Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: What Remains

The silence that followed felt different.

Not suffocating.

Not forced.

But heavy in a way Kai couldn't escape.

His breathing slowly steadied, though his chest still rose unevenly from the pressure that had only just disappeared. The absence of it should have felt like relief.

It didn't.

It felt worse.

Because now there was nothing to blame.

Kai knew exactly what he had said.

And why.

His fingers curled slightly against Leon's shoulder, his body still tense—but the fight wasn't there anymore. Not in the same way. Something in him had cracked under the weight of that moment, and no matter how much he tried to rebuild it, it didn't fit the same.

"I…"

His voice faltered.

Kai clenched his jaw, anger flaring — but it had nowhere to go. Not at Leon. Not at Jake. Not even at himself in any way that fixed it.

He hated it.

Hated that word.

Hated how easily it had come out when he couldn't hold it back.

Hated that it meant something.

His body shifted slightly—not to escape this time, not to fight—but closer. Almost unconsciously.

And then—

Kai turned his head and pressed his face into the side of Leon's neck.

The movement was small.

Quiet.

But deliberate.

Jake blinked again, his expression shifting into something far less teasing and far more stunned. "…Okay," he said under his breath, quieter this time. "That's new"

Richard remained silent, though his gaze lingered just a moment longer than before.

Leon didn't react immediately.

He didn't move. Didn't comment. Didn't tighten his hold or shift away.

He simply let it happen.

Kai's grip adjusted slightly, not tightening, not clinging — just… there. His body, which had been so tense moments ago, now felt heavy. Not weak. Not defeated.

Just… done.

"I hate this," Kai muttered, his voice muffled slightly against Leon.

Leon's response came calm as ever. "I know."

There was no mockery in it. No dismissal. Just certainty.

Kai exhaled slowly, his breath warm against the cold edge of Leon's aura. The contrast was strange—familiar in a way he didn't want to acknowledge.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then, quieter—

"…Dad."

The word came out again.

This time—

Not forced.

Not dragged out of him by pressure or instinct alone.

Just… said.

And that made it worse.

Kai's eyes shut tightly, frustration twisting in his chest as soon as it left his lips. He didn't move away, though. Didn't try to take it back.

Because he couldn't.

Leon's hand shifted slightly against his side again, steady and grounding, his hold unchanged—but something in the room settled with that single word.

Not victory.

Not control.

Something quieter.

Something final, in its own way.

Jake let out a slow breath, shaking his head slightly. "Yeah… okay," he muttered. "I definitely missed a lot while he was here."

Kai ignored him completely.

He didn't lift his head. Didn't move.

Because right now—

He didn't have the strength to fight it anymore.

And that might have been the part he hated most.
