Chapter 16 - The Next Level

The training field was quiet again.

But the pressure remained.

The instructor looked at Leo and Rin. "You've both improved. Now we move to the next level."

Ray crossed his arms. "That doesn't sound good."

"It isn't," the instructor replied.

He raised his hand.

A new magic circle appeared.

Different from before.

More complex.

More dense.

"…What is that?" Rin asked.

"A compressed field," the instructor said. "Inside it, mana becomes unstable."

Leo's eyes focused. "…So control becomes harder."

"Exactly."

The circle expanded.

Covering the entire training area.

The air changed instantly.

Heavy.

Distorted.

Ray frowned. "Yeah, I don't like this at all."

Rin raised her hand.

A simple light spell—

It flickered.

Shook.

Almost broke.

"…My control is dropping," she said.

Leo tested it.

Formed a small structure.

It was stable—

But required more effort.

"…The flow is disrupted," he said.

The instructor nodded.

"Your task is simple," he said. "Maintain your magic under pressure."

No attacks.

No movement.

Just control.

But—

This was harder than anything before.

Rin focused.

Her light formed again.

Shaking slightly.

She adjusted.

Reduced output.

Stabilized it.

"…Stay steady," she whispered.

Ray tried next.

His wind spell burst—

Then collapsed instantly.

"…Okay, nope."

He tried again.

Slower.

Smaller.

This time—

It held.

Barely.

Leo closed his eyes.

He didn't rush.

Didn't force it.

He observed the field.

The distortion.

The interference.

"…It's not random," he said quietly.

Rin glanced at him. "…What do you mean?"

Leo opened his eyes.

"…There's a pattern."

The instructor didn't interrupt.

Leo raised his hand.

Formed a structure—

But adjusted it differently.

Not resisting the distortion—

Following it.

The spell stabilized instantly.

Perfect.

Rin's eyes widened.

"…You adapted to it?"

Leo nodded.

"…You don't fight the field."

"…You align with it."

Rin understood immediately.

She changed her approach.

Adjusted her flow.

Reduced resistance.

Her spell stabilized.

Cleaner than before.

"…I see it now," she said.

Ray blinked. "Wait, slow down—"

His spell broke again.

"…Yeah, I don't see it."

The instructor watched them.

"…Good."

A short pause.

Then—

He raised his hand again.

The pressure increased.

Even heavier.

Rin's spell shook again.

She tightened her focus.

"…Not yet…"

Leo adjusted once more.

His control remained steady.

"…Increase adaptation," he said.

Rin followed.

Her spell stabilized again.

Ray gritted his teeth.

"…Why is this so hard…"

But he didn't stop trying.

Minutes passed.

Slow.

Heavy.

Every second required focus.

Every mistake broke the spell.

Finally—

The instructor lowered his hand.

The field disappeared.

The pressure vanished instantly.

Ray dropped to the ground. "Yeah… I'm done."

Rin lowered her hand slowly.

Breathing controlled.

"…That was harder than the fight."

Leo nodded.

"…But more important."

The instructor stepped forward.

"…You're starting to understand real control."

He looked at Leo.

"…And you're starting to go beyond it."

Leo didn't respond.

But his eyes were sharper than before.

Rin looked at her hand.

Then at Leo.

No frustration.

No doubt.

Just determination.

"…Next time," she said, "I won't need to follow you."

Leo replied calmly.

"…Then reach it first."

Ray laughed weakly. "Or maybe let me catch up first…"

No one answered.

But one thing was clear.

Their training—

Had only just begun.
