity of Angewomon, this Digimon possessed a completely different kind of beauty. Hers was an enchanting, dreamlike quality—the pure, untainted whimsy of a woodland fairy.

also, as she danced through the air with agile, weightless movements, a refreshing, sweet fragrance trailed behind her. It smelled of morning dew and blooming spring gardens, instantly washing away the cavern's gloom and lifting the spirits of everyone present.

She hovered to a stop right in front of Mimi's face, a bright, infectious smile lighting up her features. "Though, I do have to remind you, Mimi... I am not Palmon anymore."

She curtsied mid-air, her leafy skirt flaring out elegantly. "Allow me to introduce myself."

The fairy-tale sprite offered Mimi a playful, exaggerated wink.

"My name is Lillymon. I am an Ultimate level Digimon." She reached out, gently taking Mimi's hands in her own. "And I am your partner!"
