Side Story Arc: The Whispering Zephyrs and the Hidden Kingdom
Chapter 6: Standoff at the Border
The jungle was very hot. The air was thick and wet. It felt like trying to breathe while standing inside a warm bath. Large green leaves hung down from the tall trees, blocking out the bright sun. The ground was covered in dark, sticky mud and twisting tree roots.
Jin and Suyin stood perfectly still. They were far away from their clean, magical home in Ta Lo. They were deep in the heart of Africa, standing in front of the biggest secret in the world.
Right in front of them was an invisible wall.
To a normal person, it looked like a giant cliff made of gray rock, covered in green vines. But Jin and Suyin knew it was a trick. Someone had built a massive wall of pure energy. Then, they used powerful machines to paint a fake picture of a mountain on the outside of the wall.
The fake picture hid a beautiful, shining city filled with flying ships and tall silver buildings.
"We cannot just walk away," Jin whispered. His voice was very quiet. He did not want anyone, or any machine, to hear him. "The Guardian Dragon sent us to watch the outside world. He told us to learn about their weapons. This hidden city has metal that can stop any punch and eat any sound. We must learn more."
Suyin looked at the fake rock cliff. Her blue silk robes were damp from the hot jungle air. "But how do we get inside, Jin? The energy wall is huge. It goes high up into the sky and deep down into the dirt. We cannot climb over it. We cannot dig under it."
"There is a weak spot," Jin said. He pointed his finger at a patch of empty air right in front of them. "Every wall has a door. Even walls made of pure energy. I can feel the air moving differently right here. It is a seam. A place where two pieces of the energy shield meet."
Suyin stepped closer. She held her hands ready. "Are you going to break it?"
"No," Jin said quickly. He shook his head. "If I try to break it, the wall will fight back. It might hurt us. It will definitely set off loud alarms. I am going to try to open it very, very gently. Like opening a heavy door just a little bit. Just enough for us to slip through."
Jin took a deep breath. He closed his pale eyes and focused his mind.
He was a master of wind magic. He did not just blow gusts of wind. He could control the air in very small, careful ways. He could pull the air away from a place to create an empty space. This empty space was called a vacuum.
Jin slowly raised both of his hands. He pushed his hands forward until they were only an inch away from the invisible, buzzing energy shield. He could feel the strong power of the wall. It made the hairs on his arms stand up straight. It felt like standing too close to a bright lightning storm.
"Get ready, Suyin," Jin whispered. "When the gap opens, we must move very fast. We will step through the hole before the wall closes again."
Suyin nodded. She prepared her own magic. She pulled the wet water out of the hot jungle air. She wrapped the water around her body to bend the light. In one second, she melted into the background. She became completely invisible. She was ready to sneak into the hidden city.
Jin focused all of his power on the tiny seam in the energy wall.
He used his magic to grab the air right in front of the seam. Then, he pulled his hands apart. He was trying to pull the air away, creating a strong empty space. He hoped the empty space would suck the two sides of the energy wall apart, creating a small hole.
He pulled harder. Sweat dripped down his forehead. The magic took a lot of his strength.
The air popped. It sounded like a small balloon bursting.
For one tiny second, Jin thought his plan was working. The invisible wall seemed to stretch.
But the energy shield was not a simple door. It was built by very smart people using science and metal that Jin did not understand. The shield did not open gently. The shield recognized that magic was attacking it.
The shield fought back.
Suddenly, the fake picture of the rock cliff vanished. The green vines and gray rocks simply disappeared.
In their place, the true energy wall showed itself. It was a towering, massive wall of bright, glowing purple light. The purple light was so bright it hurt Jin's eyes. The light flashed in a pattern of tiny, connected shapes. It looked like a giant, glowing honeycomb made of pure power.
Then, the noise began.
It was not a loud, ringing bell. It was a deep, powerful hum. The sound vibrated in Jin's chest and made his teeth ache. The giant purple wall hummed with anger. It knew they were there. It was warning the city inside.
"Jin! Stop!" Suyin shouted from the empty air next to him. She could see that the plan had failed.
Jin quickly pulled his hands back. He stopped his wind magic. He stepped back from the glowing purple wall, breathing hard.
"The shield is too smart," Jin said. His voice shook a little bit. "It felt my magic. It did not open. It locked itself down."
Before they could turn around and run away into the thick, dark jungle, the world around them began to change.
The air in the clearing started to wave and shake. It looked exactly like the hot, wavy air you see above a fire on a summer day. But there was no fire here.
The wavy air was all around them. It was in the tall trees above. It was behind the large green fern bushes to their left. It was standing right on the muddy path behind them.
"Suyin," Jin whispered. He felt a cold rock of fear drop into his stomach. "We are not alone."
Out of the wavy, shaking air, shapes began to appear.
First, the colors shifted. The green leaves and brown tree trunks seemed to melt away. In their place, solid black shapes stepped forward.
They were people. But they did not look like normal people.
They wore tight, matte-black suits that covered their entire bodies. The suits looked like they were made of sleek, powerful metal woven into cloth. The metal drank the sunlight, leaving them looking like solid shadows standing in the bright jungle. They wore helmets shaped like the heads of fierce black panthers. The eyes of the panther helmets glowed with a faint, cold silver light.
It was the exact same black suit they had fought in the dark warehouse in Berlin. The suit that ate sound. The suit that stopped bullets.
But this time, there was not just one.
One black panther dropped down silently from a thick tree branch above them. It landed in the mud without making a single sound. Three more stepped out from behind the large fern bushes. Four more appeared on the path behind them, blocking their way back into the deep jungle.
Twelve figures in total. Twelve elite guards of the hidden city. They were the War Dogs.
They had been there the whole time. They had watched Jin and Suyin walk through the jungle. They had watched them talk about the fake mountain. They had waited patiently, completely invisible, until Jin tried to open the wall.
They were completely surrounded.
Jin and Suyin were backed up against the giant, humming purple energy wall. The twelve War Dogs stood in a perfect circle around them. There was no way out.
The War Dogs did not speak. They did not yell angry words. They moved with perfect, quiet discipline.
Every single guard raised a weapon.
They held long, sleek spears made of gray metal. The spears looked simple, but Jin knew they were terribly dangerous. As the guards pointed the spears at Jin and Suyin, the sharp tips of the weapons began to glow. A bright, humming blue light flared at the end of each spear. The blue light crackled with pure kinetic power. It was energy ready to be unleashed.
Twelve glowing blue spears pointed directly at their chests.
Jin's heart hammered in his chest. His mind raced. He had fought giant monsters in the dark lands of Ta Lo. He had fought fast, flying beasts with razor-sharp wings. But this was different.
These were humans. Humans who used science to make themselves as strong as magic.
Next to him, the air shimmered. Suyin dropped her invisibility mist. There was no point in hiding anymore. The War Dogs clearly had helmets that could see through her light tricks. Her deep blue silk robes appeared in the bright jungle sun.
Suyin was not going to give up without a fight. She was a master of the Water Temple.
She raised her hands quickly. She pulled the heavy, wet moisture out of the jungle air. In a flash, the water formed into two long, thick whips in her hands. She twisted her magic, pulling the heat out of the water. The water whips froze into solid, sharp, flexible ice. They crackled with cold power.
Jin also prepared to fight. He could not run, so he had to stand his ground.
He opened his hands. He pulled the air around his fingers. He squeezed the air tight, making it hard and sharp. He created invisible blades of wind spinning around his hands. The wind blades spun so fast they made a high, whining sound.
Jin and Suyin stood back-to-back. They faced the circle of twelve black panthers and twelve glowing blue spears.
The standoff began.
The jungle around them was perfectly quiet. Even the bugs had stopped buzzing. The only sound was the deep hum of the purple energy wall behind them, the crackle of Suyin's ice whips, and the dangerous buzz of the blue spear tips.
Nobody moved. Nobody blinked.
Jin looked at the guard standing directly in front of him. The guard's silver panther eyes stared back without any emotion.
Jin remembered the fight in Germany. He remembered how Suyin had thrown her sharpest, coldest ice needles at the guard. He remembered how the guard had raised a simple shield of light and completely destroyed the ice. He remembered how his own powerful wind attack had only pushed the guard back, but did not hurt him at all.
He looked at the black suits. The suits were made of the special gray metal. The Vibranium. The metal that ate force and stopped pain.
If Jin threw his wind blades, the black suits would probably just absorb the hit. The guards would not fall down. They would not bleed.
If Suyin swung her ice whips, the glowing blue spears might just melt them or shatter them into pieces.
Jin did the math in his head. Two magic spies against twelve soldiers wearing impossible armor and carrying energy weapons.
They could not win this fight.
If they tried to fight, they would lose. They would be killed, or they would be captured and put in chains.
But even worse, if they fought, they would start a war.
The Guardian Dragon had sent them to watch and learn. He had not sent them to attack another kingdom. If Jin and Suyin killed one of these guards, or if the guards killed them, the hidden city of Wakanda and the hidden valley of Ta Lo would become enemies. Magic would go to war against technology. Many people would die.
Jin took a deep breath. His hands were shaking just a little bit. He had to make a very hard choice. He had to be a smart spy, not an angry soldier.
"Suyin," Jin said. His voice was calm and clear. It carried across the quiet clearing.
"I am ready, Jin," Suyin said from behind him. She held her ice whips tight. "We fight our way into the trees. We hook the space and disappear."
"No," Jin said firmly. "We do not fight."
Suyin turned her head slightly to look at him. "What? They will kill us!"
"Look at their suits, Suyin," Jin said. "Look at their spears. We cannot beat twelve of them. Their metal is too strong. Our magic is not meant to break their science. If we attack, we will die today. The Dragon will never get our report."
"But—"
"We are watchers," Jin interrupted gently. "We must show them we are not a threat. We must yield."
Suyin was a proud warrior. She did not want to surrender. But she was also very smart. She remembered the shield in Berlin. She knew Jin was right. They were trapped, and they were outmatched.
Slowly, very slowly, Suyin let out a long breath.
She opened her hands. She stopped her magic.
The sharp, crackling ice whips instantly turned back into normal water. The water splashed loudly onto the muddy jungle floor, soaking into the dark dirt. Her hands were empty.
Jin did the same thing. He let the tight, sharp air around his hands relax. The spinning wind blades faded away into a soft breeze. The high whining sound stopped. His hands were empty.
The twelve War Dogs did not lower their glowing blue spears. They stood perfectly still, watching the two strangers very closely. They were waiting to see if this was a trick.
Jin knew they had to show true peace. They had to show they were civilized people, not wild monsters.
Jin turned to face the guard standing in the very front. This guard seemed to be the leader of the group. He stood a little taller, and his panther helmet had small silver markings on the forehead.
Jin slowly raised his empty hands. He lifted them up to the level of his chest. He turned his palms forward, so the leader could see he was not holding any weapons. He was not hiding any magic.
Suyin followed his lead. She raised her empty hands and showed her palms.
Then, moving very smoothly and slowly, Jin bowed his head. He bent his neck forward just a little bit. It was an old, respectful greeting taught by the elders of Ta Lo. It meant, "I see your strength, and I offer no harm."
Suyin bowed her head as well.
They stood there, with their hands raised and their heads bowed, surrounded by twelve deadly spears and a giant purple wall of energy.
Jin spoke. He used a clear, steady voice. He did not yell, but he made sure every guard could hear him.
"We mean you no harm," Jin said to the leader in the panther suit. "We are travelers from a very far place. We do not wish to fight. We yield."
The hot jungle remained totally silent. The glowing blue spears did not move.
Jin kept his hands raised. His heart beat loudly in his chest. He had dropped his weapons. He had offered peace. Now, it was up to the hidden city to decide. They would either lower their spears and talk, or they would fire their energy weapons and end the story of the Whispering Zephyrs right here in the mud.
Jin kept his eyes on the ground, waiting for the leader of the black panthers to make the next move. The standoff at the border hung by a very thin thread.
