Chapter 26 - The Realm of Echoing Memories

We lingered in the Nexus for a little while after leaving the neon city. The hum of advanced technology and the feeling of limitless speed still buzzed faintly under my skin. I carefully placed the Core of Progress into my bag, feeling the familiar weight of power growing heavier, yet also lighter, as if every new treasure made us stronger and freer at the same time.

"That was a rush," Aiko said, shaking her head with a wide grin, her eyes still sparkling like she was looking at a sky full of stars. "I never thought I'd see a world that moves so fast but also knows how to just… be. You really showed him that life isn't a race, huh?"

"Right?" I laughed, running a hand through my hair. "Sometimes, the best way forward is to slow down and appreciate where you are. But… you know, after all these adventures, big battles, bright lights, and loud noises… I feel a little different this time."

I turned slowly, looking out at the vast sea of floating doors. Each one glowed with its own distinct aura—fiery reds, icy blues, vibrant greens, golden yellows. We had walked through so many worlds of action, wonder, and beauty. But today, my gaze was drawn to a door that didn't shine or hum or pulse with energy.

It sat there, quiet and unassuming, seemingly waiting for me.

It was made of smooth, polished wood, dark and warm like old mahogany. Its surface wasn't plain, though—it was covered in intricate carvings of faces, places, and moments, all woven together like vines. If you looked closely, you could almost see the images shifting slightly, like pictures moving behind glass. It radiated a feeling of warmth, nostalgia, and a strange, gentle sadness. It felt like looking through an old photo album or hearing a song you haven't heard in years but know every word to.

"That one," I whispered, pointing toward it, my voice softening automatically as if speaking too loud might disturb something precious. "It feels… familiar. Like coming home."

"Memory world?" Aiko guessed softly, stepping beside me, her expression turning thoughtful. "Or maybe… a world made of the past? It feels so warm, but also a little heavy."

"Let's go see," I said, reaching out to touch the handle. It felt worn smooth, as though it had been opened thousands of times before.

"Hello everyone," I greeted gently, waving at the camera. "We've been to the future, to games, to candy lands, and deserts… but today, it feels like we're going somewhere much closer to the heart. Let's step inside."

I turned the handle slowly. The door didn't make a sound as it swung open.

The moment we crossed the threshold, the air around us shifted completely.

There was no heat, no cold, no wind, no gravity pulling in any strange directions. Instead, it felt like we were floating in a soft, golden light. The air smelled like old books, rain on asphalt, fresh bread, and blooming flowers—all at once, but perfectly blended.

When my vision cleared, I gasped softly.

We weren't standing on solid ground, but rather on a pathway made of shimmering light that stretched out into an endless horizon. All around us, floating like soap bubbles or glass lanterns, were millions of glowing spheres. Each one contained a moving image—a scene, a moment, a face, a place. They drifted lazily through the air, glowing in shades of gold, silver, blue, and soft pink.

"Whoa…" I breathed out, reaching up to touch one floating near my hand. Inside, I saw a scene of children laughing in a park, chasing each other under a sunny sky. "Minna-san… this place… it's made of memories. Every single thing that has ever happened, every feeling ever felt… it's all here."

[ilikecatslol6767]: OMFG it's so beautiful… I feel like crying just looking at it…

[womanizer796901]: BRO this hits different… feels like looking back at my childhood…

[sigmafalcon]: The atmosphere… it's so calm… like a warm hug

"This realm is called Mnemosyne, the World of Echoing Moments," the knowledge flowed into my mind like a gentle river. "It is the place where all memories are stored, cherished, and protected. It is said that as long as someone remembers something, it lives here forever. The people of this world are the Keepers—those who ensure that no story, no matter how small, is ever forgotten."

"It's amazing," Aiko whispered, watching a memory bubble drift past showing a family sharing dinner, everyone smiling warmly. "It's like the entire history of existence is right here, glowing bright."

Hana was unusually quiet, walking slowly beside me, her tail swaying gently. She kept looking up at the floating bubbles, her big eyes reflecting the golden light, as if she recognized some of them too.

We began walking along the path of light. It was incredibly peaceful. We saw memories of great triumphs and memories of quiet days. Memories of first meetings and memories of sad goodbyes. Everything was here, preserved perfectly, glowing with the emotion it held.

"Hello, travelers," a soft voice called out.

We looked up to see a figure floating toward us. It was an elderly being, appearing as a kindly old man with skin like parchment and eyes like deep pools of starlight. He wore robes woven from threads of silver and gold light, and his hands were cupped gently as if holding something fragile.

"I am the Archivist," he smiled gently, bowing his head. "I welcome you to the heart of all things remembered. It is rare for outsiders to find their way here."

"It's an honor," I said respectfully. "This place is more beautiful than words can say."

"It is," the Archivist agreed, his expression turning a little sad. "But… I am afraid our home is in danger."

"Danger?" Aiko asked, immediately alert. "What kind of danger?"

"Come," the Archivist gestured for us to follow him. "See for yourselves."

We walked deeper into the realm, moving toward the center where the brightest light glowed—the Core of the World, the place where the most precious memories were kept. But as we traveled, the scenery began to change.

The beautiful golden light dimmed, turning grey and dull. The glowing bubbles started to lose their shine, turning cloudy and dark. Worst of all… they were breaking.

Crack…

One by one, the memory bubbles were shattering into tiny shards of light that dissolved into nothingness. The sounds of laughter and music that usually filled the air were being replaced by silence… a hollow, cold silence.

"No…" I whispered, reaching out to catch a falling shard. It slipped through my fingers like mist. "They're disappearing…"

"They are being erased," the Archivist said sadly, tears forming in his starry eyes. "Something is… eating them. Something that feeds on the past, that believes memories are nothing but weight holding people back. It wants to make the world… empty."

Suddenly, the grey mist swirling around us solidified into a shape.

From the darkness rose a figure that looked like a tall, slender humanoid made entirely of swirling black smoke and grey fog. It had no face, just a smooth blank surface where features should be, and its hands were long and claw-like, dripping with shadows. It moved silently, gliding over the broken memories like a ghost.

"I am… Oblivion," its voice echoed, sounding like wind blowing through an empty tunnel. "Why do you hold onto these things? They are gone. They do not exist anymore. The past is dead… let it die."

"You can't say that!" I shouted, stepping forward, my hands clenched into fists. "Memories are what make us who we are! Without them, we wouldn't know who we love, where we came from, or why we fight!"

"They are useless baggage," Oblivion hissed, swirling closer, and as it moved, more bubbles burst around it. "Painful memories hurt. Happy memories fade. Why keep anything? Wouldn't it be better… to be nothing? To feel nothing?"

"It would be the worst thing in the world!" Aiko cried out, her voice trembling with emotion. "Even the sad memories are precious! They teach us, they make us grow, they remind us of what matters!"

"You do not understand perfection," Oblivion sneered, raising its shadowy arms. "Perfection is blank. Perfection is clean. And I will make this world perfect."

The battle began, but it was unlike any fight we had faced before.

Oblivion didn't strike with swords or fire or lightning. It struck with nothingness.

Everywhere it touched, reality faded. The path beneath us dissolved. The light around us dimmed. Even our voices became quieter, as if the sound was being sucked away.

"Get back!" I yelled, creating a shield of wind and light. But the shadows just seeped right through it, cold and chilling.

"It's like fighting fog!" Aiko shouted, firing energy blasts that went straight through the form without doing any damage. "Physical attacks don't work!"

"I know!" I gritted my teeth, trying to think. Oblivion was the concept of forgetting, of erasure, of emptiness. How do you fight something that is defined by what isn't there?

Oblivion swirled around us, whispering directly into our minds.

'Forget… just forget… it's easier… let go… nothing matters…'

I felt my thoughts starting to drift. For a split second, I couldn't remember where I was or why I was fighting. The faces of my friends became blurry. The journey… the gems… the viewers… everything felt far away, like a dream from a lifetime ago.

"Rizu!" Aiko grabbed my arm, shaking me violently. "Don't listen to it! Remember! Remember who you are!"

Right. I shook my head hard, banishing the fog from my mind.

[Chat is moving frantically]

[ilikecatslol6767]: RIZU REMEMBER ME!!! REMEMBER ALL OF US!!!

[womanizer796901]: REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED!!!

[sigmafalcon]: WE ARE WITH YOU!!! NEVER FORGET!!!

I looked at the camera. I saw the words. Millions of messages, millions of voices, millions of memories shared between us.

And suddenly, I understood.

Oblivion is strong when you are alone. It is strong when you only have your own mind to rely on. But I wasn't alone. I had millions of people remembering with me. I had millions of connections that could never be broken.

"You want to erase things?" I shouted, my voice ringing clear and loud, cutting through the silence. "You want to make everything blank? Then let me show you… the power of REMEMBRANCE!"

I reached into my bag and pulled out every single gem I had collected.

The power of Ice, Storm, Forest, Ocean, Music, Truth, Fire, Logic, Dreams, Connection, Time, Knowledge, Games, Beauty, and Progress.

But I didn't use them as weapons. I used them as mirrors.

"EVERYONE! HELP ME REMEMBER!"

I touched the Gem of Network. Instantly, millions of images flooded into my mind, and out into the world.

I remembered the frozen wasteland and the kindness of the Ice Queen. I remembered the raging storm and the strength of the wind spirits. I remembered the deep forest and the wisdom of the ancient trees. I remembered the vast ocean and the song of the tides. I remembered the music world where sound was magic. I remembered the mirror world and the truth it showed. I remembered the festival of fire and warmth. I remembered the city of gears and logic. I remembered the dream world and the hope it gave. I remembered the moment Neko stepped out of the screen to fight by my side. I remembered the desert of time and the weight of history. I remembered the library of infinite knowledge. I remembered the game world and the joy of play. I remembered the sweet garden and the power of love. I remembered the neon city and the speed of progress.

All of these memories, all of these experiences, all of these feelings… they burst out of me in a blinding wave of pure, golden light.

[ULTIMATE SKILL: LIBRARY OF LEGACIES]

The entire realm lit up brighter than the sun. Millions of memory bubbles shone with blinding intensity, fusing together into a massive, brilliant sphere of light behind me.

"What… what is this?!" Oblivion screamed, trying to retreat, but the light was everywhere. "I cannot erase this! It is too much! It is too strong!"

"You can't erase it," I said softly, floating forward surrounded by the glowing light of a thousand worlds. "Because memory isn't just something you keep inside. It's something you share. And as long as even one person remembers… it exists forever."

I raised my hand and gently touched the shadowy form of Oblivion.

REMEMBER.

I poured every beautiful, painful, happy, sad, precious memory directly into him.

He screamed as the light filled him. The emptiness was filled with color, with sound, with feeling, with life. His black smoke form turned grey, then silver, then pure white light. His blank face formed eyes, a nose, a mouth—all filled with tears.

"I… I see…" he whispered, his voice trembling. "It hurts… but it is also… so beautiful. I forgot… that nothing is truly gone… as long as it is remembered."

He shrank down, becoming a small, gentle spirit of mist and light. He was no longer a destroyer, but a keeper.

"I am sorry," he bowed low. "I was so afraid of pain and loss that I tried to erase everything. But I see now… the beauty is in the existence, not the perfection."

The realm was restored instantly.

The grey darkness vanished, replaced by the warm golden glow. The memory bubbles repaired themselves, shining brighter and stronger than before. The air was filled with the sound of millions of voices, telling millions of stories, all at once, creating the most beautiful symphony in existence.

From the very center, where the brightest light had been, the Core descended toward me. It was a crystal made of pure light, shaped like an hourglass and a book combined.

'The Gem of Recollection,' the voice echoed softly in my mind. 'With this, you shall never forget, and nothing you touch shall ever be truly lost. You hold the power to preserve history, feelings, and bonds for all eternity.'

I took the gem. It felt like holding the entire universe in my hand. It was warm, bright, and incredibly powerful.

The Archivist walked over to me, smiling through happy tears.

"You have saved our world, brave traveler," he said. "And you have taught even Oblivion the meaning of existence. You are truly a guardian of worlds."

"Thank you," I smiled back. "But I couldn't have done it alone."

[ilikecatslol6767]: WE DID IT!!!

[womanizer796901]: BEST ARC YET!!!

We spent the rest of the day wandering through the memories, reliving beautiful moments and learning ancient history. We even found memories of ourselves, of this journey, glowing bright and strong among the millions of others.

Eventually, it was time to leave. We walked back to the wooden door, ready to return to the Nexus.

"That was… incredible," Aiko said, wiping her eyes. "I feel like I understand everything better now. About why we are here. About why we keep going."

"Yeah," I agreed, looking at my collection of gems. "We carry all of these worlds with us now. In our hands… and in our hearts."

I looked at the camera, my eyes shining with light.

"Minna-san… thank you for remembering. Thank you for being part of my story. Because of you, nothing is ever truly lost."

"Let's go home… for now."
