As they stepped into the Violet Gym, they were greeted by an enormous circular battle hall with an astonishingly high ceiling.
The transparent dome overhead allowed sunlight to pour down unobstructed, while the vast open sky served as the perfect backdrop, fully showcasing the Flying type Gym's unique atmosphere.
The battlefield itself was a standard rocky arena, but devices around the edges simulated air currents, occasionally stirring powerful gusts of wind across the field.
The Gym Leader, Falkner, was already standing at one end of the battlefield. He had changed into a more streamlined martial arts uniform, his sharp gaze resembling that of a hunting hawk.
Several Gym apprentices and Trainers who had come to watch sat in the audience stands. Misty and Brock were among them, observing nervously yet expectantly.
Standing at the edge of the field, the referee loudly announced the rules:
"The official Gym battle between Violet Gym Leader Falkner and the challenger Ash from Pallet Town will now begin! This will be a three-on-three battle with a Gym Badge at stake! Only the challenger may switch Pokémon freely! The battle will end when all three Pokémon on one side are unable to battle!"
"I've finally been waiting for this moment, Ash!" Falkner's voice echoed throughout the arena, filled with the bold confidence unique to Flying type Trainers. "Show me just how high you and your Pokémon can soar through the skies! My first Pokémon is this one! Hoothoot, let's go!"
A sharp-eyed owl Pokémon with a large tuft on its head, Hoothoot, appeared on the battlefield with a cry of "Hoo hoo!" as it lightly flapped its wings, adjusting to the airflow within the arena.
"We have the type advantage!" Ash's eyes sharpened without a moment's hesitation. "Pikachu, I'm counting on you for the first match!"
"Pika!" Pikachu lightly leapt from Ash's shoulder onto the battlefield. Sparks crackled from its cheeks as its fighting spirit surged.
"Battle begin!"
"Hoothoot, use Hypnosis!" Falkner launched the first attack immediately, trying to seize control of the battle.
A strange crimson glow appeared in Hoothoot's eyes as invisible psychic waves spread toward Pikachu.
"Pikachu, close your eyes and dodge with Quick Attack!" Ash knew how troublesome Hypnosis could be and responded instantly.
Closing its eyes, Pikachu relied entirely on Ash's commands and its awareness of the battlefield. It transformed into a streak of white light, skillfully slipping past the range of Hypnosis while rapidly closing the distance between itself and Hoothoot.
"What a fast reaction!" Falkner was inwardly startled, but he quickly responded. "Hoothoot, use Peck!"
Hoothoot's sharp beak glowed white as it lunged toward the approaching Pikachu.
"Pikachu, time it carefully and use Electro Ball!"
Just as Hoothoot's beak was about to strike, Pikachu suddenly slammed to a halt. Its tail rapidly condensed a tightly compressed sphere of electricity before firing it point-blank at Hoothoot!
Boom!
The Electro Ball exploded with devastating effect. Hoothoot was blasted backward, its feathers scorched black as it cried out in pain.
"Hoothoot, endure it and use Wing Attack!"
Struggling to steady itself, Hoothoot's wings glowed white as it charged toward Pikachu once more.
"It's over! Pikachu, Thunderbolt!"
Ash gave his opponent no chance to breathe. Pikachu gathered all of its electrical power as dazzling golden lightning burst forth like raging serpents, instantly swallowing the approaching Hoothoot!
Boom!
When the electricity faded, Hoothoot collapsed onto the ground twitching, its eyes spiraling.
"Hoothoot is unable to battle! Pikachu wins!"
"Nice job, Pikachu!" Ash pumped his fist in celebration. A perfect start!
As Falkner recalled Hoothoot, there was little disappointment on his face. Instead, his fighting spirit only intensified.
"A beautiful rushdown strategy! Electric types really are the natural enemies of Flying types. Then let's see how you handle this! Go, Dodrio!"
A flash of light appeared, and a Pokémon with three heads, six eyes, and incredibly powerful legs emerged onto the battlefield: Dodrio. All three heads screeched noisily at once, radiating fierce aggression.
Seeing this, Ash decisively called out, "Pikachu, come back and rest!"
Pikachu obediently hopped back to Ash's side to await further orders.
"Now it's your turn!" Ash threw another Poké Ball. "Charizard, I choose you!"
"ROAAAR!!!"
A thunderous dragon roar echoed throughout the Gym as Charizard descended onto the battlefield. The scorching heat emanating from its powerful body caused the air itself to distort slightly. It looked down arrogantly at Dodrio while the flames on its tail burned even more fiercely.
"Charizard, huh? Now that's an exciting opponent!" Falkner's eyes lit up. "Dodrio, show them our jumping power! Use Quick Attack!"
All three of Dodrio's heads locked onto their target simultaneously. Its powerful legs exploded with force as it launched itself high into the air like a cannonball, cloaked in white light as it hurtled toward Charizard at incredible speed!
Its jumping power was truly astonishing, nearly reaching the height of the arena's dome ceiling.
"Charizard, fly up and dodge it!" Ash responded calmly.
Charizard's massive wings spread wide. With a single powerful flap, it rose gracefully into the air, effortlessly avoiding Dodrio's attack.
Hovering high above the battlefield, it looked down at Dodrio after it landed back on the ground.
"Dodrio, use Tri Attack continuously!" Falkner commanded.
All three of Dodrio's heads opened their beaks at the same time, each gathering a different elemental energy: ice, fire, and electricity. The three energies fused into a twisted beam containing all three powers as it shot toward the airborne Charizard!
"Charizard, counter it with Flamethrower!"
Charizard opened its mouth and unleashed a blazing pillar of fire. The Flamethrower violently collided with the Tri Attack beam in midair!
Boom!
The clashing energies exploded instantly, scattering flames everywhere while turbulent air currents spiraled wildly through the arena.
"Now's our chance! Dodrio, jump up and use Drill Peck!" Falkner seized the moment created by the smoke and chaotic airflow from the explosion.
Dodrio leapt upward once again with all its strength. Its entire body spun at high speed like a giant drill as it pierced toward Charizard in the sky!
"Charizard, don't take it head-on! Create some distance, then use Dragon Breath!"
Charizard reacted instantly, flying backward to widen the gap between itself and the incoming Dodrio while simultaneously exhaling a dragon-powered breath attack from its mouth!
The purple Dragon Breath engulfed Dodrio. While the damage itself was not especially high, it successfully interrupted Dodrio's attack and inflicted paralysis, causing its movements to become sluggish.
"This is bad! It's paralyzed!" Falkner frowned.
"Great chance! Charizard, finish it! Iron Tail!"
Charizard let out a mighty roar and dove downward. Its tail instantly became coated in metallic luster like a heavy steel whip. Using the force of its descent, it viciously slammed the Iron Tail directly into Dodrio, which could no longer dodge properly due to paralysis!
Bang!
Dodrio crashed heavily onto the battlefield and lost the ability to fight.
"Dodrio is unable to battle! Charizard wins!"
"So strong! Ash already won two matches in a row!" Misty shouted excitedly from the stands.
Brock nodded in praise. "Charizard's control of the skies was incredible. It never gave Dodrio the chance to fully utilize its jumping advantage."
Falkner took a deep breath as he recalled Dodrio.
A serious yet excited expression appeared on his face. Even though he had already lost two matches, his strongest ace had yet to appear.
"Ash, you and your Charizard truly live up to your reputation. That level of aerial control is astonishing," Falkner said sincerely. Then he pulled out his final Poké Ball, his eyes becoming incredibly sharp. "But the real Flying type battle is only beginning now! Let me show you the bond between my partner and me as we soar through the skies together! My ace, go! Pidgeot!"
"Pidgeooooot!!!"
Accompanied by a high-pitched, powerful cry, Falkner's Pidgeot appeared high above the battlefield.
Its body was strong and well-built, its feathers sleek and glossy. Its eyes were sharp as blades, and every flap of its wings generated powerful gusts of wind. It carried the overwhelming presence worthy of a Gym Leader's ace Pokémon!
"It's finally time for this!" Ash felt his blood boiling with excitement. He also took out a Poké Ball filled with deep bonds and memories. "Since it's a battle between Pidgeot, we'll gladly fight to the very end! Pidgeot, I choose you!"
"Pidgeooooot!!!"
An even more dazzling light erupted!
The shiny Pidgeot appeared elegantly on the battlefield. Its rainbow-colored feathers shimmered with dreamlike brilliance beneath the sunlight pouring through the transparent dome, making it look exceptionally majestic.
Its eyes were equally sharp, yet carried an additional sense of calmness and confidence forged through countless battles.
One Pidgeot was the trusted ace of a Gym Leader, highly experienced and immensely powerful.
The other was the rare partner of a challenger, gifted with extraordinary talent and bound by deep trust.
The two Pidgeot faced each other in the sky as their powerful auras collided. It felt as though even the air itself had frozen solid.
The battle between the kings of the skies was about to begin!
