Chapter 8 - But u loved me 1st

Focus--When Silence Becomes Dangerous

The truth had changed things.

But not in the way Aiden expected.

It didn't fix anything.

It didn't make the pain disappear.

It didn't suddenly rebuild the trust that had been broken.

If anything—

It made everything more complicated.

Because now, Aiden knew one thing for sure:

Kael didn't leave because he wanted to.

But that didn't answer everything.

It didn't explain why Kael still refused to say who.

It didn't explain why he was still hiding something.

And it definitely didn't explain why Aiden felt more unsettled now than before.

The next morning felt off.

Not in an obvious way.

Nothing dramatic happened.

Nothing seemed wrong.

But something felt… different.

Aiden couldn't explain it.

He sat in class, his pen moving absentmindedly across his notebook.

But he wasn't writing.

He was drawing.

Lines.

Shapes.

Nothing meaningful.

His thoughts were somewhere else.

"…they're still there."

Kael's words from the night before echoed in his mind.

Still there.

That meant—

Whatever danger Kael was talking about—

It wasn't over.

Aiden exhaled slowly, pressing the tip of his pen harder against the paper.

"…what are you thinking about?"

Aiden looked up.

Lena.

Of course.

"…nothing."

"Liar."

Aiden rolled his eyes slightly.

"You say that every time."

"And I'm right every time," she replied calmly.

Aiden didn't argue.

Because again—

She wasn't wrong.

"You talked to him, didn't you?" Lena asked.

Aiden paused.

"…yeah."

"And?"

Aiden hesitated.

Because he didn't know how to explain it.

"He told me… part of the truth."

Lena raised an eyebrow.

"Part?"

Aiden nodded.

"That sounds like him."

Aiden frowned slightly.

"…you don't trust him either."

"I don't trust people who hide things," Lena replied simply.

That hit.

Because neither did Aiden.

"…he said it was to protect me."

Lena was quiet for a moment.

Then—

"That doesn't automatically make it right."

Aiden sighed.

"I know."

Silence fell between them.

"But you still believe him."

It wasn't a question.

Aiden looked away.

"…I don't know."

That was the truth.

Because believing Kael—

Meant risking everything again.

Later that day—

Aiden noticed it again.

That feeling.

Like someone was watching him.

It wasn't strong.

Not obvious.

Just… there.

He turned his head slightly, scanning the hallway.

Nothing.

Students walking.

Talking.

Laughing.

Normal.

Too normal.

"…you okay?"

Aiden blinked.

Kael.

Standing beside him.

"…yeah."

Kael studied him for a moment.

"You don't look okay."

Aiden hesitated.

"…do you ever feel like someone's watching you?"

Kael's expression changed instantly.

Subtle.

But sharp.

"…why?"

That reaction—

It wasn't normal.

Aiden noticed.

"…so I'm not imagining it."

Kael didn't answer.

That was enough.

Aiden's chest tightened.

"…Kael."

"Don't think about it too much."

That answer—

It made things worse.

"Don't do that," Aiden said immediately.

"Do what?"

"Act like it's nothing."

Kael looked at him.

"…I'm handling it."

"There you go again."

Aiden stepped closer.

"Handling it alone."

Kael didn't respond.

Because he knew—

Aiden was right.

"…just stay close to me," Kael said quietly.

That wasn't a request.

It was instinct.

Aiden frowned.

"…you're not telling me everything."

"I told you what matters."

"No," Aiden shook his head. "You told me what you wanted to."

Silence.

But before Aiden could say anything else—

"Hey."

Both of them turned.

Ryan.

Standing a few steps away.

His expression unreadable.

"…you're back."

Aiden's voice came out softer than expected.

Ryan glanced at him.

"Yeah."

Short.

Simple.

Different.

The usual warmth in his tone—

Gone.

Aiden felt it immediately.

"…you disappeared."

Ryan let out a quiet breath.

"I needed space."

That sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Aiden didn't like it.

"…from me?"

Ryan hesitated.

"…from everything."

That wasn't a real answer.

And Aiden knew it.

But he didn't push.

Because right now—

Things were already too fragile.

Ryan's gaze shifted to Kael.

"…you still around?"

Kael didn't react.

"I said I wouldn't leave."

Ryan let out a small, humorless laugh.

"Guess we'll see how long that lasts."

Tension.

Again.

Aiden stepped in quickly.

"Stop."

Both of them fell silent.

"I'm not doing this again," Aiden continued.

Ryan looked at him.

"…you don't have to."

A pause.

"Just don't expect me to stand by and watch you get hurt again."

Those words—

They weren't aggressive.

They were protective.

And that made them heavier.

Aiden swallowed slightly.

"…I can take care of myself."

Ryan held his gaze.

"…can you?"

That question—

It lingered.

Because deep down—

Aiden wasn't sure.

The rest of the day passed slowly.

Too many thoughts.

Too many emotions.

Too many unanswered questions.

That evening—

Aiden walked home alone.

The sky had already darkened.

Streetlights flickered on.

The air felt colder than usual.

And that feeling—

It came back.

Stronger this time.

Aiden slowed his steps slightly.

His heart rate picking up.

"…stop overthinking."

He muttered to himself.

But even as he said it—

He knew.

Something wasn't right.

He turned his head slightly.

Nothing.

Again.

But this time—

He was sure.

He wasn't alone.

A sudden sound.

Footsteps.

Behind him.

Aiden stopped.

The footsteps stopped too.

Silence.

His chest tightened.

Slowly—

He turned around.

Nothing.

Empty street.

"…this is getting ridiculous."

He let out a breath.

Turning back—

And froze.

A figure.

Standing a few meters ahead.

Hidden under the dim streetlight.

Face unclear.

Still.

Watching.

Aiden's heart pounded.

"…who are you?"

No answer.

The figure didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Just stood there.

And watched.

Aiden took a step back.

Instinct.

Warning.

Danger.

"…this isn't funny."

Still—

No response.

The air felt heavier.

Colder.

Then—

The figure moved.

One step forward.

Aiden's breath hitched.

Another step.

Closer.

And that's when—

"Aiden."

A voice cut through the tension.

Familiar.

Strong.

Kael.

Aiden turned—

Relief flooding through him.

But when he looked back—

The figure was gone.

Just like that.

"…what happened?" Kael asked, stepping closer quickly.

Aiden shook his head slightly.

"There was someone—"

"Where?"

"There," Aiden pointed.

Empty.

Kael's expression darkened.

"…what did they look like?"

"I couldn't see."

Silence.

Heavy.

"…you weren't imagining it," Kael said quietly.

Aiden looked at him.

"…you knew this would happen."

It wasn't a question.

Kael didn't deny it.

That was enough.

Aiden's chest tightened again.

"…you said you'd handle it."

"I am."

"Then why am I the one dealing with it?"

Kael didn't respond.

Because he didn't have an answer.

"…this is exactly what I meant," Aiden continued, his voice shaking slightly now. "You keep things from me, and then I'm the one left in the dark."

"I didn't want you to get involved."

"Too late."

Silence.

"…I'm not letting you face this alone," Aiden said firmly.

Kael looked at him.

"…you don't understand how serious this is."

"Then explain it."

"I can't."

Again.

That answer again.

Aiden laughed softly.

"Of course you can't."

But this time—

There was no anger.

Just frustration.

"…come with me," Kael said.

Aiden frowned.

"Where?"

"Somewhere safer."

A pause.

"…with you?"

Kael met his eyes.

"…yes."

That one word—

It meant more than it should have.

Aiden hesitated.

Because despite everything—

He still trusted him.

At least a little.

"…fine."

They walked together.

Closer than before.

Not touching.

But close enough.

And for the first time—

The silence between them felt different.

Not empty.

Not tense.

Protective.

But somewhere in the distance—

Unseen.

Unnoticed.

Someone was still watching.

And this time—

They weren't planning to stay hidden for long.
