Ahead of Ryu stood a thick, lush tree.
Beneath this tree, a figure was leaning.
This person wore a black, martial arts-style robe, had long, flowing black hair, a full beard, and eyes that held a depth as unfathomable as an abyss.
This person was none other than the disheveled middle-aged man Ryu had seen at the beach playground earlier.
Ryu remembered this man because it was this same disheveled man who had been following him.
'Could I have been kidnapped by this man?'
Ryu's expression turned serious as he nervously stared at the disheveled man.
'Who are you?' he thought, while looking around at his surroundings.
The area was surrounded by green hills and clear water, seemingly situated on a hillside.
Wait…
"That's over there..."
Ryu suddenly noticed a vast expanse of white in the distance.
'Isn't that a cemetery?'
Ryu was somewhat surprised.
Shouldn't kidnappers usually lock their hostages in a dark room?
This middle-aged man, who seemed to be a kidnapper, had left him here and hadn't even tied him up.
Looking at his strong muscles, Ryu felt he probably couldn't beat him.
After considering his options, Ryu decided to talk to him first.
The disheveled man didn't rush to answer Ryu's question. Instead, he took a few gulps of wine from his gourd before turning to Ryu and asking, "What are you doing here?"
Ryu was taken aback. Wasn't he the one who asked first?
How did it become the other person asking him questions?
"Hey! Don't change the subject. Who are you? Why are you here? Was that shadowy figure from last night you?"
Ryu asked this because the hairstyle of the person in front of him was very similar to the tentacles above the shadowy figure from last night.
He remembered that a slight breeze had indeed blown last night.
Thinking of this, Ryu found it difficult to speak, his expression extremely awkward.
It wasn't entirely his fault.
Who would go to a cemetery in the middle of the night to drink and scare people? That's crazy.
Besides, he was also a victim.
After figuring this out, Ryu's gaze towards the disheveled man became self-righteous.
The disheveled man looked at Ryu for a while, then looked away, gazing into the distance.
After a long silence, he finally spoke.
"I came to visit a friend. I just didn't expect anyone else to come here like me. Last night I heard you calling for someone, and when I got there, you suddenly fainted."
Ryu's lips twitched.
'It's all your fault I fainted! Why didn't you stay home in the middle of the night? Why did you come to this godforsaken place?'
Thinking this, he said aloud, "Oh, is that so? Did I sleep here all night?"
The disheveled uncle replied calmly, "You fainted last night. This is a suburban cemetery area; hardly anyone comes here usually. There's not much traffic on the roads at night, so I had to bring you here. It's summer now; sleeping in the wild for a night isn't a problem."
Ryu was speechless.
He forced a smile and said, "Well, thank you very much."
Ryu was exasperated; this uncle seemed a bit off.
Coming to the cemetery alone in the middle of the night without a sound was one thing.
He was even drinking!
Drinking was one thing, but making such a racket!
Most importantly, why was he sleeping here?
Is this something a human would do?
Just as he was mentally ranting, something suddenly fell from the tree.
Ryu jumped in surprise. After focusing and recognizing what it was, he immediately exclaimed in delight, "Karupin..."
"Meow..."
Karupin meowed, then transmitted its voice to Ryu, "You're awake! I thought you were going to die!"
"Pah! Pah! Pah! If you can't speak human language, shut up! What do you mean by 'die'? As for you, where were you last night? I called you so many times and you didn't respond," Ryu transmitted his voice, annoyed.
Karupin stretched and then said, "Of course I went to absorb mysterious energy. You know I can't respond to you while I'm absorbing it."
"Then couldn't you have told me beforehand? Do you even know what I went through last night?"
If the slovenly old man hadn't been there, he really wanted to pick up Karupin and spin it around a hundred times in the air, to teach it a lesson about why flowers are so red.
The slovenly old man noticed that Ryu and Karupin were exchanging glances.
A strange look appeared in his deep eyes.
He knew Karupin.
He had gone to watch Teiko's matches and had naturally seen Karupin in Teiko's rest area.
And he had also seen Karupin and Ryu together at the beach playground.
That's why he hadn't chased Karupin away as if it were a stray cat.
"Why are you here?"
Because of Kazuo Kamimono's story, the slovenly old man knew about an event regarding traveling to Hokkaido, and that Ryu had participated.
Unexpectedly, Ryu actually came here, and even to the cemetery.
Hearing the question, Ryu thought for a moment before replying, "I, I, I was just passing by. I saw this white stuff and thought it looked strange, so I came to take a look."
The slovenly uncle, seeing Ryu's earnest lie, didn't call him out.
Glug... glug... glug...
The slovenly uncle tilted his head back and took a few more gulps of his drink, then spoke, "You're from Teiko, right? School shouldn't be on holiday yet!"
"Ah, I've applied for early graduation, so I'm free now."
Ryu's words made the slovenly uncle look at him a few more times.
Early graduation meant that Ryu's grades were more than just excellent.
A hint of appreciation appeared in the slovenly uncle's eyes.
After chatting for a while, Ryu knew that the uncle wasn't a bad person, so he went over and picked up Karupin, leaning against a tree as well.
Ryu spoke up, "Um... Uncle, we met at the beach amusement park before, right?"
"Yes! I watched your match then. You were very good, with a solid foundation and top-notch talent."
Hearing such praise, Ryu felt a little embarrassed.
"Haha! It's alright! I still have a lot to learn!" Ryu grinned, then asked curiously, "By the way, Uncle, I still don't know your name?!"
Upon hearing this, the disheveled middle-aged man remained silent for a moment before speaking.
"Kazama Kouki."
Huh?
Ryu was slightly taken aback.
'Kazama Kouki? What an amazing name!'
Majestic, domineering, unrestrained.
But seeing the man's attire, it actually suits the name quite well.
"Uncle! You're not from Hokkaido, are you? What are you doing here? And in a cemetery no less."
If it weren't for their brief prior acquaintance, Ryu might have actually thought the man was secretly following him.
Hearing Ryu's words, a trace of sadness appeared in Kazama Kouki's eyes.
He tilted his head back and took a few more gulps of wine, then looked towards the distant cemetery and said, "To pay respects to a dear friend."
"Oh, sorry, I brought up something sad."
Ryu realized he had asked a foolish question.
Coming to a cemetery is obviously for paying respects; surely no one else is here to look for something like me.
"Look how close this friend and the old man are!"
Hahahaha…
Kazama Kouki suddenly burst into laughter.
"Close? Perhaps!"
The laughter subsided, and he gave a self-deprecating smile.
It was as if he could see his dearest friend mocking him mercilessly.
