With my birthday wish still floating in the air and my belly full of joy, I looked at Yui... then at the plush bunny sitting proudly beside her plate.
I reached for Shiba-inu, lifted him into the air like a hero, and grinned big.
"Yui... let's play with all of us!"
Her eyes lit up like sparkles.
"YES! Bunny and Shiba-inu adventure time!"
We both hopped off our chairs and plopped down onto the soft carpet, plushies in hand.
I held Shiba-inu out in front of me like he was ready for a mission.
"Shiba-inu, ready?" I asked.
I made his little head bounce once.
"We're going on a mission... to find Cupcake Mountain!"
Yui gasped dramatically and lifted Bunny.
"Bunny says it's hidden in the Balloon Forest!"
She leaned close and whispered, "But... there's a sleepy cat dragon guarding it!"
We both peeked under the table — and there she was.
Tama-chan.
Curled up in a sunbeam like a tiny dragon queen, her tail flicking slowly.
I tiptoed across the carpet, holding Shiba-inu out front like a brave scout.
Yui giggled as Bunny hopped behind.
I whispered, "Shiba-inu! Be brave. We must sneak past the cat dragon!"
Yui nodded. "Bunny has a strawberry shield!"
We barely made it past Tama when—
fwump!
She rolled over and flicked her tail.
"THE DRAGON WOKE UP!!" I cried.
We both shrieked in pretend panic and fell backward into a pile of giggles.
Our plushies flopped beside us like tired adventurers.
Yui wiped a tear from her cheek, still laughing.
"We almost didn't make it past!"
I sat up fast, my eyes wide.
"We need... dragon snack!"
Yui gasped like it was the most amazing idea in the world.
"Yes! All heroes eat together after sneaky missions!"
We scrambled back to the kitchen table, still half in character.
Then I shouted in my best adventurer voice,
"Excuse me! We need dragon snacks, please!"
Mama laughed from the kitchen.
"Coming right up, brave adventurers!"
She brought over two little mochi — one chocolate, one strawberry — and placed them on our special mission plates.
Yui and I sat side by side, still holding Shiba and Bunny.
We raised our forks together and shouted:
"ITADAKIMASU — HERO STYLE!!"
I took a bite, my eyes going big.
"This gives us... dragon power."
Yui nodded seriously.
"Now we can fly."
Tama-chan watched us from her cushion, her eyes half-lidded and curious.
She let out a single meow, and we giggled.
"Okay, Cat Dragon," I said gently. "We didn't forget your snack too."
I ran over to Papa and tugged his sleeve.
"Papa, can we give Tama-chan her treats?"
He smiled and handed me the pack.
Yui and I opened it together, sitting back down on the floor.
"Here you go, Cat Dragon," Yui said, holding out her hand.
Tama walked over slowly, like a royal creature.
She ate from both our palms, soft and gentle.
And when the last treat was gone...
She licked our fingers with her tiny tongue.
We squealed and laughed.
"It tickles!!"
Tama curled up between us, purring once.
Bunny and Shiba-inu sat nearby like proud adventurers.
And just like that — our quest was complete.
Cupcake Mountain discovered.
Dragon fed.
Hearts full.
Still buzzing with dragon power from the mochi, I turned to Yui, my eyes sparkling.
I lifted Shiba-inu high above my head like he was about to give a big speech.
Yui did the same with Bunny, her face super serious.
We nodded together. Something important was about to begin.
In my tiniest, most serious voice, I said,
"Shiba-inu wants to talk about the cupcake journey."
Yui nodded.
"Bunny too. It was... dangerous."
Then I made Shiba-inu bounce and said in his voice:
"We snuck past the Cat Dragon... using strawberry shields... and THEN—"
I gasped, wide-eyed.
"The cupcakes appeared! Glowing like treasure!!"
Yui made Bunny hop in excitement.
"But we almost dropped one into the lava rug!"
"NOOOOOOO!" I shouted.
Then whispered, "But Bunny saved it... with a frosting beam."
We both collapsed into laughter, our plushies flopping out between us like sleepy adventurers.
My fingers were still a little sticky from mochi.
But my heart? Still full of sparkles.
I leaned Shiba-inu gently against Bunny and whispered in his voice:
"We did it, Bunny. We're... cupcake heroes."
Yui made Bunny nod and raise a tiny paw.
"High-five," she said.
I lifted Shiba's paw and tapped hers.
Tap!
Two heroes.
Two plushies.
One legendary snack quest — complete.
And somewhere nearby...
Cat Dragon Tama let out a single meow.
Maybe that was her way of saying:
"Good job."
Still glowing from your plushie quest — cheeks smudged with frosting, giggles still bubbling in your chest — you turn to Yui, a sparkle in your eye.
"Let's take a photo..." you say, holding Shiba-inu gently.
"With Shiba-inu and Bunny."
Yui gasps like you just gave her the best idea in the whole universe.
"YES! Cupcake heroes forever!"
You both jump up and run over to her mama, each grabbing one of her hands.
"Can you take a picture, please?" you ask softly.
Yui nods eagerly.
"Of us... and our sidekicks!"
Her mama smiles, kneeling down with the camera.
"Of course, sweethearts."
You and Yui hurry to the fluffy rug in front of the balloon arch — still colorful from the party.
You sit close.
You hold Shiba-inu up proudly, his stitched smile shining.
Yui hugs Bunny to her cheek, eyes bright.
You look at each other once.
Then, in perfect unison, shout:
"CUPCAKE HEROES!!"
Click!
The shutter catches the moment —
Sticky fingers.
Crumpled party hats.
Two smiling faces.
Two loyal plushies.
And one perfect memory.
Forever saved.
Forever soft.
Forever yours.
Before we even noticed...
The sun that had been shining bright above us all day started to grow sleepy.
Its light turned softer, like golden blankets being pulled over the sky.
The shadows stretched long across the floor, and everything began to feel quieter... slower... like even the world was yawning.
Yui's mama checked the clock on the wall, then called gently from the hallway:
"Yui... it's time to go, sweetheart. Papa will be home soon."
Yui looked up and nodded.
But before she left —
She turned to me with both hands behind her back, holding something carefully.
"It's your birthday present," she said with a shy smile.
"Open it, Hideki."
I blinked, then reached out to take the little box wrapped in pink paper.
My fingers were careful — almost nervous — as I untied the ribbon and peeled it open.
Inside...
A small bracelet, made of colored letter beads.
The letters spelled:
Yui & Hideki
I stared at it, my heart quietly thumping.
Then Yui lifted her wrist.
She was wearing the same bracelet.
I hadn't noticed it before — but it was exactly like the one she gave me.
My eyes went wide, and I looked down quickly, too shy to meet her gaze.
She giggled softly.
Then, with both hands, she gently took the bracelet from the box and slipped it around my wrist.
"There," she said. "Now we match."
We both looked at our wrists — the beads warm from our hands, the letters dancing slightly in the light.
Then Yui held out her pinky finger.
Her voice was soft, but certain:
"Hideki and Yui will always be friends."
I nodded hard.
Then wrapped my pinky around hers.
"Forever." I whispered.
Our fingers stayed like that for a long second — small, but full of promise.
Then it was time.
Yui picked up Bunny, waved her free hand, and began to walk toward the door with her mama.
"Byeeee Hidekiii~!" she called, her voice light like the evening wind.
I waved back, Shiba-inu held up beside me, his little paw raised too.
"Byeeee Yuiii!"
She smiled wide, then made Bunny wave back at us.
And just like that...
The day ended.
With a wish in our hearts...
A bracelet on my wrist...
And a promise tied in pinky fingers.
A memory that would never fade.
A friendship that would always shine.
Forever.
