Chapter 8 - The Scars We Choose

The training began the next day.

Jiang Beichen was relentless. She had been a captain in the Defense Corps, one of the spire's most skilled combatants, and she pushed Shen Ye harder than he had ever been pushed.

"Your abilities cost survival time," she said, standing over him as he gasped for breath on the floor of their hidden room. "That means you can't afford to waste them. Every time you use Life Anchor, you're spending your life. So you'd better be damn sure it's worth it."

She taught him to fight without his abilities. Hand-to-hand, blade work, the basics of combat that every Defense Corps recruit learned. Shen Ye was not a natural fighter—his movements were stiff, his instincts slow—but he learned. He had to.

Wei Mingxi trained too, though her skills were different. She wasn't a fighter. But she was a tracker, a hunter, a survivor. She taught them the maintenance routes, the hidden passages, the places where the spire's security was weakest. She taught them how to move without being seen, how to find food and water when the system cut their rations, how to survive in a spire that wanted them dead.

The days blurred together. Training, searching, waiting. Jiang Beichen was gathering intelligence, using old contacts in the Defense Corps who still trusted her. Wei Mingxi was mapping the spire's lower levels, looking for the entrance to Level Zero. Shen Ye was learning to control his power.

On the fifteenth day, he discovered something new.

They were sparring—Shen Ye and Jiang Beichen, her ice blades against his bare hands. He was losing, as usual. But this time, when her blade cut across his arm, something happened.

The wound healed. Not instantly, but fast—faster than it should have. And when it closed, a thin white scar remained, joining the others on his skin.

[New scar recorded. Current count: 5]

[Effect: +15% damage resistance against Calamity Beasts. Bonded souls receive +5% damage resistance.]

[New ability unlocked: Scarred Resilience]

[Scarred Resilience (Passive)]

[For every 5 scars, Shen Ye gains 5% damage resistance against all forms of attack. Current resistance: 5%.]

[Bonded souls receive half this resistance.]

Shen Ye stared at the notification. "I get stronger every time I'm hurt?"

Jiang Beichen lowered her blade, her eyes sharp. "Scar-based progression. That's… I've never seen a class like that."

"It makes sense," Wei Mingxi said from the doorway, where she'd been watching. "Vowkeepers bond through sacrifice. Every scar is a sacrifice. A piece of yourself that you give to protect someone else."

She walked into the room, holding a data crystal. "I found something. The Council's records on bonding classes. They didn't erase everything."

She plugged the crystal into the terminal. New files appeared—hundreds of them, thousands, a whole archive that the Council had tried to bury.

"Bonding classes were the most powerful classes in the Oracle System," she read. "Soul Binders, Vowkeepers, Oathbreakers, Promise Weavers. They could share abilities, transfer survival time, even resurrect the dead—at a cost. The cost was always the same. Life. Scars. Sacrifice."

She scrolled through the files. "The Council didn't just suppress them because they were powerful. They suppressed them because bonding classes threatened the system itself. If people could share survival time, pool their resources, support each other—the Council couldn't control them. Couldn't force them to work for scraps, couldn't threaten them with starvation, couldn't make them obey."

She looked at Shen Ye. "You're not just a threat because you can fight Calamity Beasts. You're a threat because you can make people free."

The words hung in the air.

Shen Ye looked at his hands. Five scars now, crisscrossing his palms and fingers. Each one a choice. Each one a sacrifice.

He thought about the bonded souls he had found. Wei Mingxi, who had been dying alone in a corridor, abandoned because she was useless. Jiang Beichen, who had been branded a traitor for telling the truth. How many others were there? How many Nulls, how many outcasts, how many people the Council had written off as expendable?

"I need to find the third bonded soul," he said. "The Council's records—are there any Vowkeeper bonds listed?"

Wei Mingxi nodded slowly. "One. A Vowkeeper named Shen Yi. Your great-grandfather's sister. She was captured during the Soul Binder War and sentenced to Level Zero. They fed her to the Calamity King."

Shen Ye's blood ran cold. "She's dead?"

"The records say she was executed. But—" She pulled up a file. "Her survival time never stopped draining. For thirty years, the system has been recording her survival time as 'active.' She's not dead, Shen Ye. She's still in there. With the Calamity King."

Jiang Beichen's face was grim. "That's how the Council has been keeping the Calamity King contained. They're not just feeding it Nulls. They're feeding it a Vowkeeper's life force. A slow, constant drain that keeps the seal intact."

Shen Ye looked at the file. Shen Yi. His great-aunt. Thirty years in the darkness, her life draining away to feed a monster.

He made a decision.

"I'm going in," he said. "Level Zero. I'm going to find her."

Wei Mingxi didn't hesitate. "Then I'm going with you."

Jiang Beichen was quiet for a moment. Then she nodded. "The Calamity King's prison is heavily guarded. But I know the access routes. I was assigned to guard duty for six months. I know every patrol route, every security checkpoint, every weakness."

She looked at Shen Ye. "But once we go in, there's no coming back. Not until the Calamity King is bound or dead. And if we fail—"

"We won't fail," Shen Ye said.

He looked at his bonded souls. At the bonds that connected them. At the scars on his hands that proved he would give anything to protect them.
