Chapter 69 - The Gravity of Broken Dreams

(Jay's POV)

The heavy, polished wooden walls of the Fernandes Mansion felt like they were physically shifting, sliding inward to trap me in a cage of suffocating silence. Below, the sprawling living area was filled with the low, buzzing murmurs of Section E.

The rooms were packed with people, but I had never felt more completely alone in my entire life. The air downstairs was thick with unsaid words, buried resentments, and the lingering, sour taste of Jeana's fake maternal performance.

Jane had grabbed her car keys and stormed out of the gates twenty minutes ago, the violent roar of her sports car engine echoing down the quiet driveway. Zoe was tucked away in a corner of the small den, her head bent close to Kian's as they exchanged urgent, low-toned whispers.

Everyone in this house had someone to lean on. Everyone had a hand to hold while navigating the debris of our shattered peace.

I had no one. The silence inside my own head was loud enough to make my temples throb with a sharp, blinding headache.

Needing to find a single pocket of space where I could draw oxygen without thirty pairs of analytical eyes tracing my every breath, I quietly stepped past the kitchen archway. I slipped through the shadowed service corridor and began climbing the stairs, floor after floor, pushing my body forward until I reached the top of the mansion.

The heavy, metallic handle of the rooftop door groaned loudly under my touch. The moment I pushed it open and stepped onto the open-air deck, the late afternoon wind slammed into my face.

It was freezing, sharp, and completely clean. It carried no lies. It carried no false promises. I walked across the bare concrete floor, my boots making dull clicking sounds, until I reached the edge of the stone balcony. I rested my forearms against the cold marble railing, staring out at the grey, sprawling skyline of Manila.

My entire body was trembling, but it wasn't because of the wind. My right hand, puffy, raw, and heavily bruised from the unfiltered punch I had thrown in the dim corridor of King's Ground last night, throbbed with a dull, rhythmic pain.

I dug my left hand deep into the pocket of my sweatpants, my fingers brushing against a small, crinkling object.

I pulled it out—a half-empty, silver pack of cigarettes I had confiscated from an enemy weeks ago, along with a cheap plastic lighter.

I knew the risks. I knew the exact, terrifying diagnosis that Percy had flown all the way to New York to consult top cardiologists about. I knew my heart was a ticking time bomb, a fragile, failing muscle working twice as hard just to keep me upright. But right now, the agonizing weight of reality was a far greater threat than any physical illness.

With shaking fingers, I pulled a single cigarette out, placed it firmly between my lips, and flicked the lighter. A small, violent orange flame flared against the wind, catching the tip.

I took a deep, dragging breath, filling my lungs with the hot, acrid smoke. I held it for three agonizing seconds before exhaling slowly. The grey cloud drifted over the balcony ledge, twisting and breaking apart in the freezing air until it dissolved completely into nothingness.

I wished my mind could dissolve that easily.

"The past is haunting us back, Jay. Your old enemies are crawling out of the shadows. SAM is..."

Ava's panicked, breathless voice from the speakerphone call kept replaying in my mind, a relentless loop of impending doom. The fragile peace we had bled for, the quiet life we had tried so hard to build after escaping the horror of hell, was already disintegrating.

The ghosts we thought we had buried deep under the concrete were digging their way back to the surface. They were coming back for blood, and I could feel the invisible crosshairs settling onto my back.

And then, as if the terrifying threat of an impending war wasn't enough to crush my spirit, my treacherous mind shifted, sliding seamlessly from Ava's warnings to the raw, bleeding memory of Keifer's face.

Every single word he had ever whispered to me, every intense gaze of devotion he had given me in the quiet hours of the night, felt like a cruel, calculated mockery now.

Before I could stop it, a single, boiling tear escaped the corner of my eye, tracking a slow, burning path down my freezing cheek.

The moment I felt the dampness, a wave of intense, white-hot fury exploded in my chest. I raised the sleeve of my oversized black sweater and wiped the tear away with an aggressive, brutal swipe, rubbing the skin until it stung. I hated the vulnerability. I hated that despite everything he had put me through, he still possessed the absolute power to make me cry.

Why? I thought, my chest heaving against the cold marble railing. Why does he have to do this to me? Why can't I just have a normal, quiet life like every other girl?

I stared up at the darkening sky, a bitter, cynical hollow expanding behind my ribs. All my life, I had been denied the basic, simple anchors that kept normal people safe. I wanted a mother, but Jeana had traded us away for a new, cleaner family without a second thought. I wanted a father, but his shadow was nothing but a curse for me. I wanted my Kuya Ari but his lingering trauma kept him a universe away from me.

And then, there was my love. The one person I thought was entirely mine, a boy who belonged to me completely. But even that was just an illusion.

When I first met Keifer Watson, I truly believed the universe was finally showing me mercy. I thought I had found a permanent shelter, a fierce, protective shoulder where I could finally drop my heavy weapons and lean my exhausted head.

He was just as broken, just as scarred, and just as deeply damaged by his lineage as I was by mine. I had foolishly, naively believed that two shattered people could bring their broken pieces together to build a fortress against the rest of the world.

But I was wrong. He didn't heal me. He didn't protect me. Instead, he just took my existing, bleeding wounds and ripped them open wider with a smile, leaving me to suffocate in the dark while he hid behind a flawless wall of deception.

I took another long, dragging pull from the cigarette, the paper burning down down toward my fingers, when a sharp, thunderous crash shattered the quiet of the roof behind me.

"What the hell are you doing?!"

I didn't even need to turn around to identify the intruder. That voice, rich with an unstable, volatile mixture of pure fury, terror, and frantic desperation, belonged to no one else but the King of Uplongs himself. Keifer.

Before I could even draw another breath to speak, heavy, furious footsteps slammed against the concrete. Keifer crossed the distance between us like a flash of lightning.

His large hand shot out, his fingers violently snatching the burning stick straight from between my lips. He threw it to the ground and brought his heavy leather boot down over it, grinding the paper and the glowing orange embers into absolute, blackened dust against the floor.

"You are suffering from a severe cardiovascular disease, Jay!" Keifer shouted, his chest heaving violently under his dark leather jacket, his face completely bloodless, white with absolute panic. "And instead of taking care of yourself, instead of staying inside where it's safe, you are up here smoking in the freezing wind?! Are you completely trying to kill yourself?!"

I slowly lowered my arm, my face shifting instantly into a perfectly still, completely deadpan mask of frost. I rolled my eyes, leaning my back against the stone railing as I looked at him with absolute, unadulterated detachment.

"What is it to you?" I asked, my voice flat, empty, and entirely devoid of any human emotion. "Mind your own business, Watson."

The clinical, icy use of his last name seemed to snap the final thread of his control. Keifer took a violent step forward, invading my personal space before I could even think about moving away.

His large, strong hands shot out, gripping me firmly by the waist and pulling my body forward until I was pinned flat against the solid, burning heat of his chest.

"You are my business, Jay," he growled softly, his voice dropping into a desperate, intensely deep register that vibrated against my collarbone. His eyes searched mine, burning with a raw, agonizing hunger that made my own heart stutter. "Everything related to you is my business. Your safety, your health, your heart—everything. It

always has been, and it always will be."

The sudden, brutal proximity sent a dangerous, intoxicating jolt of electricity straight down my spine, but the rising anger in my chest quickly rose up to choke the feeling out. I placed my open palms flat against his leather jacket, shoving him back with every scrap of strength my bruised knuckles could muster.

"You don't own me, Keifer!" I shouted, the raw emotion bursting through my calm facade. "Get your hands off me!"

He didn't let go completely, his hands shifting to grip my shoulders with an unyielding force, holding me firmly in place against the balcony edge. "I told you once before, remember? You are mine, and I am yours. This has never been about owning you, Jay. It's about who we are to each other. It's about the fact that I belong to you."

Hearing those exact words—the very promises he used to whisper against my skin when we were hidden away from the chaos of the world—caused my heart to do a violent, involuntary backflip inside my ribs.

For a single, terrifying second, the massive wall of ice around my soul threatened to melt completely. I wanted to drop my head against his chest and forget the lies.

But the memory of his betrayal was a shield I knew how to wield perfectly. I forced my features into a dead, sarcastic glare, a mocking smile cutting across my lips.

"Oh, I also remember you saying that you would never lie to me," I sneered, my voice dripping with pure, concentrated venom. "But everything between us from the very beginning was just one giant, beautiful lie, wasn't it, Keifer? Everything you ever said to me was engineered."

"It was not!" Keifer roared, his voice cracking violently under the immense strain of his emotions. He shook his head frantically, his eyes wide and wild as he held onto my shoulders. "No! I agree that at the very beginning, I had motives... I agree to that. I wanted to get close to you for revenge. But I also swear to god, Jay, everything changed the exact moment I fell for you! I didn't plan on loving anyone. But I fell so hard for you that I forgot my own name. My feelings for you are the only real thing I have left in this pathetic world! And now... now I can't even breathe without you."

I let out a loud, mocking laugh, clapping my hands together once in a slow, patronising motion that cut through his desperate words.

"Wow... what a beautiful dialogue," I scoffed, my voice dripping with pure, unadulterated sarcasm. "Your movie would have been an absolute hit in Kwanaan, Keifer. Truly an Oscar-worthy performance."

Keifer winced as if I had physically driven a blade straight into his chest, his shoulders sagging instantly. But he didn't back down. He didn't release his hold on my mind.

"Think whatever you want of me, Jay. Call me a liar, call me a monster, hate my face if you have to. But I am never going to stop asking for your forgiveness. I will beg for it until my last breath."

"Why are you doing this, Keifer?!" I finally snapped, the calm mask completely shattering as the raw, bleeding frustration tore out of my throat. I grabbed the lapels of his leather jacket, shaking him with a sudden, desperate strength. "Why can't you just leave me alone?! Why do you keep dragging me back into this absolute torment?! If there's nothing left, why can't you just let me go?!"

I looked up into his face, intending to scream more, to vent the entire universe of pain sitting in my chest, but the words died instantly in my throat.

Keifer was crying.

The fierce, terrifying King of Uplongs—the guy who could face an entire army of enemies without ever blinking—had thick, heavy tears pouring freely down his pale cheeks. His eyes were completely bloodshot, filled with a level of pure, unedited, and agonizing sorrow that made my own chest throb in sympathy.

Seeing him cry like that... it hurt. It hurt so badly it felt like a physical blade turning slowly in my stomach.

"Because I can't lose you, Jay," Keifer whispered, his voice completely breaking as a heavy, ragged sob tore through his chest.

He reached up, his trembling hands gently framing my face, his thumbs wiping at the edges of my eyes. "You are my entire life. You are the only single thing I have left in this world after my mom . You are my home, Jay. My absolute everything. And I will spend the rest of my life earning your forgiveness, even if I have to crawl through broken glass every single day to do it."

Before I could even process his words, Keifer slowly lowered his body. Right there on the hard, dusty concrete of the rooftop terrace, the proud leader of Section E , heir of Watson's dropped straight onto his knees in front of me. He looked up at me with absolute humility, his hands reaching out to clutch the hem of my t shirt.

"Just give me a single chance, Jay," he begged, his voice reduced to a pathetic, bleeding rasp that shook with the wind. "Please. Just one chance to explain everything. Let me mend us. Please don't throw me away into the dark."

I stared down at him kneeling at my feet. The sight of him so thoroughly broken, so completely defeated by his own love and guilt, tore at the remaining strings of my heart.

But as I looked at his trembling shoulders, the stark truth of our reality settled over me like a freezing shroud.

I let out a soft, humorless laugh—a sound entirely devoid of any joy or life.

"Mend?" I asked, my voice dropping into a freezing, lifeless whisper that caused him to stiffen. "Keifer... things are only mended when there is actually something left to fix. But look at us. There is absolutely nothing left between us to mend."

I didn't wait to see the look of devastation destroy his face completely. I violently yanked the hem of my sweater out of his trembling fingers, turned on my heel, and marched straight toward the rooftop door, leaving him kneeling alone in the fading light of the ruined day.

------------------------------

(Keifer's POV)

The air on the rooftop was freezing, but the blood running through my veins felt like pure, volatile fire. The moment I had followed Jay up those stairs, my heart had been hammering a frantic, terrifying rhythm against my ribs.

I knew she was suffocating downstairs under the weight of the family drama, I knew she needed space to breathe, but when I stepped onto that open concrete deck and saw her standing by the balcony... my entire soul completely froze in my chest.

She had a cigarette pressed tightly between her lips. The grey, acrid smoke was drifting around her pale face, blurring the sharp, beautiful lines of her profile as she stared out at the city.

Fury, white-hot and laced with an absolute, primitive terror, exploded behind my eyes.

What the hell is she doing?! My mind shrieked. She was suffering from a severe, critical cardiovascular disease. Her body was fragile, her heart was working twice as hard just to keep her standing upright, and here she was, pumping actual poison into her lungs because she was too stressed to cope with the noise of the world.

"What the hell are you doing?!" I roared, the words tearing out of my throat before I could even attempt to stop them.

I marched across the roof, my leather boots slamming hard against the concrete floor. I didn't care if she hated me for it. I didn't care if she pushed me away.

I grabbed her wrist, my fingers registering how small, cold, and delicate she actually was, and snatched the burning cigarette right out of her hand. I threw it to the ground and stomped it out with the heel of my boot, crushing the white paper and the glowing orange embers into absolute nothingness against the stone.

"You are suffering from a severe heart disease and instead of taking care of yourself, you are up here smoking?!" I yelled, my chest heaving as I stared down at her, my hands shaking with an intensity I couldn't control.

I was terrified. The thought of her heart failing, the thought of losing her to the shadows because she refused to protect her own life, was a living nightmare I knew I wouldn't survive.

But Jay didn't look scared. She didn't even look angry. She just slowly rolled her eyes, her beautiful, dark features setting into that familiar, completely indifferent Diva mask that made her look like an untouchable ice queen.

"What is it to you?" she said, her voice entirely flat, cutting through my panic like a scalpel. "Mind your own business, Watson."

Watson.

Hearing my last name leave her lips in that freezing, detached manner felt like a physical bullet tearing straight through my chest. The distance she was placing between us was a bottomless chasm I didn't know how to cross. The rejection, combined with the terrifying sight of her self-destruction, completely shattered the last remnants of my composure.

Before I could think, before my brain could process the risk, I lunged forward. I wrapped my arms firmly around her slender waist, pulling her small, cold body flush against my chest, wanting nothing more than to force her to feel the frantic, terrified beating of my own heart.

"You are my business, Jay," I growled, my voice shaking with an intensity that came from the absolute depths of my soul.

"Everything related to you is. I don't care if you hate me, I don't care if you want to kill me, but I am not going to stand by and watch you destroy your own health!"

She didn't soften. She didn't lean into my warmth. Instead, she placed her open hands against my chest and shoved me back with a surprising amount of force, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, violent spark.

"You don't own me!" she shouted, her voice echoing off the concrete walls.

"I told you once, remember?" I pressed, my voice cracking as I held onto her shoulders, refusing to let her drift away into the frost. "You are mine and I am yours. It's not about owning you, Jay. It has never been about that. It's about the fact that my heart belongs to you, and I know yours belongs to me."

For a split second, I saw it. A tiny, almost imperceptible flicker of genuine emotion in her eyes. Her heart rate must have spiked, because I could see the rapid pulse jumping in the hollow of her throat.

But within a heartbeat, the ice wall slammed back down, and a cruel, sarcastic smirk twisted her lips.

"I also remember you said you won't lie to me," she whispered, her tone dripping with pure, mocking venom. "But everything between us was a lie, wasn't it? Every single thing."

The accusation felt like a physical blade ripping through my stomach. "It was not!" I yelled, the tears I had been fighting back for days finally burning my eyes. "No! Everything at first... I agree, I had a plan, I had motives. I wanted to get close to your family. But I also don't agree that it stayed a lie! The moment I fell for you, Jay, everything became real. I fell so hard for you that I forgot my own name. And now... now I can't even live without you."

Jay let out a sharp, mocking laugh that sounded completely hollow. "Wow, what a dialogue. Your movie would have been a total hit, Kwanaan."

Hearing her use that name—treating my desperate, bleeding confession like a cheap, rehearsed movie script—completely broke something vital inside my chest. The dam holding back my grief, my guilt, and my absolute terror shattered into pieces.

The tears finally spilled over, pouring down my face in hot, heavy streams. My hands shook violently as I reached up to touch her face, my thumbs desperately brushing against her skin just to feel her warmth one last time.

"Think whatever you want of me, Jay," I sobbed, my voice completely disintegrating into a pathetic, weeping mess. "But I won't stop asking for your forgiveness. I will crawl on my knees until the day I die if it means you look at me with love again."

"Why are you doing this, Keifer?!" she snapped, her voice finally breaking through her cold facade, revealing the raw, bleeding frustration underneath.I looked down at her through my tear-blurred vision, my chest aching so hard I could barely draw oxygen into my lungs.

"Because I can't lose you," I whispered, a heavy, ragged sob rattling my entire frame. "You are my life, Jay. You are the only single thing I have left in this world after my mom . You are my home. My everything. And I will spend the rest of my life earning your forgiveness."

The weight of my sins, the weight of my love, and the terrifying fear of a future without her completely brought me down to the earth. My legs gave out, and I dropped straight onto my knees on the cold, hard concrete right in front of her.

I reached out, my trembling hands grabbing the fabric of her sweater, clutching it like a drowning man clutching a piece of driftwood."Just give me a chance, Jay," I begged, looking up at her through a flood of tears, my pride completely dead and buried in the dirt.

"Please. Let me explain. Let me mend us. Don't leave me out here in the dark."

Jay stood perfectly still, looking down at me as I knelt before her. For a long, silent moment, the wind whistled around the empty roof. Then, she let out a soft, chilling laugh that made my blood run completely cold.

"Mend?" she asked, her voice dropping into an icy, lifeless register that sounded like a final judgment. "Things are only mended when there is anything left, Keifer. But there is absolutely nothing left between us."

With a brutal, effortless tug, she yanked the fabric of her clothes completely out of my grip. She turned around and walked away, her heavy footsteps fading out as the iron door of the rooftop clicked shut behind her.

I stayed on my knees in the center of the empty deck, my head falling forward until my forehead touched the cold concrete floor. A violent, agonizing sob tore out of my throat, my hands curling into tight fists as I slammed them against the stone.

I was the King of Uplongs, a president, a fighter—but right here, in the ruins of the only love I had ever known, I was absolutely nothing.
