The sunlight in the corridor gradually became dazzling, casting long, slanted shadows on the floor through the window frames. Dust floated in the air, carrying a lazy atmosphere.
The duration of one class passed quickly.
The classroom door was suddenly pulled open, and Teacher Ibuki poked his head out, looking at them expressionlessly. "Come in."
Shin-chan and Obito nodded and obediently walked into the classroom.
"Ahem." Teacher Ibuki stood in the center of the podium and cleared his throat. "I have an announcement to make."
The classroom fell silent.
Teacher Ibuki showed a rare smile. "Next month, the Third Hokage-sama will come to our school for an inspection."
The classroom instantly erupted into an uproar.
"A living Hokage-sama!"
"For real? Teacher Ibuki isn't lying to us, is he?"
"We'll get to see Sandaime-sama?"
The children whispered excitedly to each other. The Hokage was the pinnacle of Konoha Village, the legendary strongest Ninja, and the ultimate idol of all the children.
Teacher Ibuki raised his hand to signal everyone to be quiet. "Furthermore, during Hokage-sama's inspection, he will personally guide everyone in combat practice."
"A duel?" Obito jumped up, his voice trembling slightly with excitement. "With Hokage-sama?"
Teacher Ibuki nodded. "Hokage-sama will provide one-on-one guidance to selected students, pointing out your problems and teaching you how to improve."
"I'm going!" Obito's blood instantly boiled, and he raised his arms high above his head. "I want to duel Hokage-sama! Teacher Ibuki, choose me! I'll definitely give it my all!"
Laughter broke out in the classroom.
Someone whispered, "You just entered school and don't know anything; how are you going to fight?"
"Yeah, Hokage-sama could pin you down with just one finger."
"Never mind a finger—Hokage-sama could blow you all the way to the Konoha main gate with just a breath."
Obito's face flushed red. "So what? Getting to trade blows with Hokage-sama, even if I get beaten down, is an honor!"
Guy also stood up, tears welling in his eyes. "Well said! Youth is about challenging the strong! I want to trade blows with Hokage-sama too!"
"Whoa!"
"Here comes another one..."
"Even if you two teamed up, you wouldn't be enough for Hokage-sama to handle, right?"
"Exactly, exactly."
The classroom was in chaos. Teacher Ibuki slammed the desk hard.
"Quiet!"
Once the children had gradually quieted down, Teacher Ibuki adjusted his glasses, his gaze sweeping over everyone. "Hokage-sama has limited time and cannot duel everyone. Therefore, only the top three students will have this opportunity."
The classroom erupted into an uproar again.
"Top three?"
"It's over, it's over; I definitely don't stand a chance."
"The requirement is way too high!"
The classroom was filled with wails and gasps, and the eyes of most students immediately dimmed.
"In two weeks, there will be a comprehensive exam covering recent studies and basic training. The top three will get to stand before Hokage-sama." Teacher Ibuki scanned the room. "So, if you want this chance, you must start working hard now."
A blazing fire ignited in Obito's eyes. He clenched his fists, his body trembling as if he could already see himself dueling the Hokage.
"Top three! I will definitely make it into the top three!"
Guy also stood up, flames rising behind him. "Youth! This is the trial of Youth! To stand before Hokage-sama, I will burn myself up!"
"Stop dreaming, you two," someone threw cold water on them. "For a guy like Kakashi, the top three is a sure thing. Can you compete for the remaining two spots?"
Obito and Guy both looked at Kakashi. The silver-haired boy was resting his chin on his hand, looking out the window, seemingly not hearing a word they said.
Obito's expression stiffened, but he soon fired up again. "So... so what? There are still two spots left!"
"The other two spots are for others too; they won't go to you two."
"You!!!"
Teacher Ibuki slapped the desk again. "Alright, alright, stop arguing. From today on, attend classes and train well. Everyone has a chance."
Shin-chan hadn't spoken since a moment ago. He was resting his chin on his hand, looking at the blackboard, but his eyes were clearly vacant.
Uchiha Tetsu noticed his abnormality and whispered, "Shin-chan, what's wrong?"
Shin-chan slowly turned his head, his expression unusually serious. "Tetsu."
"Hmm?"
"Do you think if I could stand before Hokage-sama, I could ask him for a favor?"
"What favor?" Uchiha Tetsu was stunned for a moment, unable to imagine what Shin-chan could possibly need Hokage-sama to solve.
Shin-chan leaned in closer and lowered his voice. "Have Hokage-sama issue an order to eliminate all green peppers in Konoha Village. That way, I won't have to wait until I become the Hokage."
Uchiha Tetsu was silent for two seconds, then said, "In theory, the Hokage can indeed issue orders."
"That's great!"
"But," Uchiha Tetsu interrupted, "how could Hokage-sama issue an order for such a trivial matter?"
"Why not?" Shin-chan tilted his head. "Having to face green peppers every day, suffering every day—isn't that a big deal?"
Uchiha Tetsu opened his mouth. In a sense, for Shin-chan, this was indeed a monumental matter.
"Besides," Shin-chan continued, "if I'm standing right in front of him, he'd be too embarrassed to refuse a child's request, right?"
Uchiha Tetsu thought for a moment and reminded him, "Shin-chan, you have to earn the right to stand before him first before you can make a request."
"Oh, right." Shin-chan nodded, his gaze becoming determined. "I want to get into the top three!"
Uchiha Tetsu looked at his serious face, momentarily unsure of what to say. This guy is actually going to study hard just to avoid eating green peppers?
Shin-chan clenched his small fist. "For a future without green peppers, I will work hard!"
"Alright," Uchiha Tetsu nodded. "Then I'll work hard too and strive for the top three."
"You want to get in too?" Shin-chan blinked. "Then aren't we rivals?"
"Rivals, but also friends," Uchiha Tetsu smiled slightly. "Fair competition."
Shin-chan thought for a moment and held out his pinky finger. "Then pinky swear. Whoever makes it to the top three treats the other to a chocolate bar."
Uchiha Tetsu was stunned for a moment, then laughed.
"Okay, pinky swear."
Their pinky fingers hooked together.
The second class began. On the podium, Teacher Ibuki continued introducing Chakra. Although the explanation was detailed, the content still seemed difficult and boring to most of the newly enrolled children.
Shin-chan sat with his back straight, hands folded on his desk, his chin slightly raised, staring at the blackboard with bright, spirited eyes.
Throughout the day's classes and even during the after-school training, Shin-chan was full of fighting spirit. "For the top three, for the elimination of green peppers, I will burn my Youth!"
