Chapter 20 - Lirael's Arrival

The final day of the Grand Academy Trial dawned with an electric tension that seemed to vibrate through every stone of Rivermount. The central arena had been expanded to its fullest size, with reinforced spirit barriers rising higher than ever and additional viewing platforms erected for the growing number of dignitaries. Word had spread rapidly through the provincial capital: the corrupted beast incidents were no longer isolated accidents. Something larger was stirring near the Verdant Portal, and the trial had become both a proving ground for young talents and a subtle test of Valoria's readiness.

Proctor Eldrin stood on the raised dais, his white robes glowing under the morning sun. Flanking him were several high-ranking guests—representatives from guardian families and continental scouting delegations. Among the new arrivals was a group that drew every eye: the Kane family delegation, a powerful lineage known for their hidden influence and exceptional dual-affinity talents. They wore elegant silver-and-blue robes embroidered with subtle frost runes, their presence radiating quiet authority.

"Today marks the climax of the Provincial Grand Trial," Eldrin announced, his voice amplified across the arena. "Team subjugation events, final bracket challenges, and a grand exhibition battle will determine the ultimate rankings. Top ten individuals and teams will receive elite sponsorship, direct entry into Rivermount's inner court, and the rare opportunity to train under continental guardians. Fight with everything you have—the portals never sleep, and neither should we."

Kai stood with his team in the preparation area, the weight of the past days' breakthroughs settling comfortably in his body. Early Adept rank felt natural now. The fourth Essence Vein, though still thin, gave him sharper Rift Echo Sense, allowing him to detect the faint, sickly violet signatures of corrupted essence even before they manifested. Mira stood beside him, her Gale affinity sharper after the Nexus session. Tomas, Seline, and Lorne completed the group, their coordination tighter than ever.

Then the Kane delegation entered the VIP viewing section, and the atmosphere shifted.

Leading them was a tall, graceful woman in her forties—Lady Elowen Kane—accompanied by several retainers. But it was the silver-haired girl walking half a step behind her who commanded attention. Lirael Kane appeared no older than fifteen, yet her presence was commanding. Long silver hair cascaded like frozen moonlight down her back, framing sharp, icy-blue eyes that seemed to pierce through anyone they landed on. She moved with effortless grace, her aura radiating dual affinities: the crisp chill of Frost and an underlying, rare Void-Light that shimmered like fractured starlight. Even from a distance, Kai could sense the power contained within her—strong, controlled, and cold.

Lirael's expression remained aloof, almost bored, as she scanned the arena. She trusted no one easily; that much was obvious from the way she kept her distance from even her own delegation, arms crossed and posture radiating quiet disdain for the spectacle.

Mira noticed Kai's gaze. "That's Lirael Kane. Rumors say she's already at mid-Adept and carries the expectations of one of Valoria's hidden guardian lines. Cold as winter frost, they say. Doesn't warm to anyone."

Kai nodded slowly, feeling a strange resonance stir in his shadow. "She feels… different. Like her power has echoes of something beyond the five continents."

The first major event of the day was a large-scale team subjugation challenge. Five elite teams, including Kai's and two from the strongest provincial groups, were selected to face a staged wave of spirit beasts in the main arena. The Kane delegation watched from above, Lirael leaning slightly forward for the first time as the beasts were released.

The initial waves were standard—coordinated packs of mid-tier Riverclaws and Galehawks that the teams handled with growing confidence. Kai's group worked seamlessly: Tomas anchoring, Mira providing aerial support, Seline and Lorne controlling the flow, and Kai striking from the shadows with precise Devouring Threads to weaken key targets.

Then the final wave erupted.

The ground split open with a violent tremor. A dozen heavily corrupted beasts poured into the arena—twisted Shadowpanthers, violet-veined Riverclaws, and aberrant Galehawks larger and more coordinated than any previous encounter. At their center lumbered a massive corrupted Behemoth, a rare high-mid-tier spirit beast whose stone-like hide pulsed with thick violet corruption. Its roar shook the barriers.

Proctor Eldrin's face darkened. "This is not part of the trial! All teams retreat—"

But the beasts ignored the proctors' commands and charged with deliberate malice, the Behemoth heading straight toward the center where Kai's team stood.

Chaos exploded across the arena. Spectators gasped as barriers strained under the sudden surge of corrupted energy. Instructors moved to intervene, but the beasts moved too fast, too intelligently.

One corrupted Galehawk broke through the defensive line and dove directly at a weaker team. Lirael Kane moved before anyone could react.

She stepped off the VIP platform, frost blooming beneath her feet as she descended in a graceful arc. Dual affinities flared—crisp Frost forming razor-sharp ice lances while Void-Light shimmered around them, creating voids that swallowed incoming attacks. Her strikes were precise and merciless, freezing one hawk mid-air and shattering it with a follow-up void burst.

Kai saw the opening. The massive Behemoth was targeting Mira, who was pinned down by two panthers. He flickered through Silent Eclipse, reappearing above the beast and unleashing a storm of Devouring Threads. The shadow wrapped the violet veins across its hide, drinking deeply.

The Behemoth roared in fury, swinging a massive arm that Kai barely evaded. Frost and shadow met as Lirael joined the fray from the opposite side, her ice lances piercing the same corrupted veins Kai was draining.

Their powers touched for the first time.

Shadow and Frost-Void Light resonated unexpectedly. The devouring darkness complemented the void-light's consuming nature, while frost provided control and structure. A brief synergy flared—shadow tendrils freezing into dark ice crystals that shattered with explosive force, tearing through the Behemoth's defenses far more effectively than either could alone.

Lirael's icy eyes widened slightly as she landed near Kai, her silver hair whipping in the wind of battle. "Your shadow… it doesn't just hide. It consumes. Interesting."

Kai drove another blade of condensed shadow into a major vein while replying calmly, "And your frost gives it form. We work well together."

The Behemoth staggered under their combined assault. Mira recovered and added gale blades to the mix, while the rest of Kai's team pressed the advantage. With one final coordinated strike—Kai's Devouring Thread draining the core corruption while Lirael's Void-Light frost shattered the remaining hide—the massive beast collapsed, dissolving into purified essence.

The arena fell into stunned silence for a heartbeat before erupting in thunderous applause and shouts.

Proctor Eldrin raised his hands for order, but his eyes were fixed on both Kai and Lirael. "Remarkable synergy. Both of you have earned exceptional merit today."

Lirael straightened, brushing frost from her sleeve. She turned her cold gaze fully on Kai for the first time. Her voice was crisp, almost indifferent, yet carried a hint of genuine curiosity. "You didn't ask for credit. Most would have tried to claim the kill as their own. Who are you?"

"Kai," he answered simply, meeting her eyes without challenge or flattery. "From Willowreach. I fight to survive… and to protect those who stand with me. Nothing more."

Lirael studied him for a long moment, her frost-blue eyes narrowing. Most people approached her with ambition or fear, seeking favor from the Kane name. This boy asked for nothing. He had simply fought beside her, his shadow complementing her power without demanding recognition.

A tiny crack appeared in her icy exterior—barely noticeable, but there. "Kai of Willowreach," she said, the words almost testing the name. "You are… not like the others here. That shadow of yours feels familiar, yet wrong. Dangerous."

She turned to leave, but paused. "If the corrupted beasts return during the exhibition matches, don't hesitate to call for me. I dislike unfinished business."

With that, she ascended back to the VIP section, her silver hair catching the light like frozen starlight. But her gaze lingered on Kai a moment longer than necessary.

Mira landed beside him, breathing hard but smiling faintly. "She noticed you. That's rare. Lirael Kane doesn't warm to anyone easily… but you didn't push. That might be why she did."

Kai watched Lirael's retreating figure. The resonance between their powers still echoed faintly in his veins—shadow and void-light creating something greater together. "She's strong. Strong enough to keep up. And she has her own secrets."

From the upper stands, Zen observed the interaction with quiet satisfaction. The girl's dual affinity carried its own hidden lineage, much like Kai's. Their meeting was no coincidence—the upper realm's influence was drawing similar powers together.

As the trial moved into the final exhibition matches, another faint rift tremor rippled through the arena, too subtle for most to notice but clear to Kai's Rift Echo Sense.

The scout's masters were watching.

And the shadows, along with the frost and void-light, were beginning to answer.
